Chapter 35 - The Second Presence

A new pulse rippled through the white space, stronger this time, echoing in Lina's chest. It wasn't her heartbeat, and yet it matched hers perfectly.

Noah noticed first. "Lina… there's something else. Something behind you."

She froze for a moment, every fragment of borrowed life reacting instinctively. "…I feel it," she whispered. "But it isn't hostile… not yet. Just… waiting."

The shadows deepened along the fractures. Shapes shifted subtly—like figures hidden in fog. A presence that felt conscious, intelligent. Not an echo, not a memory.

Mira stepped closer cautiously. "…What is it?"

"I don't know yet," Lina admitted. Her voice was low, controlled. "…But it knows me. All of me."

The air thickened, and a hum resonated through the void. Lina's hand hovered over a patch of floating memories. They shimmered violently, responding to the unseen presence. Faces of borrowed lives flickered in fear and recognition.

"…It's testing you," Noah said. "Measuring what you can do."

"Yes," Lina agreed softly. "…And it will push me. Just as I've pushed myself before."

The hum intensified. Then—a whisper, not from the space, not from her, but from within her mind: "You've carried too much. And now you must choose."

Her breath caught. Something alive had awakened—not outside, but inside. Every life she had borrowed, every fragment she had carried… was aware. Watching. Waiting.

Lina's hand clenched. "…Then I choose to be stronger. For all of us."

A subtle smile touched her lips. "…But I won't let it control me."
