The gunshots were so loud in that small space that the sound seemed to bounce off every wall at once.
Elena spun around with a scream already tearing out of her throat before she could stop it and then she froze.
The Two men were on the floor.
Alessandro was still standing.
He was panting, chest rising and falling hard, one hand braced against the elevator wall, and he was looking at her with that steady gaze even now, even in this moment, making sure she was okay before anything else.
"Alessandro." His name came out broken on her lips as she stepped toward him, her hands reaching out instinctively, and that was when she saw a dark stain spreading through his shirt just below his ribs.
Her breath left her completely as her lips began to quiver.
"Oh God." Her voice came out small. "You're shot." She almost whispered.
"I'm fine." He straightened up, jaw tight.
