Chapter 27 - Chapter 27: The Pulse Beneath the City

Kai didn't sleep.

Even after Lina's breathing steadied, even after the light beneath her skin faded into something barely visible, he remained awake—sitting close, watching, listening.

Because something had changed.

Not just in her.

In the world.

He could feel it.

A faint rhythm.

Slow.

Distant.

But constant.

At first, he thought it was his own heartbeat—still uneven from everything his body had endured.

But no.

This was different.

It didn't come from inside him.

It came from below.

Kai's eyes shifted slightly toward the floor.

The pulse came again.

Soft.

Heavy.

Like something massive… breathing beneath the city.

"…You feel it too, don't you?"

Lina's voice was quiet.

He looked at her.

She was awake.

Not fully sitting up, but her eyes were open, steady, aware.

"…Yeah," he said.

She didn't look afraid.

But she wasn't calm either.

"…It started after… that thing earlier," she said.

"The creature."

Kai nodded once.

"It's connected."

Lina slowly pushed herself up, her movements careful, still recovering.

"…No," she said softly.

"…It's reacting."

Kai's expression sharpened slightly.

"…To us."

Silence followed.

Because that made more sense than anything else.

The energy inside her.

The way it had surged when he got close.

The way the creature had targeted her.

And now—

Whatever was below…

Was responding.

The pulse came again.

Stronger this time.

The faint light beneath Lina's skin flickered in response.

She inhaled sharply.

"…Kai."

"I see it."

The glow wasn't violent like before.

But it was active.

Alive.

As if something deep below was reaching upward—

Trying to connect.

Kai stood slowly.

"…We need to see what's down there."

Lina looked at him.

"…Now?"

He didn't hesitate.

"…Before it gets worse."

A brief pause.

Then—

She nodded.

"…I'm coming with you."

He didn't argue.

Not this time.

Because whatever this was—

It involved both of them.

The city at night was not empty.

It was quiet.

But not still.

As they stepped outside, the air felt heavier than before, pressing closer to their skin. The streets were dim, lit only by faint lights embedded into the structures around them.

No one moved openly.

But Kai could feel them.

Watching.

From behind doors.

From above.

From the dark.

"…They know," Lina whispered.

Kai didn't look around.

"…Yeah."

But no one stopped them.

No one spoke.

It was as if the entire city was waiting.

For something.

For them.

They didn't have to search long.

The pulse guided them.

Down narrow streets.

Through silent paths.

Until they reached it.

A structure at the edge of the city.

Different from the others.

Lower.

Older.

And surrounded by deep cracks in the ground, as if something beneath it had been trying to break free for a long time.

Kai stopped.

"…This is it."

Lina felt it immediately.

Stronger now.

The energy inside her reacted instantly, the faint glow beneath her skin returning, brighter than before.

"…It's calling…" she whispered.

The entrance was already open.

A dark stairway descending into the earth.

No guards.

No barriers.

Just—

Access.

"…That's not a good sign," Lina said.

Kai stepped forward.

"…No."

But he didn't stop.

She followed.

The deeper they went—

The quieter it became.

Not just silence.

Absence.

Even their footsteps felt distant, like the space around them didn't fully exist.

The walls were rough, carved stone, but old—far older than the city above.

And the pulse—

Stronger.

Closer.

Each step made it clearer.

It wasn't just a sound.

It was something alive.

Waiting.

They reached the bottom.

A wide chamber opened before them.

And at the center—

They saw it.

The door.

It wasn't made of wood.

Or metal.

Or anything familiar.

It looked… grown.

Formed from the same shifting, jagged fragments as the creature they had fought—but stable, locked into place, forming a massive sealed structure embedded deep into the ground.

And across its surface—

Light.

Faint.

Moving.

Like veins.

Like something inside it was alive.

Lina froze.

Her hand lifted slightly without thinking.

The energy inside her surged instantly in response.

"…It's the same…" she whispered.

Kai stepped closer.

"…Yeah."

Because he could feel it too.

The same presence.

The same pressure.

But deeper.

Much deeper.

"…This is where they come from," he said.

The creatures.

The leaks.

Everything.

The pulse came again.

Louder now.

The light across the door brightened.

And then—

It reacted.

To her.

The patterns shifted.

The surface moved slightly.

Not opening—

But responding.

Lina took a step forward.

Without thinking.

"…It knows me."

Kai's hand caught her wrist immediately.

"…Don't."

But she didn't pull away.

"…Kai…"

Her voice was quiet.

Drawn.

"…I think…"

The light spread further across the door.

Reaching.

Toward her.

"…I think I'm part of it."

Silence.

Heavy.

Impossible.

Kai's grip tightened slightly.

"…No."

The word came immediately.

Firm.

"…You're not."

But even as he said it—

He could feel the truth bending around them.

Because the door—

Was reacting to her.

Not him.

Not the city.

Her.

The pulse grew stronger.

Faster.

The light beneath her skin answered it.

Matching it.

For a moment—

Perfectly.

The chamber trembled.

Dust fell from above.

The air shifted.

And then—

A voice.

Not from the door.

Not from outside.

But everywhere.

"…Key… found…"

Both of them froze.

The words echoed slowly, distorting through the space like they didn't belong to any one direction.

"…Initiating… awakening…"

Kai's eyes sharpened instantly.

"…Lina, step back."

But it was already too late.

The light surged.

From the door.

From her.

From everywhere.

The connection—

Had been made.

Far above—

The city stirred.

Every fighter felt it.

Every watcher turned.

Because this—

Was not a small change.

This was the beginning.

And deep below—

The door…

Began to open.
