Chapter 2 - Grocery Store

Closing his eyes for a moment, he concentrated on his hearing.

The noise of a fierce battle outside was beneficial for him. Each noise echoes in a certain way off a wall or a surface, basically giving Kurt X-ray vision. Kurt used that to study the whole place from within the room, and mark a way out. Now, he only had to make sure that there are no guards in his way.

The room is situated at the very end of a long hallway, of which the hallway contains several other rooms. He was also able to discern that he was on the second floor, with the first floor having no walls and an empty space in the middle. This was probably a grocery store or something similar. It was also a warehouse of the rival family.

Fortunately, there was no one on the second floor. Walking through the dimly lit hallway, he looked left and right through the doors. Not all were open, of course.

There was a meeting room with a round table in the middle, surrounded by multiple chairs. There was a room with numerous crates of ammunition and some explosives. The last of the open rooms contained a few stashes of cash.

At the end of the hallway, there were the stairs, and there was a guard there. The guard was also slowly turning around, to see Kurt.

Kurt's heart skipped a beat, then he quickly hid inside the storage room. He prayed that the man had not seen him, but it was to no avail. What he had dreaded the last second happened.

A voice echoed through the hallway, making Kurt curse under his breath.

"I saw you, bastard!"

Rushing footsteps were getting closer and closer. It was time to fight.

Before the opponent stepped inside the room Kurt was in, the door suddenly swung shut. It hit the pursuer in the face, disorienting him. Kurt used that to rush him. He quickly lunged at the man and grabbed him in a chokehold, pushing him up against the wall. He squeezed hard, and punched him with the other hand.

He resisted, punching Kurt back. The chokehold was turning into a setback, so he let go and stepped back. Then, his leg shot forward, aiming to kick the man in his chest. Before it hit, however, the man blocked it, and caught his leg.

His opponent had no idea who he was dealing with...

Kurt was blessed with an unusually powerful perception ability. It allows him to collect data from his surroundings and quickly process them into information.

Above all that, he was a very talented criminal. That's the explanation behind him being a caporegime in the powerful Santi Family.

Kurt saw through the opponent's movement, so when they attempted to drop him to the floor, he counter-attacked. The leg that was held was used as a support for propelling him upwards. Then, the other leg struck upwards, hitting the opponent's chin with shattering force.

Before he knew it, the opponent was laying on the ground. He was unconscious, and his jaw was obliterated.

After Kurt descended, he found a smaller corridor with a single door at it's end. That door was going to lead him to the main area of the building. That also meant that it was going to lead to the firefight.

Knowing that everyone inside the place was faced outwards, welcoming their uninvited guests, he slowly unlocked the door and peeked outside.

An unbearable smell of burnt gunpowder insulted his senses, along with dust and debris from the ruined surfaces. Kurt tensed, seeing shattered windows and a rain of bullets coming from the outside.

Avoiding the blood and the dead body on the floor, Kurt retrieved a revolver and wiped it. He was hidden behind the store's counter, crouching. It was an easy task to stay out of sight, since the store was spacious and multiple stands of goods were making it look like a maze.

Rolling the barrel out, he counted two bullets.

'I guess I have to be efficient.'

Scanning the area, he proceeded forward. The store was already infiltrated by the other visitors, which were all wearing bandanas of a light blue color.

'Why would the Devils attack the Mafia... Such fools!'

The Devils are a street gang of a fearsome reputation in Las Vegas.

But Kurt was not clueless, either. He was just unsure which of his conclusions were correct. It was between two things.

The Lupo Family stealing from them was one way to put it. However, it can not be that simple. Street gangs can form an alliance with the mafia to support them. Provided that the mafia can also benefit from the gang. The mafia always has the upper hand, which means that gangs can't possibly overpower a mafia.

In other words, the first option had a very low chance of being true.

However, the second possibility was more logical.

'Enzo sent someone?'

Enzo is a soldier of The Santi Family, the one that was in the limousine with the underboss. He is also a good friend of Kurt.

Kurt spared a few moments to visualize his surrounding, then selected a path. A while later, he was sneaking past two shooters.

Just when he was about to jump out of an open window on the side, he accidentally kicked an empty glass bottle.

One of them turned his head slightly, but then got back to shooting right away. The sound of gunshots had covered for him. He barely avoided pulling off the trigger.

Kurt was just about to shoot him...

Jumping out the window, he swiftly dropped on both legs and used his hand for support. Then he dashed away from the store.

Before he could flee the scene, however, a cop shouted at him from the back of the store.

"Hey, stop right there!"

Kurt froze in place, then turned around.

"Drop your weapon, now!"

At this point, time seemed to slow down a bit, and Kurt's mind quickly calculated his chances. It was as if he can see the future.

However, something unexpected happened. What he saw was the officer being flung away, as if being hit by something gigantic. Kurt instinctively jumped back, dodging whatever that's about to come. A split second later, the sound of an engine roared in the background, and a huge wagon flew by. It struck him with a sickening force, and his body was thrown aside like it weighed nothing.

The wagon rotated and headed back to where the cop was lying. It made a screeching halt near Kurt, then the tinted windows rolled down. A young man with long hair and a handsome face aimed the revolver at Kurt's abdomen...

No... was it Kurt?

The bullet was released, but Kurt was unharmed. When he turned around, he saw the cop drowning in a pool of his own blood. The cop was disfigured, and his head had a clean hole through it.

'That was impressive!'

The young man's gaze shifted towards Kurt, lingering for a moment, then he spoke.

"Capo Kurt, you mind if I escort you personally?"

Kurt gathered all his might to put on a nonchalant face, then responded.

"I was waiting for you."
