Chapter 26 - Chapter 26: The Key Beneath Her Skin

Night settled over the city without warning.

There was no sunset.

No gradual dimming of light.

One moment, the sky above the hidden city held its usual muted glow—and the next, it darkened completely, as if something had simply decided that day was over.

The streets grew quieter.

Doors closed.

Movement slowed.

Even the fighters who had shown no fear during battle now carried a different kind of tension—subtle, controlled, but present.

Kai noticed immediately.

"They change at night," he said.

Lina, walking beside him, nodded slightly. "Yeah… it feels different."

It did.

The air itself seemed heavier, thicker, like it was pressing closer to the ground. Sounds didn't travel as far. Even their footsteps felt muted, swallowed by something unseen.

The man who had brought them into the city led the way through narrow streets, his pace steady but deliberate.

"…Stay inside after this," he said without turning. "Until you understand the rules here."

Kai's eyes narrowed slightly. "What rules?"

The man slowed.

Just slightly.

"…At night," he said, "we don't go looking for trouble."

A pause.

"…Because sometimes, it looks back."

Lina didn't speak after that.

Neither did Kai.

Because both of them understood—

That wasn't a warning meant to scare them.

It was experience.

They stopped in front of a building set slightly apart from the others.

It wasn't large.

But it felt… solid.

Safer than the rest.

"…You'll stay here," the man said.

Kai studied the structure briefly before nodding.

"…And you?"

"…Close enough."

Not an answer.

But enough.

The man turned to leave—

Then paused.

His gaze shifted to Lina.

Not casually.

Not lightly.

But with clear attention.

"…You," he said.

Lina straightened slightly. "…Me?"

"…Be careful."

Her brows furrowed slightly. "About what?"

A brief silence.

Then—

"…Your power isn't just yours."

The words hung in the air.

Heavy.

Unclear.

Lina's chest tightened slightly.

"…What does that mean?"

But the man didn't answer.

He simply turned—

And walked away.

Leaving them alone.

Inside, the building was quiet.

Simple.

A single room with enough space for both of them, dimly lit by a soft glow embedded into the walls. No windows. No clear connection to the outside.

It felt… sealed.

Lina stepped in slowly, looking around.

"…This place feels strange."

Kai closed the door behind them.

"…Everything here does."

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

Then Lina sat down, her movements slower now that the tension of the day had caught up with her.

Her hand lifted slightly.

That energy—

It was still there.

"…Kai."

He looked at her.

"…Try to feel it," she said.

Kai frowned slightly.

"…Feel what?"

"…Me."

The word was quiet.

But clear.

He stepped closer.

Not fully understanding—

But trusting.

Lina closed her eyes.

"…Just stay close."

The air shifted.

Faintly at first.

Then more clearly.

Kai felt it.

Not like his own power.

Not sharp.

Not heavy.

But…

Warm.

Unstable.

Like something just beginning to exist.

His expression changed slightly.

"…It's different."

Lina nodded slowly.

"…It feels like it's moving on its own."

The energy around her hand flickered—

Then spread slightly.

Up her arm.

Faint lines of light appeared beneath her skin, like something tracing through her veins.

Kai's eyes sharpened immediately.

"…Lina."

She opened her eyes.

"…I see it too."

Her voice was calm.

Too calm.

"…It's not just energy."

The glow pulsed.

Once.

Twice.

Stronger each time.

Then—

Pain.

Her body tensed suddenly, her breath catching as the light beneath her skin brightened sharply.

"Kai—!"

He moved instantly, catching her before she fell forward.

"…What's happening?"

"I—I don't know—!"

The energy surged again.

This time violently.

The light spread further, across her arm, toward her shoulder, pulsing like something alive—something trying to move through her.

Kai's grip tightened.

"…Stop it."

"I can't!"

Her voice broke slightly.

"…It's not listening!"

The air in the room shifted suddenly.

Heavy.

Oppressive.

Kai felt it immediately.

Not from outside.

From her.

"…It's reacting," he said.

"To what?"

His answer came quickly.

"…To me."

The realization hit instantly.

The moment he had stepped closer—

The energy had changed.

Grown stronger.

More unstable.

Lina's breathing became uneven, her body shaking slightly as the light beneath her skin pulsed harder.

"…Move back," she said.

Kai didn't move.

"…No."

"…Kai—!"

"I'm not leaving you."

The words came sharp.

Firm.

No hesitation.

The energy surged again—

And this time—

It responded.

Not wildly.

Not violently.

But differently.

It slowed.

Just slightly.

Lina's eyes widened.

"…It stopped…"

Kai didn't move.

Didn't speak.

He just stayed.

Close.

Steady.

And slowly—

The energy began to calm.

The light beneath her skin dimmed, the pulsing slowing until it became faint again, then finally—

Still.

Silence filled the room.

Lina's breathing steadied.

Her body relaxed.

But she didn't pull away.

"…It listened," she whispered.

Kai's gaze didn't leave her.

"…No."

A pause.

"…It reacted."

Lina looked at him.

"…To you."

The realization settled between them.

Heavy.

Unavoidable.

Because now—

It made sense.

Why the creature had targeted her.

Why the Observers had called her a variable.

Why the man had warned her.

Her power—

Wasn't just hers.

It was connected.

To him.

Kai exhaled slowly.

"…That's not good."

Lina let out a weak breath.

"…No… it's not."

But neither of them moved.

Because despite the danger—

Despite the unknown—

There was something else there.

Something they couldn't ignore.

A connection.

Real.

Unstable.

But powerful.

Outside—

The night deepened.

And far below the city—

Something stirred again.

Stronger this time.

As if it had felt it too.

Deep beneath layers of stone and silence—

The door trembled.

Not from force.

But from recognition.

And whatever lay behind it—

Was beginning to wake up.
