Chapter 7 - Chapter 7 — Too Close

The room felt different after that.

He had said it so casually.

My enemies.

And somehow, that made everything worse.

Elena stood still, arms crossed, trying to process what she had just gotten herself into.

"A target list?" she repeated.

Victoria nodded, scrolling through the data.

"High-level individuals. Business figures. Political connections…"

A pause.

"…and some names that shouldn't even be here."

Elena frowned. "Meaning?"

Victoria didn't answer.

Instead, she turned the tablet toward Adrian.

His expression didn't change.

But his eyes?

Sharper.

Colder.

More focused than before.

"This isn't random," he said quietly.

"They're preparing something big."

Elena let out a slow breath.

"…And now I'm involved in it."

Not a question.

A fact.

Adrian looked at her.

"Yes."

Silence.

Heavy.

Unavoidable.

Elena ran a hand through her hair.

"Great. Love that for me."

Victoria glanced at her briefly, almost like she didn't know whether to be annoyed or impressed.

"You should be more concerned."

"Oh, I am," Elena replied flatly. "I just don't panic out loud."

Adrian stepped closer.

Again.

He always did that.

Closed the distance like it belonged to him.

"You'll stay close," he said.

"Until this is handled."

Elena frowned. "Define 'close.'"

A slight pause.

Then—

"With me."

Her expression tightened instantly.

"Yeah, that's not happening."

"It already is."

"I didn't agree to that."

Adrian's gaze held hers.

Unmoving.

"You don't have to."

There it was again.

That control.

That certainty.

That infuriating calm.

Elena took a step back this time.

Creating distance.

Finally.

"Let's get one thing straight," she said, voice steady. "I'm helping you because I don't have a choice. Not because I trust you."

Adrian didn't react.

"Trust isn't required."

"That's reassuring," she muttered.

Victoria cleared her throat softly.

"We should move. If they realize what we took—"

"They already know," Adrian cut in.

"Which is why we don't stay predictable."

Elena's eyes narrowed slightly.

"Meaning?"

Adrian looked at her.

"Meaning you're not staying here."

A pause.

Then—

"You're coming with me."

Something in her stomach dropped.

Not fear.

Not exactly.

Something else.

"…Where?"

Adrian didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he picked up his coat.

Calm.

Unbothered.

Like this was routine.

"Somewhere they won't expect."

An hour later—

The car moved through the city, faster than before.

More direct.

More intentional.

Elena sat in the back again.

But this time—

Adrian was beside her.

Not across.

Not distant.

Close.

Too close.

She could feel it.

His presence.

Heavy.

Unavoidable.

"Do you always do this?" she asked, eyes still on the window.

"Do what?"

"Drag people into your mess and call it protection."

A pause.

Then—

"Yes."

Elena let out a quiet laugh.

"Of course you do."

Silence settled again.

But it wasn't empty.

Not anymore.

Her eyes flicked slightly.

Just for a second.

Toward him.

He was watching her.

Of course he was.

"Do I make you nervous?" Adrian asked suddenly.

The question caught her off guard.

But she didn't show it.

"No."

A lie.

A good one.

His gaze didn't shift.

"Lying doesn't suit you."

Elena turned her head slightly now, finally looking at him.

"And control does?"

A pause.

Then—

"It works."

Their eyes locked.

Something changed.

Subtle.

But real.

Not fear.

Not curiosity.

Something closer to…

challenge.

Elena broke it first.

Leaning back slightly.

"Just so you know," she said calmly, "I'm not one of your people."

Adrian didn't look away.

"I know."

"Good."

A beat.

"Then stop treating me like I am."

Silence.

Then—

Something unexpected.

Adrian leaned slightly closer.

Not enough to touch.

But enough to cross a line.

"I treat you differently," he said quietly.

Elena's breath hitched—

Just slightly.

Just for a second.

"…That's not comforting."

A faint smirk.

Gone almost instantly.

"It's not supposed to be."

The car slowed.

Then stopped.

Elena looked outside.

Not a building.

Not an office.

A private residence.

Large.

Isolated.

Guarded.

She frowned. "Where are we?"

Adrian opened the door.

Stepping out first.

Then—

He looked back at her.

"My place."

And just like that—

Elena realized something new.

Being in his world was one thing.

But being in his space?

That was something else entirely.

To be continued...
