Chapter 4 - The Man Who Watches

The city never slept.

But Lina wished it would.

Because every shadow now felt alive.

Every passing stranger looked like a witness.

And every second… felt like borrowed time.

Lina sat on the floor of her apartment, her back against the wall, staring at nothing.

Two people.

Two lives.

Gone.

Because of her.

Her fingers trembled as she looked at her hands.

"They're just hands…" she whispered.

But they didn't feel like hers anymore.

They felt dangerous.

Her phone buzzed again.

Lina didn't even reach for it this time.

"I'm not playing your game," she said quietly.

Silence.

Then another vibration.

And another.

Finally, she grabbed the phone and opened the message.

Unknown number.

Of course.

"You're improving."

Lina's jaw tightened.

"I'm not doing this for you."

Another message appeared instantly.

"You're doing it because you want to understand."

Her stomach twisted.

Because part of that was true.

"Curiosity is the beginning of power."

"Stop messaging me," Lina muttered.

But the typing indicator appeared again.

"Too late."

Her phone suddenly went dark.

Completely dark.

The screen flickered once.

Then—

A live video appeared.

Lina froze.

The camera showed a street.

Rain falling.

Dim lights.

And a familiar figure standing under a streetlamp.

Noah Hale.

Her heart skipped.

"What…?"

The camera slowly zoomed closer.

Noah stood with his hands in his coat pockets, looking completely calm.

Completely still.

Then—

He lifted his head.

And looked directly into the camera.

Lina's blood turned cold.

"No…"

Her phone vibrated again.

"He's smarter than you think."

The video ended.

The screen returned to black.

"Who are you?!" Lina shouted into the empty room.

But the only answer was silence.

Across the city—

Noah Hale lowered his gaze slowly.

Something wasn't normal.

He had seen criminals before.

Liars.

Killers.

People who tried to hide their guilt.

But this—

This was different.

He pulled a small notebook from his coat and wrote a single line.

Subject reacts to physical contact.

He paused.

Then added another.

Victims collapse immediately after interaction.

Noah closed the notebook.

Rain fell softly around him.

"Interesting," he murmured.

Because tonight—

He had seen her.

Not clearly.

But enough.

The moment the man collapsed…

He had seen a girl in the crowd.

Standing too still.

Watching too closely.

And when their eyes met—

She ran.

"Fear," Noah said quietly.

"But not guilt."

That was what troubled him the most.

Back in her apartment—

Lina was pacing.

Her thoughts racing wildly.

"He saw me…"

Her chest tightened.

"The police know."

Her mind flashed with images.

Prison.

Interrogations.

Handcuffs.

"No…"

She shook her head violently.

"I'm not going to prison for something I don't understand."

Her phone buzzed again.

Lina closed her eyes.

Slowly.

Then opened the message.

"Relax."

Her breathing became uneven.

"If the detective catches you…"

Another message.

"You'll simply take his life."

The words hit her like ice.

"What?"

Her fingers trembled.

"Imagine it."

Another message.

"The mind of a detective."

"His memories."

"His secrets."

Lina's heart pounded harder.

"Wouldn't that be useful?"

"Stop…" she whispered.

But the idea had already planted itself in her mind.

Across the city—

Noah suddenly stopped walking.

Something felt wrong.

Like someone had just thought about him.

He glanced around slowly.

The street was empty.

Quiet.

Still.

But the feeling remained.

Noah narrowed his eyes slightly.

Then murmured to himself—

"Who are you…?"

Back in the apartment—

Lina stared at the last message on her phone.

Her hands shaking.

Her mind racing.

Because for the first time—

She realized something terrifying.

The voice texting her…

Wasn't just watching.

It was guiding her.

And the next move—

Was hers.
