Chapter 44 - The Part I Buried

"No."

Lucas didn't even realize he had spoken out loud.

But the words came out firm.

Instinctive.

As if it were the only thing holding everything together.

— "That's not true."

No one corrected him.

Not even the man.

That was worse.

Because instead of arguing…

He just watched.

Like he was waiting.

For something to surface on its own.

Lucas felt it.

Not as a memory.

But as pressure.

Something pushing from inside.

— "You're lying," he said again, but this time… slower.

Less certain.

— "Maybe," the man replied calmly.

A pause.

— "Or maybe you are."

Silence.

Emily shook her head.

— "Stop this. He left with us. I remember that."

Lucas turned to her.

Quick.

— "Do you?"

She froze.

— "What?"

— "Do you actually remember me walking away… or do you remember us leaving?"

The difference hit.

Hard.

She opened her mouth—

Closed it.

Because she couldn't answer cleanly.

Noah looked between them.

— "This is messed up."

— "No," the man said quietly.

— "This is clarity."

Lucas pressed his hand against his forehead.

Something wasn't right.

The images in his head—

They weren't complete anymore.

They were shifting.

Breaking.

Rebuilding.

— "I remember the rain," he said slowly.

No one interrupted.

— "I remember shouting…"

A breath.

— "I remember him on the ground."

That part stayed.

Clear.

Unchanged.

But after that—

Everything blurred.

— "And then we left," Lucas said.

— "Did you?" the man asked.

Lucas's jaw tightened.

— "Yes."

— "Then why do you remember turning around?"

The world stopped.

Lucas blinked.

— "I didn't."

— "You did."

— "No."

— "Then why did your hand stop?"

Silence.

Lucas felt something twist inside his chest.

— "What are you talking about?"

The man didn't rush.

Didn't push.

He just said:

— "You were walking."

A pause.

— "And then you stopped."

Lucas's breathing slowed.

Not by choice.

By force.

Because something…

Was coming back.

— "No…"

— "You heard something."

The room disappeared.

Not physically.

But in Lucas's mind—

Everything shifted.

Rain.

Louder.

Colder.

Footsteps.

Fast.

Then slowing.

— "Lucas—come on!" Noah's voice echoed.

— "We need to go!" Emily.

— "Leave it!" Ryan.

Lucas's hand twitched.

— "You stopped," the man repeated softly.

Lucas's fingers curled slightly.

— "I didn't—"

— "You did."

A flash.

A sound.

Not loud.

Not dramatic.

Just—

Movement.

Behind him.

Lucas's eyes widened slightly.

— "No…"

— "You turned around."

The memory hit harder this time.

Sharper.

Clearer.

He saw it.

Himself.

Turning.

Just for a second.

— "Why would I do that?" Lucas whispered.

The man stepped closer.

— "Because you heard him."

Silence.

— "He wasn't unconscious anymore."

The air froze.

— "That's not—"

— "He moved."

Lucas's chest tightened.

— "He called your name."

And there it was.

The missing piece.

The thing that never fit.

The thing his mind had buried.

— "Lucas…"

The voice.

Weak.

Broken.

But real.

Lucas's body stiffened.

— "No…"

— "You heard him," the man said.

— "No," Lucas repeated, but now it sounded different.

— "And you went back."

Everything stopped.

Emily shook her head.

— "No, he didn't—"

— "He did."

Lucas wasn't listening anymore.

Because now—

He could see it.

Clear.

Himself.

Walking back.

Slowly.

Hesitating.

But going.

— "I just wanted to check…" Lucas whispered.

The words came out on their own.

No one reacted.

Because now—

They were listening.

— "He was alive…" Lucas continued, his voice distant. "He was trying to breathe…"

Emily covered her mouth.

Noah didn't move.

Ryan stared.

— "And you didn't help him," the man said quietly.

Lucas's head snapped up.

— "I was going to!"

— "But you didn't."

Silence.

Lucas's hands trembled.

— "I… I was going to—"

— "You hesitated."

That word again.

— "And then what?" Noah asked, low.

Lucas shook his head.

— "I don't know…"

— "Yes, you do."

— "I DON'T!"

The shout echoed.

Raw.

Real.

And for the first time—

It wasn't anger.

It was fear.

The man didn't react.

He just said:

— "You saw something."

Lucas froze.

— "What?"

A pause.

— "That's why you left."

The air shifted again.

— "No…"

— "You didn't run because you were scared of what you did."

Silence.

— "You ran because of what you saw."

Lucas's heart was racing now.

— "What did I see?"

The man looked at him.

Long.

Deep.

And then—

— "That's the part you're still hiding."

The room fell into silence.

Heavy.

Unstable.

Because now—

The truth wasn't just incomplete.

It was worse.

It was selective.

And Lucas…

Was the one selecting it.
