Chapter 20 - The Midnight Offensive

At the stroke of midnight, Alex rose.

[MIDNIGHT PROTOCOL ACTIVE]

[TIME REMAINING: 75:00]

His wounds closed. His strength returned. The exhaustion that had been weighing on him vanished, replaced by the familiar surge of overwhelming power.

But this time, something was different.

The anger didn't fade.

"You're going after them," Maya said. It wasn't a question.

"They threatened you. They attacked our home. They think they can take what they want without consequences." Alex's voice was cold. "I'm going to teach them otherwise."

"Alex, wait—"

"Stay here. Help the wounded. I'll be back before dawn."

He Shadow Stepped away before she could argue.

---

The Iron Legion's headquarters was a fortress. Located in the city's northern quadrant, it occupied an entire city block, surrounded by walls and defended by hundreds of soldiers.

Alex didn't care.

He appeared on the perimeter at 12:05 AM, his presence triggering immediate alarms.

[ALERT: HOSTILE APPROACHING]

[FIGHTERS SCRAMBLED]

Soldiers emerged from the compound, weapons ready. They saw a single figure standing in the darkness and laughed.

"One man? Against the entire Legion?"

Then Alex moved.

[SOVEREIGN'S PRESENCE: MAXIMUM OUTPUT]

The laughter stopped. Lower-level soldiers stumbled backward, overcome by primal terror. Those who held their ground found their attacks meaningless—Alex moved through their formation like smoke, striking with precision that bypassed all defense.

[VOID STRIKE]

[VOID STRIKE]

[VOID STRIKE]

He wasn't killing indiscriminately. He was dismantling. Each strike removed a weapon, disabled a limb, neutralized a threat without taking a life. The soldiers who survived would spread the word—would tell others what it felt like to face something beyond their comprehension.

By 12:20 AM, the perimeter was cleared. Alex entered the compound.

[TIME REMAINING: 55:00]

Inside, the resistance was better organized. Elite soldiers, Level 25+, formed defensive positions. They'd had time to prepare, to coordinate, to call for reinforcements.

It didn't matter.

[MIDNIGHT DOMAIN]

Darkness swallowed the compound. For the soldiers, it was blindness and terror. For Alex, it was home.

He moved through his own domain, dismantling defenses and disabling opponents. The Legion's elite training meant nothing against an enemy they couldn't see or predict.

[TIME REMAINING: 38:00]

He reached the command center. Inside, Vance stood with her remaining officers, surrounded by a last line of defense.

"You," she hissed. "You should be broken. Defeated."

"I was." Alex's voice echoed through the darkness. "Then midnight came."

"This is impossible. Your power—it's not natural. It's not System-granted."

"You're right. It's something else entirely." Alex stepped forward, his form emerging from the shadows. "And now you're going to answer for what you did."

Vance raised her weapon. "I am an officer of the Iron Legion. I don't surrender to anomalies."

"Then fall."

The fight was brief. Vance was skilled, but she was fighting in Alex's domain, against an opponent whose power bypassed all defense. Within moments, her weapon lay shattered, her officers disabled, her confidence broken.

Alex stood over her, Shadowblade at her throat.

"Give me one reason not to end this."

Vance met his eyes. "Because I have information you need. About the System. About the purges. About what's coming for you."

Alex paused. "Explain."

"The Iron Legion isn't just a faction. We're part of something larger—a network of settlements that survived the Awakening by making... arrangements. We provide the System with data. It provides us with advantages."

"You work for the System?"

"We work with the System. It's not sentient, exactly, but it has... processes. Protocols. One of those protocols involves identifying and eliminating anomalies."

"The purges."

Vance nodded. "The next one is scheduled soon. You've been flagged as a priority target. Not just you—anyone associated with you. Your settlement. Your healer. Everyone."

[TIME REMAINING: 22:00]

"Why tell me this?"

"Because the Legion underestimated you. We thought we could capture and study you. We were wrong." Vance's expression was grim. "If you kill me, the next attack will be worse. But if we form a truce, the Legion can help you survive what's coming."

Alex considered. He'd come here for vengeance. For justice. But the information Vance was offering was worth more than satisfaction.

"What kind of truce?"

"Non-aggression. Mutual defense against the purge. Information sharing." Vance stood slowly, her hands raised. "You don't have to trust me. But you should trust that the System's next move will be worse than anything we've done."

[TIME REMAINING: 15:00]

Alex made his decision.

"Sanctuary retains its independence. You return our captured resources. And you provide intelligence on every System-related operation in the region."

"Agreed."

"One more thing. If you ever threaten my people again—"

"You won't leave survivors. I understand."

Alex lowered his blade.

"Spread the word. Midnight belongs to me. And anyone who threatens what's mine answers to me."

Vance nodded.

The midnight power faded as Alex departed, leaving the Iron Legion's headquarters in chaos. He'd come for war and left with an alliance. It wasn't the outcome he'd expected, but it was better.

[QUEST COMPLETE: RETALIATION]

[REWARD: INTELLIGENCE ON SYSTEM PURGE PROTOCOLS]

[NEW QUEST: PREPARE FOR THE PURGE]

Back at Sanctuary, Maya was waiting.

"How did it go?"

"We have a truce. And we have information." Alex slumped against a wall, exhaustion returning with the fading power. "The System is coming for us. All of us. We need to be ready."

"When?"

"Weeks. Maybe less."

Maya nodded. "Then we prepare. Together."

Alex looked at the survivors—battered, wounded, but still standing. His people. His family.

"Together," he agreed.

The midnight was coming. But this time, they'd face it as one.
