Chapter 13 - Chapter 13 – The One Who Took My Place

I couldn't move.

It was me.

Standing there.

Across the street.

Same face.

Same height.

Same everything.

But something was off.

He wasn't breathing like me.

He wasn't shaking.

He was… calm.

Too calm.

Like he belonged.

And I didn't.

My chest tightened.

"What… are you?" I whispered.

He didn't answer.

He just stared.

Watching me.

The same way they watched me.

My heart started racing.

"No…"

I took a step back.

He took a step forward.

At the same time.

Perfect sync.

Like a mirror.

But delayed.

Wrong.

"Stop…"

I stepped back again.

This time—

He didn't copy me.

He kept walking forward.

Alone.

Toward me.

My breathing broke.

"No, no… stay there."

He didn't stop.

Each step he took felt heavier than it should.

Like the ground itself was reacting to him.

Like reality accepted him more than it accepted me.

I clenched my fists.

"You're not real."

Silence.

Then—

He smiled.

Slow.

Unnatural.

Like he learned it… not felt it.

A chill ran down my spine.

"I am," he said.

My voice.

Exactly my voice.

Perfect.

"But you're not."

My heart dropped.

"That's not funny."

"It's not supposed to be."

His tone didn't change.

Flat.

Empty.

Cold.

I shook my head.

"No… I'm right here."

"Not anymore."

The words hit like a punch.

I stepped back again.

But my legs felt weak now.

Unstable.

"What did you do?" I asked.

He stopped a few steps away.

Close enough.

Too close.

"I didn't do anything."

He tilted his head slightly.

"You did."

My mind raced.

"What are you talking about?"

"You looked."

Each word was sharp.

Clear.

"You searched."

My breathing became uneven.

"You crossed."

The same words.

The same meaning.

Everything connected.

"No…"

"You opened the space."

A pressure built in my chest.

"You made room."

My vision blurred.

And then—

"I filled it."

Silence.

Heavy.

Crushing.

"That's impossible."

"It's already done."

My hands started shaking again.

I looked around.

People walking.

Cars passing.

Life continuing.

And no one—

No one saw what was happening.

"Why do you look like me?" I asked.

He smiled again.

That same wrong smile.

"Because I'm supposed to be you."

My stomach twisted.

"No… I am me."

He shook his head slowly.

"You were."

The past tense hit harder than anything else.

"You lost your place."

"I didn't lose anything!"

"You did."

His eyes locked onto mine.

"You lost time."

My heart pounded.

"You lost memory."

Each word felt heavier.

"You lost recognition."

I couldn't breathe.

"And now…"

A pause.

Then—

"You lose existence."

Everything inside me collapsed.

"No… no, there has to be a way back."

He didn't answer.

He just watched me.

Like I wasn't important anymore.

Like I was already gone.

"I can fix this," I said quickly.

"I just need to—"

"You can't."

The interruption was instant.

Cold.

Final.

"You think you're the first?"

My body froze.

"…What?"

"You think you're special?"

Silence.

"You're just earlier than most."

A wave of fear crashed into me.

"How many…?"

He didn't answer.

Instead—

He looked past me.

At something behind me.

And for a second—

His expression changed.

Not fear.

Not shock.

Recognition.

"They're watching," he said quietly.

I didn't turn this time.

I couldn't.

"I don't care," I whispered.

"I just want my life back."

He looked at me again.

And for the first time—

Something human appeared in his eyes.

Something… close to pity.

"You can't go back."

My heart broke slowly.

"Why?"

A long pause.

Then—

"Because you already left."

Silence.

I felt it again.

That presence.

Closer.

Heavier.

Like the world was closing in.

"What happens to me now?" I asked.

My voice barely there.

He stepped back.

Slowly.

Creating distance.

"You fade."

My breathing stopped.

"No…"

"You become like them."

A cold shiver ran through me.

"No, I won't."

"You don't get to choose."

The pressure increased.

My vision started flickering.

Like reality was unstable.

"Wait—!" I reached toward him.

Too late.

He was already turning away.

Walking.

Toward my house.

My house.

"No!"

I tried to run.

My body didn't move.

My legs refused.

Like something was holding me in place.

Watching.

Waiting.

He didn't look back.

Not even once.

The door opened.

He walked in.

And it closed behind him.

Like nothing had changed.

Like everything was normal.

Like I was never there.

My knees hit the ground.

Hard.

I didn't feel it.

I didn't feel anything.

My hands trembled.

Slowly…

I pulled out the notebook.

Opened it.

The page was already written.

"Replacement complete."

My heart stopped.

"No…"

The ink moved again.

One last line.

"You lasted longer than most."

My vision blurred completely.

And in the reflection of the page…

For a split second—

I couldn't see my face anymore.
