Chapter 3 - A Name in the Rain

The silence between them stretched like glass—thin, sharp, and ready to shatter.

Elara stood motionless, the streetlight behind her throwing a faint halo around her dark hair. The stranger's eyes caught the glow, steady and unreadable.

"Who are you?" she demanded.

"Damian," he said simply. "Damian Cole."

The name meant nothing to her, but the way he said it—low, unafraid—made something twist in her chest.

"You've been following me," she said. "Why?"

He took a step forward. "Because you don't hide your ghosts well."

Her grip tightened on the knife in her pocket.

"You think I'm one of them?" she asked.

"No," he said. "You're something worse—for them. For men like them."

His voice carried a strange kind of admiration, and that frightened her more than any weapon could.

They stood under the rain, two strangers bound by secrets.

Finally, Elara turned away. "If you're smart, you'll forget you saw me."

"I can't," Damian said. "I think you're doing what the world refuses to do."

Her jaw clenched. "Justice isn't supposed to bleed."

"But it always does," he replied.

The words hit her harder than she wanted to admit.

She walked away without another word, but Damian didn't follow. Not that night. He knew she'd let him find her again when she wanted to.

And she did.

Two nights later, he came home to find a small red envelope on his doorstep.

Inside was a photo—black and white, taken from an alley—and on the back, written in lipstick:

"Stop following me. Or help me."

His heart pounded. It wasn't a threat. It was an invitation.

Damian sat on the floor, the letter trembling in his hands. For the first time in years, he felt alive.

He grabbed his jacket and camera, and went looking for her.

Elara watched from her rooftop, cigarette glowing between her fingers. She saw him step into the street, looking for her shadow.

"Curiosity will kill you," she whispered.

But there was a small smile on her lips—sad, dangerous, almost tender.

Because for the first time since her pain began, someone wasn't running from her darkness.
