Lyra POV:
"Left flank move!"
I snap my hand outward, releasing a pulse of lunar light. It slams into an ice wolf mid-leap, throwing it across the street.
It doesn't shatter. It rolls, lands, and rises again.
"That one should be broken," I mutter.
Kael cuts down another wolf beside me. His blade glows faintly, slicing through its neck. This one cracks apart, scattering into frozen shards.
"Then hit harder," he says.
"They're adapting," I reply.
"I can see that."
Three more wolves circle us. Not rushing. Watching. Waiting. That's new.
"Why aren't they attacking?" a soldier behind me asks.
"Because they're thinking," I answer.
Kael shifts slightly, placing himself between me and the nearest wolf.
"They're baiting," he says.
"Yeah."
I raise my staff.
"Then we don't wait."
I strike first. A burst of fire and lunar light explodes outward. Two wolves leap at the same time but they don't come from the front.
They split. One goes for me. The other goes for the soldier behind me.
"Move!" I shout.
The soldier reacts too late. Kael intercepts, stepping in with brutal speed. His blade cuts through the wolf mid-air, stopping it inches from the soldier's throat.
"Stay behind the line!" he snaps.
The remaining wolf lunges at me. I twist, catching it with a direct blast. This time, I hold the energy longer, forcing it through the creature's core.
It cracks then shatters completely.
Silence falls for a moment. Then I hear it. A low howl. Not from one direction. From several.
"They're calling each other," I say.
Kael wipes the frost from his blade. "Then we don't stay here."
"Agreed."
We move quickly through the streets. More soldiers join us. More wolves appear but they don't rush. They follow. Keeping distance. Watching.
"They're herding us," I say.
Kael glances around. "Into what?"
Before I can answer, the ground shakes.
A massive shape rises ahead. An ice giant. Then another. And another. Three of them block the path forward. Behind us, the wolves close in.
"Trap," Kael says.
"Yes."
The giants move in unison. That's new too. One raises its arm And slams it down. The ground cracks, sending shards of ice toward us like spears.
"Down!" I shout.
I throw up a barrier just in time. The shards slam into it, splintering against the light.
The impact forces me back a step.
"Too coordinated," I say through clenched teeth.
Kael steps forward. "Then we break the coordination."
He charges. Straight toward the nearest giant.
"Kael wait!"
Too late. The giant swings.
Kael dodges under the blow, closing the distance. He leaps, driving his blade into its leg.
The giant roars. But instead of reacting alone. The other two move instantly. One grabs for Kael. The other slams its fist toward him.
"Damn it!"
I lift the relic, channeling power through it. The energy surges stronger than before. I aim at the second giant
And redirect its movement. Its arm jerks off course, colliding with the third giant instead. They stagger into each other.
"Now!" I shout.
Kael pulls his blade free and strikes again, deeper this time. Cracks spread through the giant's leg. Then it collapses.
The remaining two adjust immediately. They split apart. Creating space.
"They're learning mid-fight," I say.
Kael backs toward me. "Then we don't give them time."
I switch tactics. Instead of raw force, I focus on control. I send a narrow beam of lunar energy into the ground beneath one giant.
The ice shifts under it unstable. Kael sees the opening instantly. He moves fast, striking at the weakened point. The giant stumbles. Then falls.
The last one roars and charges. Not blindly.Directly at me.
"Lyra!"
"I see it!"
I brace myself. At the last second Kael steps in front of me. His blade meets the giant's strike. The impact shakes the air. He holds for a second
Then his footing slips.
I grab his shoulder, pulling him back.
"Don't do that," I say sharply.
"You were the target," he replies.
"I can handle it."
"Not alone."
The giant swings again. I lift both hands this time. Fire and lunar light combine, spiraling together.
I release it in a focused blast. It hits the giant square in the chest. The energy burns through the ice, cracking it from the inside. Kael steps forward. And finishes it.
The giant shatters. The wolves scatter. For now. Kael exhales slowly.
"You're getting stronger."
"So are they," I reply.
"That's a problem."
"Yes."
A horn sounds in the distance. We both turn. Another section of the wall.
"More attacks," Kael says.
"Of course."
We run. By the time we reach the northern wall, the battle is already worse.
Soldiers are scattered. Wards flicker unevenly. And something new moves beyond the barrier. I stop.
"What is that?"
A long, massive shape coils along the mountainside. Its body glows with icy energy. Its eyes burn with pale blue fire. A serpent. But not like anything I've seen before.
"It's too big," a soldier says.
"No," I reply.
"It's evolving."
The serpent lifts its head. Then opens its mouth. A blast of frost fire rains down toward the wall.
"Shield!" I shout.
I raise the barrier just in time. The fire crashes against it, spreading across the surface. It doesn't fade. It burns. Cold and consuming.
"It's not normal ice," I say.
Kael steps closer. "Can you hold it?"
"For now."
"But not forever," he finishes.
"Yes."
The serpent strikes again. This time, it aims lower. At the base of the wall. It's trying to break through.
"It's targeting weak points," I say.
Kael grips his sword tighter. "Then we take it down."
"How?" a soldier asks.
I don't answer immediately. Instead, I study the creature. The way it moves. The way it attacks. Then I see it.
"It's drawing power from the mountain," I say.
"What?"
"The ground it's connected."
Kael looks at me. "Then we cut the connection."
"Yes."
I turn to the soldiers.
"Hold the line," I say.
"Do not let anything through."
"What about you?" one asks.
I glance at Kael.
"We go outside."
"Absolutely not," the soldier says.
"That's suicide."
Kael steps forward.
"Then don't follow."
We don't wait for permission. We move.
Outside the wall, the air feels heavier. The serpent turns immediately. It sees us.
"Good," I mutter. "Focus on us."
Kael nods once. It strikes. Fast. Too fast for something that size. Kael dodges, rolling under its attack. I lift the relic, redirecting its next strike into the ground. The impact cracks the earth.
"That's the link," I say.
I focus my magic downward. Into the ground. I feel the connection thin, but strong. The serpent reacts instantly. It pulls back, trying to protect it.
"Kael!"
"I'm on it."
He charges. The serpent lunges to intercept. I push more energy into the ground, weakening the link further. The serpent hesitates just for a second. That's enough.
Kael reaches the connection point. He drives his blade into it. The ground shatters. The energy snaps.
The serpent lets out a deafening roar. Its body cracks along its length. The glow fades.
"Now!" I shout.
I gather everything I have left. Fire. Lunar light. All of it. I release it in one final strike. It hits the serpent's core.
Kael follows immediately, cutting through the weakened structure.
The serpent breaks apart. Its body collapsing into frozen fragments. Silence follows.
Kael drops to one knee. I rush to him.
"Hey stay with me."
"I'm fine," he says.
But his voice is weaker. His breathing uneven.
I press my hand to his chest again. The glow responds but faintly.
"You're not fine," I say.
"It's getting worse," he admits.
I tighten my grip.
"We're stopping it."
He looks at me.
"You're trying."
"That's not enough," I reply.
He gives a faint, tired smile.
"It has to be."
Behind us, the soldiers cheer. The wall still stands. The attack is over. For now.
But I don't feel victory. I feel something else. The pattern. The change.
"They're learning," I say quietly.
Kael nods.
"And we're running out of time."
I help him stand. He leans on me for a second just a second before straightening again.
"We go back," I say.
"Yes."
As we walk toward the city. Another howl echoes. Different. Stronger. Smarter.
I stop. Kael stops with me. We both look toward the mountains. More shapes move there. Bigger. Faster.
"This isn't the last evolution," I say.
"No," he replies.
The ground trembles slightly. The wards flicker again.
And this time. The creatures don't just adapt. They prepare.
