The forest was not quiet.
It was just pretending to be.
Lin Tian walked deeper into the forest.
He took his time stepping slowly and carefully.
The light from above was getting thinner. The branches were getting tangled.
The shadows were layered on top of each other making it hard to see.
The air was getting heavier. It was not dense. It was active like it was alive.
The Wild Qi was moving without any pattern or rhythm. It was brushing against Lin Tian all the time.
It was testing him interfering with him and inviting him to react.
The Chaos Qi inside Lin Tian was responding,. It was not resisting or yielding.
It was adjusting, trying to balance itself.
Lin Tian was keeping it balanced making sure it was not too compressed or too flowing.
He was keeping it controlled, but not perfect. A little imperfect.
And it was working it was better than when he was inside the Azure Sky Sect.
There was a sound behind him and Lin Tian stopped.
He did not turn around he just listened.
Then he heard a step, light and careful like someone was trying not to be heard.
It was not a beast it was a person.
Another step, this time and Lin Tian turned slightly.
Gu Chen was standing between the trees looking unhurried and unhidden.
"You did not join a group " Gu Chen said, his voice quiet but clear.
Lin Tian faced forward again. Said, "No need."
Gu Chen stepped closer. Said, "Most people would disagree they prefer survival."
Lin Tian answered, "So do I."
Gu Chens gaze sharpened slightly and he said, ". Alone?"
Lin Tian did not respond immediately he just stepped forward.
The Chaos Qi shifted with him, smooth and adaptive.
"Alone is simpler " Lin Tian said, "there are variables fewer mistakes and fewer risks from others."
Gu Chen followed him not beside him not behind him. Offset, watching him.
"You are not wrong " Gu Chen said, ". You are not completely right either."
There was silence for a moment. Then a sudden ripple ahead sharp and violent.
The forest reacted leaves trembled, branches. Qi surged, uncontrolled.
Lin Tian stopped instantly his Chaos Qi tightening, enough.
Gu Chens expression changed, focused. He said, "That is not a beast."
There was another surge, this time and the air twisted, like something was forcing it aside.
Then there was movement, unstable and a figure burst through the trees.
It was a disciple breathing hard clothes torn and Qi disordered.
He did not stop when he saw Lin Tian and Gu Chen he just shouted, "Move!"
But it was too late something was following him not fast, but relentless.
It emerged slowly from the shadow, tall and twisted not fully solid.
Its form shifted like smoke forced into shape, Qi, but not natural, distorted and corrupted.
Lin Tians eyes narrowed this was not a beast, not a disciple, something else.
The fleeing disciple stumbled and fell and the thing did not rush did not strike wildly.
It approached steadily certainly like it had all the time it needed.
Gu Chen stepped forward slightly and said, "What is that?"
Lin Tian did not answer, because he did not know. He understood one thing. It was dangerous.
The fallen disciple tried to rise. He was too slow and the distorted figure reached him.
Its form shifted, condensed and then struck, no limb, no clear motion, just impact.
The disciples body jerked, Qi. There was silence.
The forest stilled, even the wind stopped and Gu Chens expression hardened.
"That is not part of the trial " he said.
Lin Tian stepped forward one step and the Chaos Qi responded instantly balanced and adaptive.
The distorted thing turned slowly toward him it had no eyes but it saw it had no face. It recognized a presence, a target.
It shifted again its form tightening, becoming denser, real and more dangerous.
Lin Tian exhaled slowly this was not like before not like the beast, not something not something natural.
He stepped forward again. Gu Chen spoke, "Do not rush it."
Lin Tian did not stop, "I will not."
But he did not slow either the thing moved, not fast, but direct, toward him.
Lin Tian adjusted mid-step flow shifted, compression formed and then released
The thing reacted its form flickered and then surged forward faster unstable.
Lin Tian moved, side, not back. The Chaos Qi followed instantly no delay.
He struck, a short burst of compression, precise and the impact landed, but felt wrong not solid not empty something between.
The thing distorted, its form. Then reformed instantly no damage, no hesitation.
It struck, faster than before. Lin Tian barely avoided, the air where he stood twisted violently.
He felt it that was not physical that was Qi, corrupted, unstable and dangerous.
Gu Chen moved in from the side his strike was clean, structured and precise Sect method.
The impact hit, solid. The thing recoiled, more than before its form destabilized, for a moment.
Then it adapted, shifted, its structure changed, chaotic more focused.
It turned, not to Lin Tian. To Gu Chen.
Lin Tians eyes sharpened it was learning, too fast.
Gu Chen stepped back controlled. Aware now "This thing—"
He did not finish, because it moved again faster more direct targeting him.
Lin Tian stepped in intercepted, not with force. With timing.
His Chaos Qi. Then split, part compressed, part flowing outward.
The impact disrupted the things movement not stopping it but altering it enough.
Gu Chen adjusted instantly struck again clean, precise and this time the things form broke more.
Fragments of Qi scattered, but they did not fade they pulled back together reforming.
Still unstable,. Persistent.
Lin Tian exhaled slowly "It does not collapse " he said.
Gu Chen nodded, "Then we break it faster than it reforms."
Simple, direct, but not easy.
The thing surged again more aggressive now less controlled.
Lin Tian moved, faster his rhythm changed constantly no pattern, no repetition.
The Chaos Qi followed, adaptive unpredictable.
He struck, not to destroy, but to disrupt, to interfere.
Every impact broke the things structure briefly.
Gu Chen followed each opening, precise, focused and stable.
Opposites, working together without planning without words.
The thing destabilized further its form flickered now less defined, less controlled.
It surged one time desperate, unstable.
Lin Tian stepped forward not back this time he compressed fully for a moment.
A single point, a burst perfect timing, impact.
The distortion shattered, completely fragments scattered and then nothing.
No reforming, no return, silence.
The forest exhaled slowly the pressure. Gu Chen lowered his hand breathing steady but deeper than before.
"That was not normal " he said.
Lin Tian did not respond immediately he felt the Chaos Qi within him it had reacted differently not resisting, not struggling, almost resonating.
He looked at where the thing had vanished "This place..." he said quietly "...is not stable."
Gu Chen glanced around the forest seemed the same. It was not not anymore.
"Then the trial is not either " Gu Chen replied.
Lin Tian nodded once because that was obvious now this was not a test of strength or skill something else was here something unknown something dangerous.
He turned, looking deeper, into the forest, where the Qi grew denser, chaotic more familiar.
His Chaos Qi stirred, responsive, drawn.
Gu Chen watched him "You are going further."
Not a question.
Lin Tian stepped forward "Yes."
Gu Chen did not stop him did not follow either.
I just watched.
For a moment I just stood there.
Then he did something.
He moved.
This thing they called a trial was already different.
Lin Tian was going somewhere.
Lin Tian was moving toward the center of the trial.
