Chapter 22 - Chapter 22: The City That Shouldn’t Exist

The land did not stay empty for long.

Hours passed as Kai and Lina continued forward, their pace steady despite the exhaustion that still lingered in their bodies. The terrain slowly changed—from open, silent plains to something more structured.

More… deliberate.

At first, it was subtle.

Broken stone beneath their feet.

Faint markings on the ground.

Then—

Walls.

Tall.

Ancient.

Stretching far into the distance on both sides, as if guarding something that had long been forgotten.

Lina slowed.

"…Do you see that?"

Kai had already stopped.

"…Yeah."

The structure ahead wasn't ruined.

It wasn't destroyed.

It was… intact.

A massive gate stood before them, carved from dark stone that seemed to absorb the light around it. Strange symbols were etched across its surface—faintly glowing, as if still alive after all this time.

"…This place shouldn't be here," Lina whispered.

Kai stepped closer.

The air around the gate felt heavy, similar to the boundaries they had crossed before—but deeper.

Older.

"…It's not abandoned," he said.

The moment he said it—

The gate moved.

A low, echoing sound filled the air as the massive doors slowly opened on their own, revealing darkness beyond.

Lina's breath caught.

"…Did we just trigger that?"

Kai didn't answer.

Because he already knew.

They weren't invited.

They were expected.

"…Stay close," he said.

Lina nodded.

They stepped inside.

The moment they crossed the gate—

The world shifted again.

But not like before.

This time—

It felt complete.

The space inside was a city.

A full city.

Buildings stretched in every direction, tall and silent, their structures unfamiliar yet perfectly intact. The streets were empty, but not abandoned. It felt as though life had once existed here—and could return at any moment.

But what made it worse—

Was the sky above.

It wasn't the same sky.

It was darker.

Closer.

As if this place existed separately from the world they knew.

"…Kai," Lina said quietly.

"I feel it too."

Eyes.

Not one.

Not two.

Many.

Watching.

From everywhere.

The windows.

The shadows.

The spaces between buildings.

They were not alone here.

A soft sound echoed behind them.

The gate—

Closed.

Lina turned sharply.

"…That's not good."

Kai remained calm.

"…We move forward."

Because there was no other option.

They walked deeper into the city.

Each step echoed slightly, the sound carrying farther than it should, as if the space itself was amplifying their presence.

Then—

A voice.

"…Intruders."

It came from above.

Cold.

Sharp.

Kai's eyes snapped upward.

A figure stood on one of the rooftops, looking down at them.

Not like the Observers.

Not distant.

Not emotionless.

This one—

Was real.

Human.

Or close enough.

"…You shouldn't be here," the figure continued.

More shapes appeared.

One by one.

Across rooftops.

Along the streets.

From the shadows.

Surrounding them.

Lina stepped closer to Kai instinctively.

"…They're everywhere…"

Kai's gaze moved carefully.

Counting.

Measuring.

"…Yeah."

Too many to fight head-on.

But something felt different.

These weren't like the creatures.

These weren't like the Observers.

These—

Were fighters.

The first figure dropped down from above, landing lightly in front of them.

A young man.

Calm.

But dangerous.

His eyes locked onto Kai.

"…You're the one," he said.

Kai didn't respond.

"…The one they marked."

Lina's expression tightened.

"…Marked?"

The man's gaze shifted briefly to her.

"…And the second one."

Silence.

Then—

"…You've caused a lot of noise outside," he continued. "And now… you walked straight into our territory."

Kai finally spoke.

"…Who are you?"

The man smiled slightly.

Not friendly.

"…We're what survives when the world breaks."

A pause.

Then—

"…We're hunters."

The word settled heavily.

Because this time—

Kai understood.

They weren't here to observe.

They weren't here to test.

They were here to act.

The man took a step forward.

"…And right now…"

The others moved.

Closing in.

From every direction.

"…you look like prey."

The air tightened.

Kai stepped forward slightly.

Lina didn't step back.

This time—

She stayed.

The tension snapped.

And then—

They attacked.

Fast.

Coordinated.

Precise.

Kai reacted instantly, blocking the first strike and shifting to counter—but another came from behind, forcing him to move again.

They weren't wild.

They weren't reckless.

They were trained.

And they worked together.

Lina lifted her hand, her energy forming again—but this time, she didn't release it immediately.

She waited.

Watched.

Learned.

Kai moved through the attacks, reading their rhythm, adjusting with each movement.

"…They're testing us," he muttered.

Lina's eyes sharpened.

"…Then let's show them."

One attacker broke through.

Heading straight for her.

This time—

She didn't panic.

She moved.

Her energy surged—

And she struck.

Clean.

Controlled.

The attacker was pushed back instantly.

Not injured—

But stopped.

The moment froze.

Just briefly.

But enough.

The man in front raised his hand.

"…Stop."

Everything halted.

Immediately.

The attackers stepped back.

Silence returned.

The man looked at them both again.

More carefully this time.

"…Interesting," he said.

His gaze lingered on Lina.

Then back to Kai.

"…You're not prey."

A pause.

Then—

"…Not yet."

Kai didn't relax.

"…Say what you want."

The man smiled again.

"…You can survive here."

Lina frowned slightly.

"…'Here'?"

The man turned slightly, gesturing to the city around them.

"…This place."

"…Is where people like you end up."

Kai's eyes narrowed.

"…People like us?"

The man's voice lowered slightly.

"…The ones the world has already started rejecting."

Silence.

Heavy.

Because those words—

Felt true.

The man stepped back.

"…You can fight us…"

A pause.

"…Or you can learn from us."

The choice hung in the air.

Clear.

Dangerous.

Important.

Kai didn't answer immediately.

Because this—

Was different.

Not an enemy.

Not yet.

But not safe either.

Lina looked at him briefly.

Then back at them.

"…What do you think?" she asked quietly.

Kai's gaze stayed forward.

Measuring.

Thinking.

Because whatever choice they made here—

Would change everything.

Above them, hidden beyond sight—

Something watched.

Not the hunters.

Not the city.

But them.

And this time—

It was waiting.
