We didn't stop running.
Not when we reached the stairs.
Not when we pushed through the back exit.
Not even when the noise of the school disappeared behind us.
Only when we hit the street—
Breathless.
Desperate.
Broken.
"That way!" Noah pointed.
We ran again.
Across the street.
Through a narrow alley.
My lungs burned.
My legs felt heavy.
But stopping wasn't an option.
"They're still behind us?" Emily asked, struggling to keep up.
I looked back.
Nothing.
No movement.
No footsteps.
No shadows.
"They're not there…" I said.
Silence.
But that didn't feel like relief.
It felt worse.
"They wouldn't just stop," Ryan said.
He was right.
"They know where we are," Noah added.
"And who we are," Emily whispered.
That hit harder than anything.
Because now…
This wasn't just random.
This was targeted.
"They came for the drive," I said.
"And for you," he added.
I looked at him.
"What did you get us into?"
A pause.
Then—
"The truth."
I clenched my jaw.
"That's not enough anymore."
"No," he agreed quietly.
"It's not."
Silence fell again.
Heavy.
Uncertain.
"What do we do now?" Emily asked.
That question…
No one wanted to answer.
Because the truth was—
We had no plan.
No safety.
No control.
"They'll come after our families," Noah said suddenly.
Everything stopped.
A cold wave ran through all of us.
"No…" Emily whispered.
"Yes," I said.
Because it made sense.
Too much sense.
"If this is about them…" I continued
"…then we're not the only targets."
Ryan looked at me.
"They won't touch them."
That confidence…
It didn't feel right.
"How do you know?" I asked.
Silence.
Then—
"Because they're part of it."
That hit hard.
Too hard.
"What?" Emily said.
"You saw the names," Ryan continued.
"You saw the connections."
My chest tightened.
"That doesn't mean they're safe."
"It means they're protected."
"No," I shook my head.
"It means they're involved."
Silence.
Because that was the truth.
The ugly one.
"We can't go home," Noah said.
No one argued.
Because we all knew—
Home wasn't safe anymore.
"So where do we go?" Emily asked.
A pause.
Then—
"All of this started with them," I said.
Everyone looked at me.
"Our families," I continued.
"The meetings. The secrets."
My heart started racing again.
"So we go to the source."
Noah frowned.
"What does that mean?"
I hesitated.
Because even saying it felt dangerous.
"We confront them."
Silence.
Heavy.
Impossible.
"Are you serious?" Emily asked.
"After everything we just saw?"
"They tried to stop us," I said.
"That means we're close."
"Or it means we're dead if we keep going," Noah replied.
"Then what's your plan?" I snapped.
"Run forever?"
No answer.
Because there wasn't one.
"There's no safe way out of this," I continued.
Silence.
"We either face it…"
I looked at all of them.
"…or we let it destroy us one by one."
The words hung in the air.
Heavy.
Real.
Emily wiped her tears.
"I don't want to run anymore," she said quietly.
Noah exhaled.
"Yeah…" he muttered.
"Me neither."
All eyes turned to Ryan.
He stayed silent for a moment.
Then—
"…fine."
One word.
But it changed everything.
"Then we do it together," he added.
That felt strange.
Wrong.
But also…
Necessary.
"Where do we start?" Noah asked.
I already knew.
"My father."
Silence.
Because that wasn't just a step.
That was a line.
And once we crossed it—
There would be no going back.
But before anyone could say anything—
A sound.
Loud.
Sharp.
Close.
A car screeched at the end of the alley.
We all turned.
Black car.
Windows tinted.
Engine still running.
My chest tightened instantly.
"They found us," Emily whispered.
The door opened.
Slowly.
Someone stepped out.
Not one of the men from before.
Someone else.
Older.
Calm.
Controlled.
And when he looked at me—
My blood ran cold.
Because I knew that face.
I had seen it before.
On the screen.
In the meeting.
With my father.
"Lucas," he said.
My heart stopped.
"We need to talk."
Silence.
Because something told me—
This wasn't a choice.
🖤 Poem — Lucas
I ran from shadows
I couldn't see
but they knew my name
they followed me
and now I stand
with no way back
face to face…
with the truth I lack
