Chapter 164 - Ch.164 The First Working

They did the first cross-tradition working on the last day of the break, at the St. Philip and Rampart intersection, after three days of mapping and discussion and the kind of preparation that both traditions required for work of this kind.

He had thought carefully about what they were attempting. The working was simple in its stated goal: a healing working for a specific person — a neighbor of the Moreaus, an elderly woman named Miss Celeste who had been ill since October with something that the doctors were treating and that Cece had been monitoring with the practitioner's perception for weeks.

What she had found, monitoring Miss Celeste with the Vodou tradition's tools, was the lwa anchor in clear manifestation: a Loa presence in the family line, three generations back, that had been dormant and that the illness was — in the tradition's understanding — attempting to wake. Not causing the illness. Not preventing recovery. Creating a resonance between the illness and the divine presence that was making the standard treatment less effective because the treatment was addressing only the physical layer.

He had examined Miss Celeste with the Diagnostic Sight. He confirmed: the constitutional variable was present, active, the medical layer interacting with what he was calling the divine-adjacent constitutional factor in ways that were reducing treatment efficacy.

The working they designed, together, was neither purely Hecate-tradition nor purely Vodou. It was a threshold working — the fundamental mechanism they shared — that addressed the divine layer specifically, creating the conditions in which the medical treatment could reach what it needed to reach.

They stood at the intersection at dusk, when the threshold shimmer was deepest. Cece worked from the Vodou side: the invocation of the Ghede Loa who could mediate the lwa anchor and create the passage for recovery. He worked from the Hecate side: the Crossroads Ward drawn not as a barrier but as an amplification — the three-road pattern focused not on exclusion but on channeling, opening the threshold that the medical treatment needed to reach.

It was the first time he had used the Crossroads Ward in a healing context. He had always understood it as a barrier technique. What he found, drawing it with the specific intention of opening rather than blocking, was that the same geometry worked in the other direction — the pattern channeled as naturally as it blocked, the crossroads mathematics working equally well for passage as for prevention.

He thought: of course. Of course the crossroads works both ways. That is what a crossroads is.

The working lasted forty minutes. At the end of it, the intersection's shimmer had a quality he had not felt at the start — the specific quality of a threshold that had been properly used, the warmth of genuine sacred work settling into the ground to join what was already there.

He walked back to the Moreau house with Cece in the December dark and they were both quiet for a while.

She said: 'Miss Celeste is going to be better.'

'Yes,' he said. 'I think so.'

'You're not certain.'

'I'm confident,' he said. 'We addressed the layer that was interfering with the treatment. The treatment itself is good — her doctors are competent. Without the interference, it should work.'

'Should,' she said.

'I have never been able to make stronger promises than should,' he said. 'I have the same limits I have always had — I can do the work and I can be confident in the work and I can still not guarantee the outcome.' He looked at her. 'Is that okay?'

'Yes,' she said. 'That's medicine too. You can do the right thing and still not control the outcome. The tradition is the same.' She paused. 'I just wanted to hear you say it.'

He thought: she was checking. She was checking that the seventeen years of planning had not, in this context, produced the specific arrogance of someone who has been right so often they have stopped accounting for the ways they might be wrong.

He thought: she is right to check. And she is right that I should say it.

He thought: this partnership is going to make me better at the thing I am. Not because she is a correction but because she asks the right questions.
