Chapter 6 - The Mentor

The headlights were getting closer.

Elias stood at the edge of where the Echo zone had been just seconds ago, his chest rising and falling fast. The desert had snapped back to normal, but it didn't feel normal anymore.

Nothing did.

The wind moved across the sand like nothing had happened. The future city was gone. The flickering towers, the glowing streets, the strange gravity—all of it erased in an instant.

But Elias knew better now.

It hadn't disappeared.

It had just… slipped away.

The Chronite crystal in his pocket pulsed faintly.

The handheld device flickered in his grip.

And the words of the Remnant scout echoed in his mind.

The past is no longer safe.

A low hum cut through the night.

Not from the approaching vehicles.

From behind him.

Elias turned slowly.

The air rippled.

At first, he thought it was another Echo forming.

But this was different.

This wasn't a place.

This was something moving.

A shape began to form in the space where the future city had been.

Dark.

Distorted.

Like a shadow trying to force itself into reality.

Elias took a step back.

"What now…"

The shape solidified.

The Remnant scout.

But something was wrong.

The armor flickered violently, the blue lines across its surface pulsing erratically. The visor glowed brighter than before—unstable.

The scout stumbled slightly as it fully materialized.

"…Temporal misalignment…" it muttered.

Elias frowned.

"I thought you—"

The scout's head snapped toward him.

The weapon in its hand powered up instantly.

The spinning rings around the emitter glowed bright blue.

"Anomaly detected," the scout said, voice sharper now.

Elias raised his hands instinctively.

"Hey—wait, you just—"

"Temporal contamination confirmed."

The weapon aimed directly at his chest.

"Sync interference detected."

Elias' heart dropped.

"That's not good, right?"

The scout didn't answer.

It fired.

A burst of blue energy shot toward Elias.

He barely had time to react.

The handheld device in his hand pulsed.

Time slowed.

The energy blast crawled through the air like thick liquid.

Elias moved.

Not fast.

But fast enough.

The blast missed him by inches and struck the ground behind him, exploding sand into the air.

Time snapped back.

Elias stumbled, barely keeping his balance.

"Okay—definitely not friendly anymore," he muttered.

The scout advanced.

Its movements were faster now.

More aggressive.

"Target must be neutralized," it said.

"That's new," Elias replied, backing away.

The scout fired again.

Elias dove to the side.

The blast hit a rock, shattering it instantly.

The ground shook slightly.

Elias scrambled to his feet and ran.

But the desert offered no cover.

The scout moved with terrifying speed, closing the distance quickly.

Elias reached into his pocket, grabbing the Chronite fragment.

It pulsed violently now.

Another vision tried to force its way into his mind—

He pushed it back.

"Not now!"

The scout raised its weapon again.

This time, it didn't fire immediately.

The rings around the emitter spun faster.

Charging.

Elias froze.

He could feel it.

Whatever that weapon was about to do—

He wouldn't survive it.

The air grew heavier.

The sound around him seemed to fade.

Even the approaching vehicles felt distant now.

Everything narrowed down to this moment.

The scout.

The weapon.

The end.

Then—

Everything stopped.

Not slowed.

Stopped.

The wind froze mid-motion.

Grains of sand hung in the air like suspended dust.

The faint sound of engines from the distance cut off completely.

Even the light from the approaching vehicles seemed frozen in place.

Elias blinked.

"What…"

The scout stood in front of him.

Frozen.

Mid-motion.

Weapon raised.

Energy still building inside the emitter.

But it wasn't moving.

Nothing was.

Elias looked around slowly.

The entire desert had been locked in place.

Every single thing.

Except him.

And then he saw her.

She stood a few feet away, just outside the frozen moment.

A woman.

Calm.

Still.

Her dark clothing moved slightly, even though the air itself was frozen.

Her eyes were focused on the scout.

Sharp.

Controlled.

Like she had done this before.

Elias stared at her.

"You… did this?"

She didn't look at him immediately.

Instead, she walked slowly toward the frozen scout.

Her movements were effortless, like she wasn't affected by whatever had stopped everything else.

"Yes," she said simply.

Her voice was steady.

Grounded.

Real.

Elias stepped closer carefully.

"How?"

The woman reached out and placed her hand lightly on the scout's weapon.

The glowing energy inside the emitter froze completely.

Like a paused image.

"Stasis," she said.

Elias frowned.

"Stasis?"

She finally looked at him.

Her eyes studied him carefully.

Not like the agents.

Not like the scout.

Different.

"You're Elias," she said.

It wasn't a question.

Elias blinked.

"Yeah… how do you know that?"

She didn't answer immediately.

Instead, she stepped back from the frozen scout.

The moment her hand left the weapon, the energy inside it flickered slightly—but remained suspended.

"Because I've been looking for you," she said.

Elias felt a strange tension in his chest.

"Okay… that's not creepy at all."

The woman ignored the comment.

"You shouldn't be alive," she said.

Elias let out a short laugh.

"Yeah, I'm starting to hear that a lot tonight."

Her expression didn't change.

"Not like this," she said.

Elias frowned.

"What does that mean?"

She stepped closer.

"You're a Sync."

There it was again.

Elias sighed.

"Okay, seriously—what is a Sync?"

The woman studied him for a moment.

Then she spoke.

"A Sync is someone whose brain has adapted to Chronite exposure," she said.

"Your neural patterns have aligned with the frequency of the future."

Elias blinked.

"That… doesn't sound good."

"It isn't," she said calmly.

He looked at the frozen scout.

"And that thing?"

"Remnant," she replied.

"From the future."

Elias ran a hand through his hair.

"Yeah, I got that part."

The woman nodded slightly.

"Then you also understand what this means."

Elias shook his head.

"No, actually, I don't."

She looked around at the frozen desert.

At the suspended moment.

Then back at him.

"The Lapse has begun," she said.

The words felt heavy.

Elias swallowed.

"The Lapse?"

She stepped closer.

"It's the reason the satellite fell."

"The reason Echo zones are appearing."

"The reason your sister is gone."

Elias' chest tightened.

"You know about Lena?"

Her expression softened slightly.

"Yes."

"Then where is she?"

"She's alive," the woman said.

Elias exhaled sharply.

"But not here," she added.

His hope dropped slightly.

"Then where?"

"In the future."

Elias looked away briefly.

Trying to process everything.

The woman continued.

"The timelines are overlapping," she said.

"The future is bleeding into the present."

Elias shook his head.

"That doesn't make sense."

"It doesn't have to," she replied.

"It's happening anyway."

Elias looked back at her.

"Why?"

She hesitated for a moment.

Then answered.

"Because something went wrong."

That didn't help.

"With what?"

She didn't respond immediately.

Instead, she looked toward the frozen horizon.

Where the DTS vehicles sat locked in place.

"They know," she said quietly.

Elias followed her gaze.

"The agents?"

"The government," she corrected.

"They've known about Chronite for years."

"They've been studying Echo events in secret."

Elias frowned.

"So they're not just showing up now?"

"No," she said.

"They've been preparing for this."

"For what?"

She looked back at him.

"For the end."

Elias let out a dry laugh.

"Okay, now you're definitely not helping."

The woman didn't react.

"Your exposure changed you," she said.

"You can see the future."

"You can interact with Echoes."

"And eventually…"

She paused.

"You'll become something more."

Elias crossed his arms slightly.

"More like what?"

She didn't answer.

Instead, she turned back toward the frozen scout.

"This one won't stay frozen forever," she said.

Elias looked at it.

"How long do we have?"

"Not long."

Elias nodded slowly.

"Great."

He looked back at her.

"So what now?"

She met his gaze.

"Now you decide."

"Decide what?"

"Whether you keep running," she said.

"Or whether you start understanding what you've become."

Elias let out a breath.

"Do I get a third option?"

"No."

He looked at the frozen world around them.

The suspended moment.

The impossible situation.

Then back at her.

"…Who are you?" he asked.

The woman held his gaze.

"My name is Sola," she said.

The name settled into the silence.

And for the first time since the night began—

Elias felt like he wasn't completely alone anymore.

Behind them, the frozen scout flickered slightly.

Time was starting to move again.

And whatever came next—

Nothing would ever be normal again.
