The school felt louder than usual that day.
Or maybe Seo-yoon just noticed it more.
Everything seemed sharper. Voices, footsteps, laughter. Even the smallest sounds stood out in a way they hadn't before.
She sat by the window, her notebook open, her pen resting against the page without moving.
Hyun-woo was talking.
She was listening.
At least, she tried to.
"You're distracted," he said.
Seo-yoon blinked. "I'm not."
"You are."
"I'm just tired."
Hyun-woo studied her for a moment, then nodded. "Alright."
He didn't push.
He never did.
That made it easier.
And harder at the same time.
Class passed slowly.
Seo-yoon didn't look back.
Not once.
She told herself it didn't matter.
That she didn't need to.
That nothing would change if she did.
But the thought stayed.
Quiet.
Persistent.
At lunch, Min-chae didn't join her.
That was unusual.
Seo-yoon noticed immediately.
"Your friend isn't here today?" Hyun-woo asked.
"She will be," Seo-yoon said, though she wasn't sure.
But Min-chae didn't come.
Not during lunch.
Not after.
Seo-yoon saw her once in the hallway, talking to someone, but their eyes didn't meet.
Something about that felt intentional.
After school, Seo-yoon packed her bag slowly, like she always did now.
She didn't expect anything.
Didn't wait.
"Can we talk for a bit?" Hyun-woo asked.
She looked up. "Now?"
"Yeah."
Seo-yoon hesitated.
Then nodded. "Okay."
They walked out together, but instead of heading toward the gate, Hyun-woo turned toward the side of the building.
It was quieter there.
Less crowded.
The noise of the school faded into the background.
Seo-yoon stopped. "What is it?"
Hyun-woo didn't answer immediately.
He looked at her for a moment, like he was trying to decide how to say something.
Then he exhaled softly.
"I don't want this to sound sudden," he said.
Seo-yoon's grip tightened slightly around her bag.
"But I think it is anyway."
Her chest felt tight.
Something about his tone made it clear.
This wasn't about the project.
"I like you."
The words were simple.
Clear.
Unavoidable.
Seo-yoon didn't react immediately.
Not because she didn't hear him.
But because she didn't know how to respond.
"I know we haven't known each other that long," Hyun-woo continued. "But I enjoy being around you. Talking to you. It's easy."
Seo-yoon looked at him.
He wasn't nervous.
Just honest.
"I don't expect an answer right away," he added. "I just didn't want to keep it to myself."
Silence settled between them.
Seo-yoon's thoughts felt scattered.
Unorganized.
Too loud.
"I…" she started.
Then stopped.
Because there was only one thing she was sure of.
And it wasn't him.
"I don't know," she said quietly.
Hyun-woo nodded.
"I figured," he said.
There was no disappointment in his voice.
Just understanding.
"You can take your time."
Seo-yoon nodded slowly. "Okay."
They stood there for a moment longer.
Then Hyun-woo stepped back slightly.
"I'll walk you to the gate," he said.
Seo-yoon hesitated.
Then shook her head. "It's okay. I'll go."
He looked at her, then nodded. "Alright."
"Thank you," she added softly.
"For what?"
"For telling me."
Hyun-woo smiled faintly. "You're welcome."
Seo-yoon turned and walked away.
Her steps were slower than usual.
Her thoughts heavier.
Everything felt different.
The air.
The space.
Even the sound of her own footsteps.
When she reached the front of the school, she stopped.
Not because she meant to.
But because someone was there.
Ji-hoon.
He stood near the gate, his hands in his pockets, his expression unreadable.
He had been waiting.
Not at the corner.
Here.
Seo-yoon's breath caught slightly.
For a moment, neither of them moved.
Neither of them spoke.
Then Ji-hoon took a step forward.
"Were you busy?" he asked.
His voice was calm.
Too calm.
Seo-yoon nodded. "A little."
He glanced past her, toward the side of the building.
Like he already knew.
Like he had seen.
Then he looked back at her.
"Let's go," he said.
Seo-yoon hesitated.
Just for a second.
Then she nodded.
They started walking.
Side by side.
Like before.
Like always.
But this time
It didn't feel the same.
The silence between them wasn't familiar.
It was heavy.
Full.
Waiting.
Seo-yoon glanced at him.
"Ji-hoon…"
He didn't look at her. "What?"
She hesitated.
Should she tell him?
Should she say it?
That someone else had confessed.
That everything had changed.
"I…" she started.
Then stopped.
Because she didn't know what it would change.
Because she didn't know what she wanted him to say.
"Nothing," she said quietly.
Ji-hoon nodded.
"Okay."
They kept walking.
Neither of them spoke again.
But the silence said enough.
Because this time
There was something between them
That had never been there before.
Not just distance.
Not just confusion.
But something real.
Something neither of them had said out loud.
And something that was no longer easy to ignore.
