Maya found him after the battle, as the first light of dawn crept over the horizon.
His power had faded hours ago, leaving him exhausted and vulnerable. But she didn't attack. Didn't interrogate. She simply sat down next to him on the warehouse roof, where he'd gone to watch the sunrise.
"Midnight," she said quietly. "Your power activates at midnight."
Alex didn't deny it. "For one hour. Then I'm just... me again."
"Your glitch. It's not random. It's timed."
"It's a curse as much as a gift." He kept his eyes on the horizon. "During the day, I'm weak. Vulnerable. At night, for exactly one hour, I become something else entirely. But it's borrowed power. It doesn't last."
"And you've been hiding this because..."
"Because people would want to control it. Use me for that one hour and discard me for the other twenty-three. Or fear me during the midnight and eliminate me during the day." Alex finally looked at her. "You're the first person I've told willingly."
Maya was quiet for a long moment. Then she said, "Thank you for trusting me."
"You're not surprised?"
"I've suspected for a while. The inconsistencies, the midnight disappearances, the way you'd sometimes be barely adequate and other times unstoppable." She shrugged. "I'm a healer. I observe patterns. Your pattern was obvious once I started looking."
"And you're not going to tell Derek?"
"It's your secret to share. But Alex..." She turned to face him fully. "You can't protect this settlement alone. You need allies who know your full capability. People who can cover for you during your off hours."
"I know. That's why I'm telling you."
"Then let me help. Let me be your partner, not just your friend."
Alex studied her face. There was no manipulation in her expression, no hidden agenda. Just a genuine offer of support.
"What does that look like in practice?"
"It looks like me covering for you when you need to conserve energy. It looks like me creating alibis for your midnight activities. It looks like me healing you after battles and keeping your secrets." Maya smiled slightly. "It looks like trust."
"That's a lot to ask."
"I'm not asking. I'm offering." She stood, brushing off her clothes. "Think about it. But don't take too long. The city isn't going to stop being dangerous just because you're conflicted."
She left him alone with the sunrise.

In the weeks that followed, Maya kept her word.
She became Alex's shadow during the day, ensuring he wasn't isolated or vulnerable. She created cover stories for his midnight activities, explaining his absences as scouting missions or resource gathering. She healed his wounds after battles, asking no questions about how he'd received them.
Their partnership became known throughout the settlement. The mysterious fighter and the dedicated healer, always working together, always watching each other's backs.
Derek noticed, of course. But he didn't comment, accepting the arrangement as another of Alex's secrets that didn't harm the community.
Slowly, Sanctuary stabilized. The Order of the New Dawn retreated, regrouping after their failed assault. Other factions kept their distance, wary of the settlement that had repelled both Marcus Kane and religious zealots.
And Alex continued to grow.
Level 12.
Level 13.
Level 15.
[LEVEL UP!]
[NEW SKILL UNLOCKED: EXTENDED MIDNIGHT]
[EFFECT: YOUR MIDNIGHT POWER NOW LASTS FOR 75 MINUTES INSTEAD OF 60.]
Fifteen extra minutes. It wasn't much, but it was progress.
The evolution path still required Level 25. Alex pushed harder, clearing more dungeons, facing stronger enemies.
And then, one midnight, he found something unexpected.
[ITEM DETECTED: FRAGMENT OF ORIGINAL CODE]
[SOURCE: DUNGEON BOSS DROP]
[DESCRIPTION: A PIECE OF THE ANCIENT SYSTEM THAT PREDATES THE AWAKENING. THIS FRAGMENT IS SIMILAR TO THE ONE THAT GAVE YOU YOUR POWERS.]
Alex held the glowing shard in his hand, feeling its resonance with his own glitched System.
[SYSTEM ALERT: THE WATCHER WISHES TO COMMUNICATE]
A message appeared, scrolling across his vision:
[FIND MORE FRAGMENTS. EACH ONE BRINGS YOU CLOSER TO YOUR EVOLUTION. THEY ARE HIDDEN IN THE MOST POWERFUL DUNGEONS, GUARDED BY ENEMIES THAT SHOULDN'T EXIST.]
[THE SYSTEM IS TRYING TO DELETE YOU, LITTLE GLITCH. THESE FRAGMENTS ARE YOUR IMMUNITY.]
[I WILL GUIDE YOU WHEN I CAN. BUT THE PATH MUST BE WALKED ALONE.]
Alex absorbed the fragment, feeling it merge with his core.
[FRAGMENT ABSORBED]
[EVOLUTION PROGRESS: 5%]
Five percent. He had a long way to go.
But for the first time, he had a clear direction.
Find the fragments. Unlock the evolution. Become more than a glitch.
He could do this.
He had to.
