Chapter 14 - CHAPTER 14: Small Steps

The morning sunlight spilled into Seoul Station again. Kim So Hee, 28, adjusted her uniform and straightened her badge. The hum of activity around her was comforting—a rhythm she had grown used to. She had learned to find calm amidst chaos, a skill honed over years as a lieutenant.

Her gaze landed on Ahn Soo Bin entering with her usual bright smile. The girl's energy was contagious, as always, but today So Hee noticed something different: a quiet determination beneath her usual cheerfulness.

"Good morning," So Hee said calmly.

"Morning, ma'am!" Soo Bin replied, practically bouncing as she approached. "Ready to start the day?"

So Hee allowed herself a small smile. "Yes. Let's keep it simple today. We'll check on neighborhood patrol updates and follow up on minor reports. Nothing hectic."

They began by visiting a local community center where a complaint about a missing delivery had come in. Soo Bin immediately jumped into action, talking to the staff, asking questions, and organizing the details with her usual energy. So Hee followed calmly, taking notes and observing.

Soo Bin's extroversion was bright and lively—she had a way of making people comfortable, even when explaining details multiple times. So Hee, watching quietly, felt a small warmth. The girl's enthusiasm was harmless, yet effective.

At one point, Soo Bin accidentally knocked over a stack of pamphlets. She laughed, flustered, and So Hee smirked slightly, helping her pick them up.

"You're lucky your smile makes up for your clumsiness," So Hee teased softly.

Soo Bin laughed, cheeks flushing slightly. "I'll remember that, ma'am."

The day continued with a few more minor follow-ups—lost pets, misplaced packages, small disputes between neighbors. Each time, Soo Bin's energy and So Hee's calmness balanced perfectly. By the end of the day, So Hee realized that mentoring this intern was becoming something she genuinely looked forward to.
