Chapter 12 - THE VISITORS

The dream came again that night.

Derek's face, twisted with rage. His hands around my throat. The feeling of drowning, of dying, of being nothing.

I woke gasping, heart pounding, drenched in sweat.

Kael was already there. Already holding me.

"Shh. I'm here. You're safe." His arms wrapped around me, pulling me against his chest. "Just a dream. Just a memory. It can't hurt you anymore."

I clung to him, breathing in his scent pine and smoke and home.

"I'm sorry," I whispered. "I thought I was past this."

"Trauma doesn't work that way." He kissed my hair. "It fades, but it never fully disappears. You learn to live with it. You learn to let me help."

"I don't want to need help."

"Too bad." He pulled back, looked at me. "You're mine now. My mate. My responsibility. My privilege. You don't get to suffer alone anymore."

I stared at him. At this impossible man who kept saying impossible things.

"I love you," I whispered.

"I love you too. Now try to sleep. I'll keep the nightmares away."

I closed my eyes. With his arms around me and the bond humming softly, I finally drifted off.

The visitors arrived at dawn.

I felt them before Kael did a ripple through the pack bond, alert and wary. Then Kael was awake, rigid, reaching for weapons.

"What is it?"

"Wolves at the border. Strangers." He was already dressed. "Stay here."

"Like hell."

He looked at me. For a moment, I thought he'd argue. Then he nodded.

"Stay close to me. Don't speak unless I say it's safe."

We dressed quickly and headed for the border.

They were impressive.

A dozen wolves in human form, led by a man who radiated power. Tall as Kael, broader, with eyes the color of storm clouds. His hair was dark, his jaw sharp, his smile easy but dangerous.

He stood at the border, hands raised in peace.

"Alpha Kael." His voice was deep, smooth. "I come in peace. I bring greetings from the Shadowfang Pack."

Kael's hand found my lower back. Protective. Possessive.

"Alpha Torin. To what do I owe the pleasure?"

"Business, I'm afraid." Torin's gaze moved past Kael. Found me. Lingered.

I felt Kael's rage through the bond hot and immediate.

"Your eyes are on my Luna," Kael growled. "Remove them."

Torin's smile widened. He looked at Kael, unabashed.

"My apologies. I'd heard you'd found your mate. I didn't realize she was ...." He paused. "Human."

"None of your business."

"True." Torin inclined his head. "But beautiful. Rare. You're a lucky wolf."

Kael's arm tightened around me. Through the bond, I felt his struggle. kill him or hear him out.

"State your business," Kael repeated. "Quickly."

Torin outlined the problem.

Poachers on the border between their territories. Humans with advanced weapons, killing wolves for sport. His pack had lost three members in the last month.

"We need allies," Torin said. "Your pack, mine. Shared patrols. Shared resources. Shared intelligence."

Kael was quiet for a long moment.

"Why should I trust you?"

"Because I'm asking for help, not giving orders." Torin met his eyes. "Because my wolves are dying, and I'll do anything to stop it. Because. " He glanced at me again, quickly, respectfully. "Because I know what it's like to have something worth protecting."

Kael studied him.

"I'll consider it. Leave your proposal with my second. I'll give you an answer by the full moon."

Torin nodded. "Fair enough."

He turned to go.

"Torin."

He paused.

"If you look at my Luna again. if you speak of her again I'll tear out your throat myself."

Torin smiled. Not mocking. Respectful.

"Noted."

He disappeared into the forest.

The rest of the day was tense.

Kael met with Jax. Sent wolves to Shadowfang territory to gather information. Patrolled the borders himself, twice.

I felt his worry through the bond constant, gnawing.

That night, he finally came to bed.

"Talk to me."

He was quiet for a long moment.

"Torin is dangerous. His pack is dangerous. They've been pushing borders for years, testing strengths, looking for weakness." He looked at me. "And now he's seen you."

"What does that mean?"

"It means you're a target. Human mates are rare. Valuable. Some wolves …" His jaw tightened. "Some wolves would kill to have one."

I felt cold.

"Kael"

"I won't let him touch you." His voice was fierce. "I'll kill him first. I'll kill every wolf in his pack. I'll burn their territory to ash."

"Kael." I touched his face. "I'm not going anywhere."

He pulled me close. Held me tight.

"I know. But knowing and fearing are different." He kissed my hair. "I'll protect you. Always."

"I know."

---

He made love to me that night like he was claiming me all over again.

Desperate. Urgent. Every touch a reminder that I was his, that he was mine, that nothing would change that.

Afterward, I lay in his arms, tracing patterns on his chest.

"What if the alliance is real? What if he's telling the truth?"

"Then we help them. We protect our borders together." He kissed my forehead. "But trust takes time. I need to be sure."

"And me?"

He looked at me. "What about you?"

"Do you trust me to handle myself? To be strong enough?"

His eyes softened.

"I trust you completely. You're the strongest person I know." He pulled me closer. "But that doesn't mean I stop protecting you. That's not how this works."

"How does it work?"

"We protect each other." He kissed me. "You're my strength. I'm yours. Together, we're unstoppable."

I smiled. "That's cheesy."

"It's true."

"Also cheesy."

He laughed. Pulled me on top of him.

"Shut up and kiss me."

He draws me gently onto his lap, his strong hands cradling my hips with a tenderness that belies his Alpha strength, guiding me to straddle him in the soft embrace of the sheets. The moonlight spills across us like liquid silver, illuminating the planes of his face those golden eyes soft with adoration, his lips curved in a quiet smile that makes my heart flutter. Our bodies align perfectly, the warmth of his skin against mine a soothing promise, his arousal a gentle press against my most intimate place, stirring a slow, blooming heat within me.

"Come here, my love," he murmurs, his voice a low, velvety whisper that wraps around my soul like the mate bond itself, drawing me closer without demand. "Kiss me."

I lean in, our lips meeting in a kiss as soft as the first snowfall..unhurried, exploring. His mouth moves against mine with reverent slowness, his tongue tracing the seam of my lips before delving deeper, tasting me with a sweetness that speaks of endless devotion. I melt into it, my fingers weaving through his dark waves, holding him close as if we have all the time in the world. The world narrows to this: the faint salt of his skin, the rhythmic rise and fall of his chest syncing with mine, the way his breath mingles with my sighs in the quiet night.

Kael's hands glide up my sides, palms warm and sure, tracing the curve of my waist, the swell of my breasts, with a touch that worships rather than claims. He cups one gently, his thumb brushing over the peaked nipple in lazy circles, sending ripples of warmth cascading through me. I arch into his hand, a soft gasp escaping as pleasure unfurls like petals in the sun….subtle, building, intimate. Our eyes meet when I pull back slightly, his gaze holding mine, reflecting the depth of our connection, the bond humming softly between us, weaving our emotions into a tapestry of shared longing and love.

"You're so beautiful, Elena," he breathes, his words a caress as his hand drifts lower, fingers parting my folds with exquisite care. He circles that sensitive bud at my core, slow and deliberate, watching my face as if memorizing every flicker of joy in my expression. The sensation is a gentle tide, rising languidly, my body responding with a slick warmth that eases his touch. He slides one finger inside me, then two, curling them softly to stroke that hidden place, drawing out my pleasure in measured waves. I rock against his hand, my hips moving in a natural, unhurried rhythm, every movement a dialogue of trust and desire.

When the ache within me grows to a sweet, insistent need, Kael withdraws his fingers and positions himself at my entrance, the heat of him a welcoming promise. "Look at me, always," he whispers, his eyes never leaving mine as I lower myself onto him, inch by tender inch. The stretch is a profound fullness, a joining that feels like coming home…our bodies merging as one, the bond singing with amplified sensation: the velvet warmth enveloping him, the pulse of his heartbeat echoing in my veins, the flood of his love washing over me like a gentle river.

We pause there, fully connected, foreheads touching, breaths intertwining. "Yours," I sigh, my voice trembling with emotion as I begin to move….slow rises and falls, savoring the deep, languid drag of him inside me, the way he fills every empty space.

"Mine," he echoes, his hands steady on my hips, guiding me with infinite patience. "Forever, my heart." His thrusts meet mine in a harmonious dance, deliberate and deep, building the pleasure layer by layer. Sweat beads on our skin, glistening in the moonlight, and I see the wonder in his eyes mirroring my own…the arch of my back as ecstasy coils tighter, the flush on his cheeks from our shared rhythm. Soft whispers fill the air: "I love you," from his lips against my throat; my name, a prayer on his breath.

As the waves crest, we climb together, unhurried, our movements syncing in perfect unity. My release blooms like dawn light, warm and enveloping, my body clenching around him in gentle pulses, drawing a soft groan from deep in his chest. "Elena," he murmurs, his voice breaking with emotion as he follows, spilling into me with a warmth that seals our bond anew, his arms wrapping around me to hold me close through the lingering shivers.

We still at last, me nestled against his chest, his heartbeat a steady lullaby beneath my ear. His fingers trace lazy patterns on my back, and he presses a kiss to my temple. "Forever," he whispers, the word a vow etched in starlight, and in his embrace, I see our eternity…slow, sweet, and endlessly ours.
