Chapter 165 - Ch.165 Miss Celeste

He was back in New York when Cece called him with the update.

Miss Celeste's next doctor's appointment — the one in the second week of January that the doctors had been using to assess whether the treatment was working — showed the markers moving in the right direction. Not dramatic recovery. The specific quality of a treatment that had been working on a partial problem and was now working on the whole problem: the change that happens when an obstacle is removed rather than when a cure is applied.

'Her doctor said,' Cece reported, 'and I am quoting directly: I don't know what changed, but something changed. Whatever you've been doing, keep doing it.'

'Whatever you've been doing,' he repeated.

'She knows Mama visits,' Cece said. 'She knows the tradition. She doesn't know what we specifically did, but she trusts the tradition's contribution and she's not asking for a mechanism.' A pause. 'That's the best possible clinical outcome — the working is acknowledged without requiring explanation.'

He sat at his desk in the West Village apartment and thought about this. He thought about the working at the intersection, the two-tradition threshold work, the specific combination of Hecate-pattern and Ghede invocation that had addressed the divine layer. He thought about Dr. Hassan and the case files and the framework they were building.

He thought: Miss Celeste's case is a case file now. Documented, annotated, followed up. The outcome is positive. The mechanism is described in both the divine vocabulary and the medical vocabulary. When the research framework is further developed, this case will be one of the foundation cases — the early evidence that the framework is addressing something real.

He thought: this is what the twenty years looks like at the start. One patient. One working. One conversation between a doctor who trusts the tradition and a practitioner who knows the mechanism.

He wrote in his notebook: Miss Celeste, New Orleans, December-January. The first documented cross-tradition healing working with positive clinical outcome. Constitutional variable identified. Mechanism addressed through cross-tradition threshold working. Treatment efficacy restored. Doctor's observation: 'something changed.'

He wrote: This is the beginning of the case record. There will be more.

He thought about Nadia in the pediatric ward, the seven-year-old with the composed stillness and the divine shimmer he had not been equipped to address, only to flag. He thought: she is the future case. The infrastructure to reach her does not yet exist. In five years, it might.

He thought: I am eighteen. I have time.

He called Cece back. She answered on the second ring.

'I want to write this up properly,' he said. 'For the research record. Can you document the Vodou side in the same level of detail I'm going to document the Hecate side?'

'Already started,' she said.

He thought: of course she had. He thought: of course.
