Chapter 49 - Chapter 49: Mission

On a pitch-black night, Kaede, who had grown into a young girl, and a boy stood in front of a young man.

At this moment, the young man was holding a document in his hand, flipping it back and forth; it was unknown whether he could even see it clearly in this pitch-black night.

"Kaede from the Third Squad, and Miyake Ren from the Sixth Squad, right?" the young man asked directly without even looking up.

"Yes."

"Good. Your mission is to assassinate this civil official." As he spoke, the young man tossed two portraits to Kaede and Miyake Ren.

"The time limit is two days, and only one person can survive this mission," the young man said.

"Huh?" Kaede didn't even blink, but Miyake Ren's face turned ugly. He knew that Kaede beside him was the strongest in the Third Squad, undeniably the strongest. Was this meant to kill him?

"Whoever brings back the civil official's head first wins. The meeting point is still here."

"Hmm?" Miyake Ren was taken aback. Is that so? Then he should still have a chance to survive!

"Now, the mission begins." As soon as the young man finished speaking, Miyake Ren ran out, but his movement didn't make a single sound. At this moment, Miyake Ren gritted his teeth. He had to survive; he had to kill that civil official before Kaede, for the sake of his own life!

Kaede turned around, looked at Miyake Ren over there, and tilted her head. What was his name again? She hadn't heard it clearly, but it didn't matter.

Kaede also moved, her figure following like a ghost.

Watching all of this, the young man's eyes revealed vigilance. He had heard of Kaede's reputation; she had killed a Soldier right from the start, and every Soldier who was dissatisfied with her and caused trouble for her because of that incident had met only one end: death.

Seeing it now, he realized it was true. The young man began to feel wary. That figure, which moved without making a sound or stirring even a breeze, was a lethal assassin to anyone.

At this moment, the young man couldn't help but curse under his breath. It was all that pervert's fault. If it weren't for that pervert's twisted personality, Kaede's actions back there would have been enough to get her killed several times over. But that pervert seemed to quite like Kaede's behavior. They were all perverts! Unreasonable!

At this moment, the young man even wished that Miyake Ren could kill the civil official first, so there would be one less person who could climb above him in the future. However, the young man shook his head; how could that be possible?

All three knew that although the mission was given two days, in fact, it could be completed on the first day, that is, this very night.

Two days—that was just a lie.

The Imperial Assassination Unit was just that overbearing. They never collected any information; they only gave you the information of the person you needed to kill and then sent you to do it. As long as you could kill the mission target, that was all that mattered. As for your own life, that was not within their scope of consideration.

If you could survive, that was better; you could continue working. If you couldn't, it didn't matter.

It was more like those two days were to force you to run away. Kaede still remembered how someone who had run away before was caught and hacked to pieces. Moreover, some things in this world were very strange; they could actually keep a person alive while being hacked to pieces...

At that time, Kaede still remembered that person's screams very clearly, very clearly. It was heart-wrenching, and just hearing those screams made one's hair stand on end.

Well, of course, there were also those who liked to gather information first and then assassinate. However, the one assigning the missions seemed to dislike that. So, the next mission assigned, heh, would be to send you to your death.

And if you found out this was a suicide mission, wouldn't you run? Heh, and then you'd be caught again... The result would still be the same.

Bringing the gaze back, Miyake Ren had already arrived at the mission location.

At this moment, he carefully looked at the surrounding environment, and a look of joy appeared on his face—not because it was suitable for assassination, but because he didn't see Kaede's figure.

Is this looking down on me? Miyake Ren smiled. Then I'll let you see the price of looking down on me.

Even if you are the best in the Third Squad, you will fall into my hands. Thinking this, the smile on Miyake Ren's face grew wider. When the time comes, I'll definitely brag about it in the Sixth Squad!

Well, if Miyake Ren knew that Kaede hadn't even heard his name clearly, what would he feel? He would probably laugh even harder, right? The kind of laughter born of extreme rage.

It must be said that Miyake Ren's assassination skills were not bad; he had arrived at the mission target's room without alerting anyone.

Finally, while the assassination target was fast asleep, he covered his mouth and slashed his head off in one go.

During this process, Miyake Ren looked at the mission target's wide-open eyes, and then his whole body trembled, as if he had seen Kaede's stunned face.

Haha, I won! I won against Kaede, the best in the Third Squad!

Miyake Ren finally managed to suppress the excitement in his heart, let out a breath, and returned along the original route. At the final step, Miyake Ren climbed over the wall, his whole body trembling. Almost there! Almost there!

"Huh?" Miyake Ren was a bit confused. Why couldn't he control his own body? Why wasn't his body moving? Why couldn't he feel his body?

"Huh?" Miyake Ren saw his own body. Why could he see it? Why was his body over there, and there was someone next to it...

"Kaede..."

"Thump!"

Kaede looked at the corpse lying on the ground, and Miyake Ren's head that had rolled off to who knows where. After taking the package from Miyake Ren's hand, her figure flickered again, incredibly fast.

As for the sound Miyake Ren made when he fell to the ground, not to mention that it wouldn't alert anyone, even if it did, what did that have to do with Kaede? As long as her mission was completed, that was enough.

What? You say Miyake Ren completed it? Heh, that's why they only ever look at the results here.

Soon, Kaede came before the young man and tossed the package to him.

"Hmm." The young man nodded and sighed inwardly. As expected. Then he looked into the distance and frowned. "Did he run away?"

"No, he's dead," Kaede said, walking in one direction.

"Dead?" The young man was stunned, then suddenly realized what had happened. Thinking of Kaede's figure trailing half a step behind, his heart couldn't help but turn cold. This person had definitely planned to do this from the very beginning!

"Must never provoke her!" At this moment, a thought couldn't help but appear in the young man's heart, even though he was stronger than Kaede now!

Kaede walked on the road, looking at the moonlight in the sky. All three of them had survived well, and Kaede believed that such a mission would definitely not be difficult for Akame and Kurome.

"Teigu..." Kaede murmured, recalling those weapons with strange functions.
