Chapter 18 - Chapter 18: The Second Trial

Dawn came cold.

Not gentle.

Not quiet.

The mountains didn't wake—

They revealed.

Amir stood at the edge of the village.

Mist clung low to the ground.

The terraces stretched downward—

Layered.

Alive.

"…this is the trial?" he asked.

No answer.

Not from the wind.

Not from anyone.

That was new.

Footsteps approached.

Soft.

Measured.

Amir turned.

The same silent figure from the night before stood behind him.

Closer now.

Watching.

"…you're the observer," Amir said.

No reply.

Just a slight shift of stance.

Lower.

Grounded.

"…you don't talk much."

"…talking wastes time," the figure said.

Their voice was calm.

Younger than he expected.

"…good to know."

A pause.

"…follow," the observer said.

No explanation.

No hesitation.

Amir followed.

They moved through the terraces.

Not fast.

Not slow.

Precise.

Every step placed with intent.

Amir noticed it.

The way their feet met the ground—

Stable.

Rooted.

Never wasted.

"…you feel it?" the observer asked.

"…the ground?"

"…the imbalance."

Amir frowned.

"…yeah."

"…it's louder here."

The observer stopped.

Turned.

"…good."

They stepped aside.

Revealing a narrow stretch of terraced earth ahead.

Steep.

Uneven.

Mist-covered.

"…cross," the observer said.

Amir blinked.

"…that's it?"

"…without losing balance."

A pause.

"…without calling it."

Amir exhaled slowly.

"…of course."

He stepped forward.

The moment his foot touched the terrace—

The ground shifted.

Subtle.

But enough.

Amir adjusted—

Too late—

His footing slipped—

He caught himself—

Barely.

"…this isn't stable," he said.

"…it is," the observer replied.

"…you aren't."

Amir clicked his tongue.

"…right."

He took another step.

Slower.

More careful.

The ground responded.

Not resisting—

But not supporting either.

Neutral.

Unforgiving.

"…don't fight it," the Anito said quietly.

"…I'm not—"

"You are."

Amir paused.

Breathing steady.

"…then what do I do?"

"Stop forcing movement."

"…that again."

A step.

This time—

He didn't push forward.

He placed his foot.

Waited.

Let his weight settle.

The ground didn't shift.

"…good," the Anito said.

"…again."

Another step.

Then another.

Slow.

Controlled.

The mist thickened.

Vision narrowed.

The edges of the terrace blurred.

Amir stopped.

"…this is getting worse…"

"It's not."

"…what?"

"You're noticing more."

A sound broke through the mist.

Soft.

A whisper.

"…help…"

Amir froze.

"…that again…"

The voice came from the side.

"…over here…"

Amir turned—

Nothing.

"…it's not real," he muttered.

"No."

"…then why does it feel like it is?"

"Because you remember."

Amir's grip tightened.

The voice came again.

"…you're too late…"

His breath hitched.

"…focus," the Anito said.

"…yeah…"

He stepped forward.

Ignored it.

Another whisper—

Closer now—

"…you failed…"

Amir stopped.

Just for a second.

The ground shifted.

His foot slipped—

He dropped to one knee.

"…damn it…"

The observer's voice came—

Calm.

"…you fell."

Amir clenched his jaw.

"…not completely."

"…enough."

Silence.

"…again."

Amir looked up.

"…you're serious."

"…this is the trial."

Amir exhaled.

Then stood.

Returned to the start.

This time—

He didn't rush.

Didn't think about the end.

Just the step.

One.

Then another.

The whispers returned.

Louder.

Closer.

More familiar.

"…too slow…"

"…too weak…"

"…too late…"

Amir didn't turn.

Didn't react.

He stepped.

Steady.

Controlled.

The ground didn't shift.

Didn't resist.

It accepted.

"…that's it," the Anito said.

"…you're not forcing it anymore."

Amir exhaled slowly.

The mist thinned.

The path cleared.

And just like that—

He reached the end.

Silence.

Real silence this time.

Amir stood still.

Breathing steady.

"…that's it?" he asked.

The observer stepped forward.

"…no."

A pause.

"…now do it again."

Amir blinked.

"…you're kidding."

"…this time…"

The observer stepped onto the terrace.

Standing behind him.

Close.

"…with me."

The ground shifted.

Heavier.

More unstable.

Amir exhaled.

"…of course it does."

The observer's voice lowered.

"…if you can't stay balanced with another…"

A pause.

"…you won't survive what's coming."

Amir stepped forward.

Again.

But this time—

Not alone.
