Chapter 41 - Counteroffensive

Alex woke three days later.

His body ached, his Sovereign authority was depleted, and his connection to the System felt... stretched. But he was alive.

"You pushed too hard," Maya said, sitting beside his bed. "Your authority was barely holding together. Another few seconds and you would have dissolved."

"Did it work?"

"The artifact is destroyed. The Purist forces are scattered. The remnant's elite fighters retreated as soon as the suppression field fell." Maya's expression was grim. "But we took heavy losses. Forty-seven defenders dead. Twice that wounded. A third of the settlement is damaged."

"And the Sovereigns?"

"Sara is recovering. Her light abilities were severely taxed. Thomas is fine—shadow users have better endurance. Elena overextended her perception and needs rest. Kira..." Maya hesitated. "Kira is different."

"Different how?"

"Being your conduit for the authority transfer changed her. She's more connected to the System now. More powerful. But also more... distant. Like part of her is permanently somewhere else."

Alex struggled to sit up.

"I need to see her."

"Alex, you need rest—"

"I need to see her."

Maya sighed and helped him stand.

Kira was in the courtyard, but she wasn't alone. She was surrounded by a group of glitched survivors, all of whom were undergoing... something. Their Systems flickered, their bodies phased, but they weren't destabilizing. They were evolving.

"What is this?"

"The aftermath of your authority transfer." Kira turned to face him, her eyes filled with swirling numbers. "When you pushed through the suppression field, you didn't just shatter the artifact. You broadcast a pulse of Sovereign authority across the entire coalition. Everyone with a glitched System received a... boost."

"A boost?"

"A stabilization. A connection to something beyond the System's architecture." Kira gestured at the evolving survivors. "These people were stuck—unable to progress, unable to evolve. Your pulse gave them what they needed to move forward."

"How many?"

"Everyone in the coalition who was ready. Maybe a hundred, total. Some will become Sovereigns. Others will develop unique evolution paths." Kira's expression was unreadable. "You've accelerated our timeline significantly."

"Is that good or bad?"

"Both. Good because we're stronger. Bad because the remnant will notice. They're already regrouping, trying to understand how you bypassed their suppression field." Kira's eyes focused on Alex. "They're afraid of you now. Truly afraid. That makes them dangerous."

"They were already dangerous."

"Now they're desperate. And desperate enemies do unpredictable things."

Alex absorbed this. He'd saved Sanctuary, but he'd also escalated the conflict. The remnant wouldn't send proxies anymore. They would come personally.

"Can you find their location now?"

"I've been trying. The authority transfer created a connection—not just to the coalition, but to everything the authority touched. Including the remnant's artifacts." Kira closed her eyes. "I can feel them. In a dimension parallel to ours. A pocket of reality they created for themselves."

"Can we reach them?"

"Theoretically. But they'd sense us coming. And they've had millennia to prepare their defenses." Kira shook her head. "A direct assault would be suicide."

"Then what do you suggest?"

"We finish what you started. We train the new Sovereigns. We build our strength. We prepare for the confrontation that's coming." Kira's voice was steady. "And when we're ready, we go to them. Not as attackers—as liberators."

"Liberators?"

"The remnant isn't just an enemy. It's a fragment of the original System, just like the Watcher. It's doing what it believes is right, even if that means eliminating us." Kira's expression softened. "Maybe it can be shown another way. Maybe it can evolve, just like we did."

"You want to save the entity trying to kill us?"

"I want to end this conflict without destroying the System we all depend on." Kira met his eyes. "The creators approved our existence. They saw value in evolution. If we can show the remnant the same truth, maybe—just maybe—we can achieve peace."

Alex considered this. It was idealistic. Maybe naive. But it was also the kind of thinking that separated Sovereigns from tyrants.

"Alright. We try it your way. But we prepare for the possibility that it fails."

"Agreed. The coalition grows stronger every day. The new Sovereigns will need guidance. And you—" Kira's expression became stern. "You need to rest. Your authority is critically depleted. Pushing yourself further will cause permanent damage."

"I don't have time to rest."

"You don't have time NOT to rest. A Sovereign at half strength is worse than useless—it's a liability." Kira's voice was firm. "The coalition can handle things for a few days. Let us take some of the burden."

Alex wanted to argue, but he knew she was right. His body was screaming for recovery. His authority felt like a frayed rope, barely holding together.

"Two days. Then I'm back."

"Three days. Minimum."

"Two and a half."

"Three." Kira crossed her arms. "You're not the only Sovereign, Alex. Trust us to carry the weight while you recover."

Alex sighed.

"Fine. Three days."

He returned to his bed, letting exhaustion finally claim him.

The counteroffensive could wait.

Recovery came first.
