Chapter 16 - Chapter 15: Why Are You Like This

The silence didn't end the next day.

It followed them.

From the walk.

To the classroom.

Into every space they shared.

Seo-yoon felt it the moment she saw him.

Ji-hoon was already seated at the back again, his attention fixed on his notebook. He didn't look up when she entered. He didn't acknowledge her presence the way he used to.

Like it didn't matter.

Like she didn't matter.

She tightened her grip on her bag strap and walked to her seat.

Hyun-woo was already there.

"Morning," he said.

"Morning," she replied.

Her voice sounded normal.

But nothing felt normal.

She sat down, her movements slower than usual.

Her eyes flickered, just for a second.

Toward the back.

Ji-hoon didn't look up.

Not even once.

Something inside her shifted.

Sharp.

Uncomfortable.

Class began.

Hyun-woo spoke to her quietly, pointing at her notes, explaining something she hadn't fully understood. She nodded, responded when needed, but her attention kept slipping.

Again and again.

To the same place.

To him.

But Ji-hoon stayed the same.

Quiet.

Focused.

Distant.

Like none of this affected him.

Like nothing had changed.

That bothered her more than anything else.

By lunch, the feeling hadn't faded.

If anything, it had grown stronger.

Min-chae sat down beside her this time, her expression serious for once.

"You look worse," she said.

"I'm fine."

"You're not."

Seo-yoon didn't argue.

She didn't have the energy.

Min-chae leaned closer. "Did something happen yesterday?"

Seo-yoon hesitated.

Then, quietly, "He confessed."

Min-chae blinked. "Hyun-woo?"

Seo-yoon nodded.

"And?"

"I didn't answer."

Min-chae leaned back slightly, processing.

"Okay," she said slowly. "And Ji-hoon knows?"

"No."

"Are you going to tell him?"

Seo-yoon looked down. "I tried."

"And?"

"I couldn't."

Min-chae watched her carefully. "Why?"

Seo-yoon didn't answer.

Because she didn't know.

Or maybe she did.

And didn't want to say it out loud.

Across the cafeteria, Ji-hoon sat alone again.

Not with them.

Not with anyone.

Just there.

Seo-yoon noticed.

Of course she did.

She always did.

And this time

She was tired of it.

Tired of the silence.

Tired of pretending nothing was wrong.

Tired of him acting like it didn't matter.

She stood up suddenly.

Min-chae blinked. "Where are you going?"

"I don't know," Seo-yoon said.

But she did.

She walked across the cafeteria.

Straight to him.

Ji-hoon looked up when she stopped in front of his table.

For a moment, he seemed surprised.

Just slightly.

"What?" he asked.

Seo-yoon stared at him.

Her chest felt tight.

Her thoughts rushed all at once.

Everything she hadn't said.

Everything she had held back.

"Why are you like this?" she asked.

Ji-hoon frowned slightly. "Like what?"

"Like nothing matters," she said. "Like I don't matter."

His expression didn't change.

"That's not what I said."

"You didn't say anything," she replied. "That's the problem."

Ji-hoon looked at her, his gaze steady.

"What do you want me to say?"

"I don't know," Seo-yoon admitted. "Something."

"About what?"

She hesitated.

For a second, everything stopped.

Then she said it.

"He confessed."

Ji-hoon's eyes flickered.

Just slightly.

But she saw it.

"Hyun-woo," she added, even though she didn't need to.

Silence.

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

Then Ji-hoon nodded once.

"Okay."

That was it.

Just one word.

Seo-yoon felt something inside her drop.

"That's all?" she asked.

"What else do you want me to say?"

"I don't know," she repeated. "Anything."

Ji-hoon looked away briefly, then back at her.

"It's your decision."

Seo-yoon stared at him.

Her chest tightened.

"That's it?" she said again.

"Yes."

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

Like it didn't affect him at all.

Seo-yoon took a step back.

Her hands clenched slightly at her sides.

"Fine," she said quietly.

She turned.

And walked away.

Back to her table.

Back to Min-chae.

Back to everything that suddenly felt heavier than before.

Min-chae looked at her carefully. "What happened?"

Seo-yoon sat down.

"He said it's my decision."

Min-chae frowned. "That's it?"

"That's it."

Min-chae glanced toward Ji-hoon, then back at her.

"He's an idiot," she muttered.

Seo-yoon didn't respond.

She didn't know what to feel.

Angry.

Hurt.

Confused.

All of it at once.

Across the cafeteria, Ji-hoon sat still.

Exactly where she had left him.

He hadn't moved.

Hadn't spoken.

Hadn't reacted.

But his grip on his fork had tightened.

His jaw clenched slightly.

He looked down at his tray.

Then away.

Because if he looked up

If he let himself react

If he said what he actually wanted to say

It wouldn't stop at one word.

And that was exactly what he was trying to avoid.

Because once he crossed that line

There would be no going back.

And for now

He chose not to.
