Chapter 22 - CHAPTER 22: Unspoken Lines

The afternoon at the station carried a calm rhythm, the kind that made time feel slower, almost gentle. Papers shuffled, quiet conversations filled the air, and the soft hum of routine work created a sense of normalcy.

Ahn Soo Bin sat at her desk, flipping through her notebook, though her eyes weren't really focused on the words.

She was thinking.

Again.

Her pen hovered over the page as she absentmindedly tapped it against the margin, her thoughts drifting somewhere far from reports and assignments.

Without meaning to, her gaze shifted.

Kim So Hee stood a few steps away, speaking to another officer, her posture straight, her tone calm and composed. There was something about the way she carried herself—effortless, steady—that always drew Soo Bin in.

Soo Bin quickly looked back down at her notebook.

Focus.

But it was useless.

Her chest tightened slightly, a familiar feeling she had come to recognize—but not fully accept.

I like her.

The thought came quietly, but it didn't surprise her anymore.

She had known for a while now.

It wasn't just admiration. It wasn't just respect. It wasn't just a sunbae-noonbae bond.

It was something deeper.

Something that made her notice every little thing.

The way So Hee spoke.

The way she smiled—rare, but real.

The way her voice softened just slightly when she gave guidance.

Soo Bin pressed her lips together.

But… what if she doesn't feel the same?

That thought always followed.

And it was enough to stop her every time.

"Soo Bin."

Her head snapped up.

So Hee was standing in front of her now, holding a file.

"Yes, ma'am!" Soo Bin replied quickly, straightening in her seat.

"Come with me," So Hee said. "We need to follow up on a small report."

Soo Bin grabbed her notebook immediately, her usual energy returning. "Right away!"

They stepped outside together, the cool air brushing gently against their skin.

"It's a simple case," So Hee explained as they walked. "A small shop reported missing inventory. We're just verifying details."

"Got it," Soo Bin nodded. "I'll handle the questioning."

So Hee glanced at her briefly. "Don't rush. Listen first."

Soo Bin grinned. "Yes, ma'am."

At the shop, Soo Bin naturally took the lead, greeting the owner with a bright smile and asking questions with her usual warmth. Her voice was lively, her gestures expressive, and within minutes, the owner had relaxed completely.

So Hee stood slightly behind, observing.

She didn't interrupt.

She didn't need to.

Soo Bin handled everything smoothly—asking the right questions, noticing small inconsistencies, even calming the owner when he became frustrated.

A small smile appeared on So Hee's lips.

She's really grown.

"Thank you so much!" Soo Bin said as they wrapped up. "We'll follow up again if needed."

As they stepped out of the shop, Soo Bin turned toward So Hee, her eyes bright.

"How was that? Did I do okay?"

So Hee met her gaze.

For a second—just a second—she hesitated.

Then she spoke.

"You did well."

Simple.

But sincere.

Soo Bin's face lit up instantly. "Really?"

So Hee nodded. "You listened. You didn't rush. That's important."

Soo Bin let out a small laugh, rubbing the back of her neck. "I was trying really hard not to talk too much."

"That's progress," So Hee said, a hint of amusement in her voice.

Their eyes met again.

And this time… neither of them looked away immediately.

There was something soft in the air.

Something quiet.

Something unspoken.

"Hey, Soo Bin!"

A voice called out from across the street.

Soo Bin turned.

"Won Young?"

Lim Won Young walked toward them, her expression calm but warm. She was dressed neatly, holding a small bag in her hand.

"I was nearby," she said. "Thought I might see you."

Soo Bin smiled. "You've been showing up a lot lately."

"Is that a problem?" Won Young asked lightly.

"No! Not at all," Soo Bin laughed. "It's just surprising."

Won Young's gaze briefly shifted to So Hee.

They exchanged a polite nod.

"Lieutenant Kim," Won Young said.

"Intern Lim," So Hee replied calmly.

There was a brief pause.

Then Won Young turned back to Soo Bin. "Have you eaten?"

Soo Bin blinked. "Not yet."

"Then come with me," Won Young said gently. "I brought something."

She lifted the bag slightly.

Soo Bin hesitated.

Her instinct was to say yes—she always enjoyed spending time with Won Young. It was easy, comfortable.

But…

She glanced at So Hee.

Just for a moment.

So Hee didn't say anything.

Her expression was calm.

Neutral.

Unreadable.

"It's fine," So Hee said after a second. "You can go. I'll head back first."

Soo Bin quickly shook her head. "No, I can—"

"It's okay," So Hee repeated. "You've done enough for today."

Her tone was gentle, but firm.

Soo Bin hesitated again… then nodded slowly.

"Okay… I'll come back soon."

As Soo Bin walked away with Won Young, she felt a strange mix of emotions.

She was happy.

But also…

A little uneasy.

She glanced back.

So Hee was already walking in the opposite direction.

Not looking back.

"You seem distracted," Won Young said quietly as they sat on a nearby bench.

Soo Bin blinked. "Do I?"

"A little."

Soo Bin laughed it off. "Just tired, I guess."

Won Young studied her for a moment, then opened the bag.

"I brought your favorite," she said, handing her a container.

Soo Bin's eyes lit up. "You remembered?"

"Of course."

Soo Bin smiled, genuinely touched. "Thank you."

They ate together quietly for a while.

It was peaceful.

Comfortable.

But something felt… off.

Soo Bin found herself thinking about the way So Hee had said "You did well."

The way her voice had softened.

The way her eyes had looked at her.

She shook her head slightly.

Why am I thinking about her right now…?

"Soo Bin," Won Young said softly.

"Hm?"

"I enjoy spending time with you."

Soo Bin paused.

There it was again.

That tone.

That meaning beneath the words.

She felt it clearly now.

And it made her chest tighten.

Won Young looked at her gently. "I was thinking… maybe we could spend more time together. Not just like this. Something more… intentional."

Soo Bin's grip tightened slightly on her food container.

Her heart beat a little faster.

But not in the way it should.

Her thoughts drifted again.

To someone else.

To calm eyes.

To quiet smiles.

To a voice that said "You did well."

"I…" Soo Bin hesitated.

She didn't want to hurt Won Young.

But she couldn't lie either.

Not to herself.

Not anymore.

"I like spending time with you," she said carefully.

Won Young's expression softened slightly.

But Soo Bin continued.

"But… I don't think I can… feel more than that."

There was a pause.

A quiet one.

Heavy, but not harsh.

Won Young looked down briefly, then back up.

"I see."

Her voice was calm.

But there was disappointment in it.

Soo Bin felt guilty.

"I'm sorry… I just—"

"It's okay," Won Young said gently. "You don't have to explain."

She gave a small smile.

"Feelings aren't something you can force."

Soo Bin nodded slowly.

Relief and guilt mixed together in her chest.

But deep down…

There was also clarity.

And for the first time…

She stopped running from it.

Her feelings had a name now.

A direction.

A person.

And that person…

Was Kim So Hee.
