Alex moved through Marcus's headquarters like a ghost.
Shadow Step carried him past guards who never saw him, sensors that never registered his presence. He was a shadow among shadows, death wearing darkness as a cloak.
[TIME REMAINING: 52:18]
The building had seven floors. Marcus was on the top, but reaching him would require passing through layers of security. Alex decided on a direct approach—teleporting upward through shadowed corners and darkened rooms.
Floor 2. Clear.
Floor 3. Three guards, eliminated silently.
Floor 4. An alarm triggered—someone had found the bodies.
[ALERT: BUILDING IS NOW AWARE OF INTRUDER]
No more stealth.
Alex burst through the ceiling—literally, Shadow Step carrying him through a dark maintenance shaft—and emerged on the fifth floor to find soldiers waiting.
They opened fire.
Bullets meant nothing to the Midnight Monarch. He moved through the hail of lead like water, each shot missing by inches, closing the distance with each Shadow Step.
[VOID STRIKE]
The first soldier crumbled. The second fell before he could reload. The third managed to radio a warning before Alex's blade found his throat.
[TIME REMAINING: 44:55]
Sixth floor. More soldiers, better prepared. They'd formed a defensive line, covering all angles with overlapping fields of fire.
Alex didn't hesitate.
[SKILL: SOVEREIGN'S PRESENCE]
The weaker soldiers faltered, their instincts screaming at them to flee. The stronger ones held their ground but flinched at the wrong moments.
Alex cut through them like wheat.
[TIME REMAINING: 38:22]
The seventh floor was different. Luxurious. A penthouse converted into a command center. And standing at the far end, surrounded by his elite guard, was Marcus Kane.
The Warlord watched Alex approach with something like respect.
"You're more than you appeared to be," Marcus said. "A conditional power, triggered by... what? Nighttime? A specific hour?"
Alex didn't answer. He was assessing Marcus's guard—eight elite soldiers, all Level 15+. And Marcus himself, whose level the System displayed as [LEVEL 35 - WARLORD CLASS].
"You broke into my headquarters, killed my soldiers, and now you're standing in front of me." Marcus drew his sword—a weapon that glowed with enchantments. "Either you're incredibly brave or incredibly foolish."
"Maybe both."
Marcus smiled. "Let's find out."
The elite guard moved as one, surrounding Alex with coordinated precision. They were trained, experienced, and powerful.
They were also about to die.
[COMBAT INITIATED]
The first soldier attacked from behind—Alex caught the blade with Shadowblade, pivoted, and Void Struck through the man's guard. The second and third came simultaneously; Alex Shadow Stepped behind them and took both down before they could turn.
Four, five, six—they adjusted, falling into a defensive formation that covered each other's weaknesses. Alex took a cut to his arm, another to his leg. His health bar dropped.
[HEALTH: 78%]
[TIME REMAINING: 29:44]
He couldn't afford a prolonged fight.
[SKILL: MIDNIGHT DOMAIN]
[ACTION: CREATE ZONE WHERE MIDNIGHT RULES]
Darkness erupted outward from Alex, swallowing the room in absolute black. For everyone else, it was blinding. For Alex, it was home.
He moved through his own domain like a predator, eliminating soldiers one by one. They couldn't see him. Couldn't predict him. Could only die.
When the darkness faded, only Marcus remained.
The Warlord was breathing hard, his perfect composure cracked. He clutched a wound on his side, his enchanted sword flickering with unstable light.
"Whatever you are," Marcus said, "you're not human."
"I'm someone who protects what matters." Alex advanced. "You threatened my people. My home."
"Your people?" Marcus laughed bitterly. "They're sheep. Following whoever promises to keep them safe. You think they care about you? You think anyone cares about anyone but themselves?"
"Maybe not. But I care about them." Alex raised Shadowblade. "And that's enough."
[TIME REMAINING: 18:33]
Marcus attacked with desperate fury, his level advantage showing in the precision of his strikes. Alex blocked, dodged, counter-attacked. Both combatants took damage.
[HEALTH: 45%]
[MARCUS KANE HEALTH: 32%]
They circled each other, two predators in a ruined room.
"You could have joined me," Marcus said. "Built something real. Instead, you're dying for people who will forget your name within a week."
"Then they'll forget my name. At least they'll be alive to forget."
Marcus lunged. Alex sidestepped, caught the Warlord's arm, and drove Shadowblade through his chest.
[VOID STRIKE: CRITICAL HIT]
[MARCUS KANE HEALTH: 0]
Marcus gasped, his eyes wide with shock. He looked down at the blade in his chest, then up at Alex.
"How...?"
"By caring about something other than power."
Marcus's body dissolved into light, leaving only his sword and armor behind.

[LEVEL UP!]
[LEVEL UP!]
[LEVEL UP!]
[YOU ARE NOW LEVEL 6]
[TIME REMAINING: 8:15]
Alex grabbed the fallen sword—a blade that practically hummed with power—and Shadow Stepped toward the exit. He had eight minutes to escape the building before his power faded.
He made it out with three minutes to spare.
The city stretched before him, dangerous and dark. Somewhere out there, Sanctuary's survivors were regrouping. Maya was alive. His people were alive.
And Alex Chen, the nobody who'd died in a warehouse, had just killed the most powerful Warlord in the region.
The midnight power faded, leaving him weak but triumphant.
He had a long walk home.
