Chapter 17 - Soul Space

The boarding house room was quiet when they returned.

Adrian sat on the edge of his bed, a smile on his face. He'd finally entered the academy against all odds. By morning, he would start life as a student in a fantasy world.

But tonight, he had something else to do.

He pulled up the system interface.

[Quest Complete: Enter Soulmark Academy]

[Reward: 50 EXP]

[Bonus Reward: Beginner's Equipment Set]

A box materialized in his hands, wrapped in dark cloth. He stared at it for a moment, then untied the string. Inside was a belt with a reinforced sheath, a set of leather bracers, and a small pouch that pulsed faintly when he touched it.

[Equipment Received]

[Reinforced Sheath — reduces weapon wear by 15%]

[Leather Bracers — minor protection for forearms, +2% parry effectiveness]

[Soul Pouch — holds up to 10 monster cores or essence fragments]

He picked up the bracers first. The leather was stiff but flexible, molded to fit his forearms. He strapped them on and flexed his hands, watching the leather move with him. It fit perfectly. He had not owned anything that fit perfectly in a long time.

He fastened the belt, sliding his blade into the new sheath. It slid in smoothly, the metal reinforcement along the edges adding weight he hadn't expected. He drew it and sheathed it again, testing the motion. It was smoother than his old one.

He thought about the sheath he had been using since the Scar—worn leather, cracked at the edges, held together with twine. He had been meaning to replace it. Now he did not have to.

The pouch he tucked into his coat, near his chest. It was warm against his skin, like something alive but not quite. Waiting to be filled.

He turned back to the system and checked his Experience Points.

[Total EXP: 480/500]

Twenty points from E-rank. He let out a breath. He was almost there.

Another notification appeared beneath it.

[Soul Energy Control: Unlocked]

He stared at the words as if they were salvation and, in a way, they were. He'd gone through seven days of waking up before dawn. Seven mornings of sitting still when all he wanted was sleep. Seven days of push-ups and squats until his arms gave out. He had done it all just for this.

He reached for the warmth in his chest. It came easily now, flowing through him like water finding its course.

A bar appeared at the edge of the screen.

[Soul Energy: 100/100]

He had a gauge now. It was strange, seeing his own energy measured like that. But it was also comforting. It would help him know when to conserve his energy.

He pulled up his skill list and was surprised to see a whole new set of information.

He closed the interface. Most of it was locked and greyed out. He could only access them if he continued to grow stronger.

However, it wasn't all that bad. The bracers were on his arms. The sheath was at his hip. The pouch was warm against his chest. He had something now. It wasn't much but it was enough for now.

He looked at Lilith. She was sitting on the bed across from him, watching. Her ash-blonde hair was pinned back, her amber eyes calm. But through the bond, he felt her attention.

He turned away, ready to stand, when her voice stopped him.

"You seem to be forgetting something," she said. "Your soul space."

His mouth formed an O as he realized that she was right. He closed his eyes and reached deep into his consciousness.

He found it easier than he'd expected. Perhaps the system had made things easier for him, he wasn't sure.

The soul space was dark and empty. No floor, no walls, no ceiling. Just him, floating in nothing, the darkness stretching in every direction.

Then light bloomed behind him.

He turned. Lilith stood there with her mesmerizing face, silver hair and deep crimson eyes. She had taken off her disguise, retaining her original appearance. Just the way she had been in the ruins.

His chest tightened as he couldn't help but stare at her. She had probably followed him into the space.

"Finally," she said. "I was starting to think you'd never unlock it."

He looked around. "It's empty."

"It always is at the start. You have a lot of work to do." She walked past him, her steps silent on nothing. "It's your space. Make it into whatever you like."

He looked at the emptiness. A king should have a castle. That's what the system would've wanted. A court. A throne. Something grand enough to hold nine Queens.

But he didn't want grand. At least not yet. Besides he might not be able to do anything huge in such a short amount of time. If his theory was correct, creating anything in his soul space might use up his soul energy.

'But it wouldn't hurt to try something'

He thought about his father's study. The fire. The way the room smelled like old paper and tea. The way his mother would sit on the arm of the chair, and the room would feel full. Safe. He had not felt safe in a long time.

He closed his eyes and held that feeling. He pulled it out of memory, out of the place where he had kept it locked away since he was seven years old. He pushed it into the darkness.

When he opened them, a fire burned between them. A small, flickering flame, floating in the dark.

Lilith stared at it. Her arms dropped to her sides. "A hearth?"

Adrian watched the flames. "It's not much."

"Well, it's something."

She sat down beside it. There was no floor, but she sat anyway, the darkness holding her. He sat across from her, and the firelight caught her face, warmed the red of her eyes. She looked softer like this. Less like something carved from stone.

"Your father," she said. "You were thinking of him."

He nodded. His throat felt tight.

"Tell me about him."

He looked at the fire. "He read to me at night. I'd sit on the floor and he'd sit in his chair, and he'd read until I fell asleep." He watched the flames flicker. "My mother would come in sometimes. Bring tea. She'd sit on the arm of his chair and listen. And he'd read slower, like he didn't want it to end."

He had not thought about that night in years. The way his father's voice had sounded. The way his mother's hand had rested on his father's shoulder. The way the fire had crackled, and the room had been warm, and he had felt like nothing could ever hurt them.

She was quiet for a moment. "I had someone once. Someone who read to me."

He looked at her. Her voice had changed. It was softer.

"What happened?"

"He wanted things. Power. Conquest." She shrugged, but it was not a careless shrug. It was heavy. "But I wanted him to go back to the person he once was."

He did not know what to say. He sat there, the fire burning between them, and waited.

She looked at him. "You're not him. You ask for help. You don't run. You built a fire in the dark because you wanted me to be warm." Her voice was quiet. "He would never have done that."

She reached across the fire and took his hand. Her skin was cool, but through the bond, he felt warmth.. He could feel her emotions. The years she had waited. The weight of things she did not speak about. The choice she had made, standing in the dark, watching him fight and bleed and refuse to die.

"You could have left," he said. "In the ruins."

"I could have."

"Why didn't you?"

She squeezed his hand. "Because you didn't run. Because you stood in the dark, with nothing, and you didn't run." She looked at him. "I've been waiting for someone who wouldn't run."

He looked at the darkness beyond the firelight. "A castle. A king should have a castle. That's what the system wants."

"And what do you want?"

He thought about it. The fire flickered between them.

"I want to build something that doesn't burn down."

She smiled. "Then build it."

He looked at the darkness. Somewhere in the emptiness, he imagined the shape of a grand castle. Walls. Halls. Rooms for each of them. A throne, someday. But not yet.

"You can stay here," he said. "When you're not with me."

She nodded. "As long as you're willing."

He looked at her hand in his. "I am."

Her smile widened.

---

He opened his eyes.

The boarding house room was dark. Lilith sat on the bed across from him.

"How long have I been out?" he asked.

"Three hours."

He rubbed his face. It felt like minutes. He pulled up the interface.

[Soul Space: Occupied]

[Soul Energy: 97/100]

[Bond Points: Lilith — 15/100]

He stared at the numbers. His theory was right. The fire had cost him three units of his soul energy. He noticed that the bond points had increased. Their heartfelt talk had brought them a bit closer to each other.

He looked at her.

"I like the hearth," she said.

He nodded. "I'll build more."

She smiled.

He looked toward the window, knowing that by tomorrow they would be walking through the academy gates, into classes, training, and a world of nobles who believed they owned everything, a world where he would have to pretend to be someone he wasn't.

But tonight was different. Tonight, he had built something real, a fire in the dark, a place that belonged only to them.
