No one spoke.
Not because they didn't want to.
But because something had shifted.
Something irreversible.
Lucas could feel it in the way the air pressed against his chest, in the way no one looked at him the same anymore—not even Emily.
Especially not Emily.
He didn't blame her.
He barely recognized himself.
— "You went back…"
The words still echoed, even though no one had repeated them.
Because they didn't need to.
They were already real.
Lucas swallowed hard, his throat dry.
— "I told you… I just wanted to check," he said, but now it sounded like he was trying to convince himself more than anyone else.
— "You always say that," the man replied quietly.
Lucas looked up.
— "Say what?"
— "That you didn't mean for things to go that far."
Silence.
That hit deeper than anything else so far.
Because it wasn't just about that night.
It felt older.
Bigger.
— "Stop acting like you know me," Lucas snapped.
— "I don't need to act."
A pause.
— "I watched you."
The room went still.
Noah frowned.
— "You're insane."
— "No," the man said calmly. "I paid attention."
Lucas clenched his jaw.
— "Then tell me what I saw."
That was it.
The question.
The one thing that mattered now.
Because everything else—
The fight.
The video.
The lies.
None of it explained the gap.
The missing piece.
The reason he walked away.
The man tilted his head slightly.
Studying him.
— "You really don't remember…"
Lucas didn't answer.
Because now…
He wasn't sure if he wanted to.
— "Fine," the man continued. "Let's make it easier."
He took a slow step closer.
— "You went back."
Lucas didn't react this time.
— "You saw him."
A pause.
— "Alive."
Lucas's fingers tightened.
— "You hesitated."
Silence.
— "And then…"
Another step.
Closer.
— "You looked up."
That was new.
Lucas frowned.
— "What?"
— "You weren't looking at him anymore."
Something twisted inside his chest.
— "That doesn't make sense."
— "It does," the man said. "Because that's when you saw it."
Lucas felt his pulse spike.
— "Saw what?"
The man didn't answer right away.
Instead, he looked at Ryan.
Then at Emily.
Then back at Lucas.
— "You weren't alone."
The words landed heavier than anything else.
— "That's not possible," Lucas said immediately.
— "It is."
— "No. If someone else was there, we would've known."
— "Would you?" the man asked.
Silence.
Lucas opened his mouth—
Then stopped.
Because the truth was…
He didn't know.
— "Think," the man said, softer now. "Not about what you remember… but about what doesn't fit."
Lucas closed his eyes for a second.
Just one.
And then—
It came back.
Not clear.
Not complete.
But enough.
The rain.
Still falling.
His breathing.
Too loud.
Too fast.
The body on the ground.
Barely moving.
And then—
A sound.
Not from him.
Not from the others.
Something else.
Lucas's eyes snapped open.
— "There was someone…"
The words came out before he could stop them.
Emily's head turned sharply.
— "What?"
— "I heard something," Lucas said. "Not him. Not us."
Noah shook his head.
— "No. That's not real."
— "It is," Lucas insisted. "I remember turning—"
— "And seeing nothing?" Noah cut in.
Lucas hesitated.
Because that's what he remembered.
Or…
What he told himself he remembered.
— "No," Lucas said slowly.
The word surprised even him.
— "I didn't see nothing."
Silence.
Heavy.
— "Then what did you see?" Emily asked.
Lucas didn't answer right away.
Because now—
The image was forming.
Piece by piece.
— "A shadow," he said.
The room didn't move.
Didn't breathe.
— "Behind the trees."
Noah laughed nervously.
— "That could be anything."
— "It wasn't," Lucas said.
— "How do you know?"
Lucas looked at him.
And for the first time—
There was certainty.
— "Because it moved."
Silence.
— "Toward him."
Emily's hand slowly rose to her mouth.
— "No…"
— "I thought it was one of you," Lucas continued. "That's why I didn't react right away."
Ryan stepped forward.
— "It wasn't me."
— "I know that now," Lucas said.
The man watched, satisfied.
— "And that's when you left," he added.
Lucas nodded slowly.
— "Yeah…"
A pause.
— "Not because of what I did."
Another breath.
— "But because of what I thought I saw."
— "You didn't think," the man corrected.
Lucas looked at him.
— "You knew."
That word hit harder.
— "No…"
— "You knew you weren't alone."
Silence.
Lucas felt it now.
The fear.
The real one.
Not guilt.
Not regret.
Something else.
— "If someone else was there…" Noah said slowly, "then why didn't they show up after?"
The man smiled slightly.
— "Who says they didn't?"
The room went cold.
— "What?" Emily whispered.
— "You've all been so focused on me…"
A pause.
— "You never stopped to ask if I was the only one watching."
Lucas felt his chest tighten.
— "You're lying."
— "Am I?"
Silence.
And this time…
No one rushed to deny it.
Because now—
There was a new possibility.
Worse than the last.
This wasn't just about revenge.
Or guilt.
Or one person coming back.
It was bigger.
And none of them knew where it ended.
🖤 Poem — Lucas
I thought I saw shadows
and turned away fast
but fear isn't nothing
it's tied to the past
and the thing I avoided…
might still last
