Chapter 16 - Chapter 16: Fragmented Breathing

Darkness did not come back.

It stayed at the edges of Lin Tians awareness. It did not control him anymore.

His eyes were still closed.

He kept breathing.

In.

Out.

His breathing was not steady.

Not forced.

Not smooth.

It was still his.

The cave was very quiet.

No wind blew.

Nothing moved.

There was a faint sound from the formation steady and far away.

Su Yan did not move.

She looked at Lin Tian.

Watching him.

Measuring him.

Waiting.

Lin Tian did nothing.

That was different now.

Before every moment had a purpose.

Every breath had a goal.

Every move had a result.

Now there was none.

In.

Out.

The first change was small.

So small it was almost not there.

The resistance in his chest got a bit less.

Not gone.

Not broken.

Just a bit less.

Like something that had been pressing down got a bit lighter.

Lin Tian did not react.

He did not try to make it happen again.

The Chaos Qi flickered.

It was faint.

Broken.

Scattered.

It moved without direction.

Before it surged.

Now it drifted.

Lin Tian watched.

Not with his eyes.

Not with force.

Just awareness.

A small piece of Qi moved along a damaged path.

Slow.

Unstable.

It shook as it passed.

Pain followed.

Dull.

Deep.

Not sharp like before.

Not explosive.

The pain stayed.

Lin Tians breathing almost stopped.

Almost.

He noticed it.

That was all.

He kept breathing.

In.

Out.

The Qi piece did not go back this time.

It stayed where the pain was.

Like it was unsure.

Like it was waiting.

Lin Tian did not guide it.

He did not pull.

He did not push.

Time passed.

Maybe it did not.

There was no way to tell.

Another piece stirred.

Then another.

Not together.

Not in line.

Each moved on its own.

Like pieces that had forgotten they belonged together.

The pain did not go away.

It did not get worse either.

Su Yan looked a bit sharper.

That was the sign.

Lin Tians breathing changed.

Not because he tried.

Not because he wanted to.

It adjusted.

A bit deeper.

A bit slower.

In.

Out.

For a moment—

One piece of Chaos Qi followed his breath.

Just one.

It moved as he inhaled.

Paused.

Then settled as he exhaled.

It was unstable.

It wavered.

It almost broke apart.

Lin Tian did nothing.

The piece completed its path.

A short one.

Incomplete.

Uninterrupted.

The pain did not spike.

The silence got deeper.

Su Yan spoke.

"Again."

Her voice was calm.

Not loud.

Not soft.

It did not have any instruction beyond the word.

Lin Tian did not respond.

Something inside him did.

In.

Out.

This time two pieces moved.

Not together.

Not perfectly.

They followed the same rhythm.

The paths resisted.

Damaged.

Strained.

Not ready.

Pain surfaced.

Low.

Constant.

Lin Tians brow tightened a bit.

Only a bit.

The pieces shook.

One faltered.

Almost collapsed.

Lin Tians breath stayed steady.

The piece stabilized.

Barely.

Su Yan watched.

Unblinking.

"Do not interfere " she said.

Lin Tian had not moved.

The instinct had been there.

To correct.

To control.

To force.

He let it pass.

He kept breathing.

In.

Out.

The Chaos Qi did not surge.

It did not obey.

It simply followed.

As much as it could.

A third piece stirred.

Slower than the others.

Heavier.

It dragged through a path.

One that felt… wrong.

Pain followed away.

Sharper this time.

Lin Tians breath hitched—

Then steadied.

The piece stopped.

Not by force.

Not by collapse.

It simply could not move further.

It stayed there.

Blocking.

Pressing.

The discomfort spread.

Lin Tian observed it.

For the time—

He noticed something clearly.

The pain was not the enemy.

The resistance was.

His breathing adjusted again.

Softer.

Less demand.

Less reach.

In.

Out.

The blocked piece shifted.

Just a bit.

Enough.

It moved forward.

A fraction.

The pressure eased.

Su Yans eyes narrowed.

Not in doubt.

In recognition.

Lin Tian continued.

Time lost meaning.

Pieces moved.

Stopped.

Shifted.

Settled.

Not progress.

Not failure.

Just change.

Then—

It happened.

One full breath.

In.

Out.

Three pieces aligned.

Not perfectly.

Not completely.

Together.

They moved along paths.

Slow.

Unstable.

Uninterrupted.

The cycle completed.

No surge.

No pain spike.

Just… completion.

Lin Tians chest rose.

Then fell.

Something inside him settled.

Not the Chaos Qi.

Not his body.

Something deeper.

Stillness.

Su Yan spoke again.

"You felt it."

It was not a question.

Lin Tians eyes were still closed.

His voice came.

Quiet.

Rough.

Steady.

"Yes."

A pause.

Su Yan turned a bit.

Her gaze shifted toward the cave entrance.

Just for a moment.

Then back, to him.

"Remember it " she said.

No explanation followed.

Lin Tian did not ask.

He breathed.

In.

Out.

This time—

He knew the difference.
