Chapter 17 - Chapter 17: The Descent of Judgment

Night came too quickly.

The sky, though repaired, did not return to normal. It remained dim, as if something beyond it was blocking the light. The stars were faint, barely visible—like distant eyes watching through a veil.

Kai stood still, his senses stretched to their limit.

The battlefield had quieted, but the silence no longer felt natural.

It felt… occupied.

Behind him, Lina rested, her breathing weak but stable. Every now and then, her chest rose just enough to remind him she was still alive.

That was all that mattered.

For now.

But something was coming.

He could feel it.

Not like before—not the overwhelming, chaotic pressure of an enemy charging in. This was different.

Subtle.

Controlled.

Certain.

Kai's eyes lifted toward the sky.

"…You don't even hide it," he muttered.

The air shifted.

A single ripple.

Then—

It split.

A thin vertical line formed high above, cutting through the clouds like a blade through fabric. Light leaked from it—not warm, not bright—but cold, distant, and unnatural.

The world reacted instantly.

The wind died.

The ground stilled.

Even the air seemed to hold its breath.

Kai didn't move.

Because he understood—

This was not something he could interrupt.

The line widened.

Slowly.

Deliberately.

Until it became a doorway.

And from it—

Something stepped through.

A figure descended from the fracture in the sky, untouched by gravity, untouched by the world below. Their form was clear, but distant, as though they didn't fully belong in this space.

When their feet finally touched the ground—

Nothing broke.

Nothing shook.

But everything changed.

Kai felt it immediately.

A pressure unlike anything before.

Not overwhelming.

Not crushing.

But absolute.

Like standing before something that simply could not be challenged.

"…So this is him," the figure said.

Their voice was calm.

Neither male nor female.

Cold in a way that carried no emotion at all.

Kai didn't respond.

His body was already reacting, instinct pushing him to move, to defend, to fight—

But something deeper held him in place.

Because this—

Was different.

The figure's gaze shifted slightly, landing on him.

"…You're weaker than expected."

The words were simple.

Flat.

But they carried weight.

Kai's eyes hardened.

"Then leave."

The figure tilted their head slightly, as if analyzing the response.

"…You speak as though you have a choice."

The air tightened.

Kai stepped forward.

Despite the pain.

Despite the damage.

He moved.

Because standing still was not an option.

"State your purpose," he said.

The figure observed him for a moment longer.

Then—

"…Evaluation."

The word echoed strangely, as if it carried meaning beyond its sound.

Kai didn't hesitate.

"Then finish it and go."

For the first time—

The figure paused.

Not out of hesitation.

But interest.

"…You're not afraid."

Kai's answer came instantly.

"I've already faced worse."

A lie.

But not entirely.

Because fear was there.

Buried.

Controlled.

The figure took a single step forward.

The ground beneath them did not crack.

Did not react.

But Kai felt it—

A shift in reality itself.

"…That statement is incorrect," the figure said.

"And I will prove it."

The moment they finished speaking—

They disappeared.

Kai reacted instantly.

Too slow.

A force struck his chest.

Not heavy.

Not explosive.

But precise.

And that was enough.

His body lifted off the ground, thrown backward before crashing into the broken earth, sliding across it until he forced himself to stop.

Pain surged through him.

Sharp.

Immediate.

His already damaged body screamed in protest.

But he stood.

Again.

Across from him, the figure remained where they had been.

Untouched.

Unmoved.

"…Your reactions are delayed," they said. "Your body is damaged. Your energy is unstable."

Kai wiped the blood from his mouth.

"…And you talk too much."

He moved again.

This time faster.

Forcing his body to respond beyond its limit.

He closed the distance and struck.

But—

Nothing.

His attack passed through empty space.

The figure stood behind him.

"…Predictable."

Another strike.

Kai turned—

Too late.

The impact landed again.

Clean.

Precise.

Unavoidable.

He hit the ground harder this time.

His body barely responding as he forced himself up once more.

Breathing heavier.

Vision slightly blurred.

Still—

Standing.

The figure watched in silence.

"…You are persistent."

Kai steadied himself.

"That's not going to change."

For the first time—

The figure raised their hand.

"…Then we will accelerate the process."

The air shifted.

The pressure increased.

Not violently.

But undeniably.

Kai felt it immediately.

This time—

It wasn't a test.

This was execution.

The figure stepped forward.

And for the first time—

Kai felt it clearly.

He was not ready.

Not for this.

Not like this.

But behind him—

Lina was still there.

That alone erased hesitation.

Kai's eyes sharpened.

Even if he wasn't ready—

He would fight.

Because this time—

There was no one else to stand in his place.

The figure's hand moved slightly.

And the world responded.

The ground beneath Kai collapsed inward, the space around him compressing as if trying to crush him where he stood.

His body locked under the pressure.

His breathing stopped.

His vision blurred.

"…This is the difference," the figure said calmly.

Kai struggled.

Every muscle in his body screamed as he forced himself to move.

Just a step.

Just enough—

To resist.

The ground cracked beneath him.

A small movement.

But real.

The figure paused.

"…Interesting."

Kai lifted his head slowly.

His eyes burned.

Even now.

Even here.

"…I'm not done."

The words came out broken.

But unyielding.

For a brief moment—

The figure said nothing.

Then—

"…We will see."

The pressure increased again.

And the world began to break.

Behind him, Lina's fingers moved.

Weak.

Barely noticeable.

But real.

As if something inside her was responding—

To him.

To the danger.

To what was about to happen.

Far above, beyond the broken sky—

The others watched.

Silent.

Unmoving.

Because this—

Was no longer just an evaluation.

It was a decision.

And below—

Kai stood at the edge once again.

Not against an enemy he could match.

Not against a power he could understand.

But against something far beyond him.

And still—

He did not fall.
