Chapter 19 - Chapter 19 – The First Break

I didn't stop walking.

Even after the messages.

Even after the voice.

Even after everything.

If I stopped—

I felt like something would catch me.

Not physically.

Something worse.

Like I would freeze…

And never move again.

My steps became faster.

Too fast.

People started noticing.

Or maybe I was just imagining it.

I lowered my head slightly.

Blending in.

Trying not to draw attention.

That was the new rule.

Don't notice.

Don't be noticed.

Because now—

It went both ways.

I reached a quieter street.

Less people.

Less noise.

Bad idea.

I realized it too late.

Silence again.

That same empty silence.

It followed me.

Or maybe—

It was waiting here.

I stopped.

Slowly.

Carefully.

"This is not good…" I whispered.

My voice sounded small.

Like it didn't belong in the air anymore.

I looked around—

But not directly.

Just enough to scan.

No one close.

No one watching.

At least…

No one visible.

My phone vibrated again.

I didn't take it out this time.

"No."

I shook my head.

"I'm not playing your game."

Silence.

Then—

A sound.

Not from the phone.

From the street.

A dragging noise.

Soft.

Slow.

Like something being pulled across the ground.

My body froze instantly.

"No…"

It was closer than before.

Much closer.

And I hadn't looked.

That was wrong.

That shouldn't happen.

"They said it…"

I whispered.

"They don't need my eyes anymore…"

The realization hit hard.

Before—

Looking was the trigger.

Now?

Just being aware was enough.

The sound stopped.

Right behind me.

I felt it.

Cold.

Close.

Breathing—

No.

Not breathing.

Something else.

Something unnatural.

I clenched my fists.

"Don't turn…"

My voice trembled.

But my body—

My body wasn't listening anymore.

A slow movement.

Just a little.

Just enough—

I turned.

Nothing.

Empty street.

No one behind me.

No sound.

No shadow.

Just silence.

My heart was pounding like crazy.

"I saw nothing…"

I whispered.

"Nothing happened…"

But that was the problem.

Something did happen.

I felt it.

I knew it.

And yet—

There was nothing.

A reflection caught my eye.

A shop window.

I froze again.

Slowly…

I looked at it.

My reflection stood there.

Normal.

Breathing.

Alive.

But behind me—

Something moved.

Not in the real street.

Only in the reflection.

A shape.

Distorted.

Wrong.

Standing right behind me.

My breath stopped completely.

"No…"

I didn't turn this time.

I just stared.

The reflection smiled.

Not me.

It.

My reflection…

Was smiling.

And I wasn't.

My heart dropped.

"That's not me…"

The thing behind me leaned closer.

In the reflection only.

Its face almost touching mine.

Eyes—

Empty.

Too empty.

Like something erased everything inside them.

"You looked."

The voice came again.

But this time—

It didn't come from behind me.

It came from the reflection.

From… me.

I stepped back instantly.

The reflection didn't follow correctly.

It lagged.

Just for a second.

But that was enough.

Enough to confirm it.

"They're inside now…"

My voice broke.

"This is bad…"

No.

This was worse than before.

Before—

They were outside.

Now?

They were using me.

The reflection stopped smiling.

Slowly—

It raised its hand.

I didn't.

It waved.

Like it was greeting me.

Or saying goodbye.

My phone vibrated violently.

Again and again.

I didn't want to look.

But I did.

I pulled it out.

New message.

"First break achieved."

My chest tightened.

"What break…?"

Another message.

"Separation is no longer complete."

My hands started shaking.

"No…"

Another one.

Final.

"We are closer now."

I dropped the phone.

It hit the ground.

But I didn't pick it up.

I couldn't.

My eyes were locked on the reflection.

Because now—

It wasn't just smiling.

It was…

Moving.

On its own.

If your reflection started moving on its own… would you still trust yourself? 👀
