Chapter 40 - The Strike

The attack came at midnight.

Alex was awake, as he always was during his power window, when the alarms screamed through Sanctuary.

[ALERT: MULTIPLE BREACHES DETECTED]

[PERIMETER: COMPROMISED ON ALL SIDES]

[ENEMY FORCES: ESTIMATED 500+]

[THREAT LEVEL: CRITICAL]

He Shadow Stepped to the command center, materializing in a swirl of darkness. Derek was already there, shouting orders into communication crystals.

"Reports are coming in from every sector! They're hitting us simultaneously—north, south, east, west. There are hundreds of them!"

"Purists?"

"Mostly. But there are others—fighters in black armor I don't recognize. Higher level. Better equipped."

"The remnant's personal forces." Alex's jaw tightened. "They've committed directly."

[MIDNIGHT PROTOCOL ACTIVE]

[TIME REMAINING: 75:00]

"Get everyone to defensive positions. The Sovereigns take the front lines. The militia covers the flanks. The non-combatants retreat to the secondary bunker."

"Already in progress." Derek's voice was grim. "But Alex—there are a lot of them. More than we anticipated."

"Then we fight harder."

Alex Shadow Stepped to the northern perimeter, where the heaviest fighting was reported. What he saw made his blood run cold.

The Purists had brought siege weapons—massive crystalline structures that pulsed with anti-anomaly energy. The suppression fields they generated were weaker than the artifact Kira had destroyed, but their combined effect was significant.

[EFFECT: ANOMALY SUPPRESSION - MULTIPLE SOURCES]

[SOVEREIGN AUTHORITY: REDUCED BY 35%]

[RECOMMENDATION: DESTROY SIEGE WEAPONS PRIORITY]

More concerning were the black-armored fighters. Level 40+. Coordinated. Led by figures that radiated power unlike anything Alex had encountered.

"SOVEREIGN DETECTED," one of them called. "TARGET ACQUIRED."

They moved as one, converging on Alex's position.

He met them with Void Strike, but they were prepared. Their armor absorbed the attack, dispersing the energy harmlessly.

"COUNTER-MEASURES ENGAGED."

"Of course they are." Alex Shadow Stepped behind them, striking at the gaps in their formation. One fighter fell. Another. But more kept coming.

[TIME REMAINING: 68:00]

"Kira!"

The System Avatar materialized beside him, her body flickering with power.

"I see them. Their armor is powered by the remnant's code. I can disrupt it."

"DO IT."

Kira reached into the System architecture, targeting the connections that powered the black armor. The fighters staggered as their enchantments flickered.

"NOW, ALEX!"

He struck with renewed fury, his Void Strikes finding purchase against the suddenly vulnerable armor. Black-armored fighters fell in droves.

But there were always more.

And the Purist forces were breaching the perimeter elsewhere.

"Sara! Report!"

"Dawn Sovereign here. Southern perimeter holding. The siege weapons are slowing us down, but we're managing."

"Thomas!"

"Shadow Sovereign. Eastern perimeter—we've got problems. They've got something big. A massive artifact. It's generating a suppression field that's affecting everyone."

"Can you destroy it?"

"Not alone. They've got it guarded by elites."

"I'm coming."

Alex Shadow Stepped toward the eastern perimeter, but Kira grabbed his arm.

"Wait. I'm sensing something. A pattern in the attack."

"What pattern?"

"They're not trying to overwhelm us. They're herding us. Forcing our forces toward the center." Kira's eyes were distant. "It's a trap."

Before Alex could respond, the ground shook.

From beneath Sanctuary, something emerged.

A massive crystalline structure, pulsing with power, rising through the very foundations of the settlement. It dwarfed the siege weapons, its suppression field encompassing the entire coalition.

[ALERT: MEGA-ARTIFACT DETECTED]

[EFFECT: TOTAL ANOMALY SUPPRESSION]

[SOVEREIGN AUTHORITY: REDUCED BY 90%]

[RECOMMENDATION: IMMEDIATE EVACUATION]

Alex felt his power drain away. His midnight abilities flickered and died. Even his base stats were reduced to almost nothing.

"What is that?"

"The remnant's masterstroke." Kira's voice was weak. "A crystal designed to suppress all anomalies within a massive radius. They've been building it for weeks, right under us."

"Can you destroy it?"

"Not in my current state. The suppression affects me more than anyone—I'm connected to the System directly." Kira collapsed to her knees. "I'm sorry, Alex. I should have seen this coming."

Around them, Sanctuary's defenders faltered. The Sovereigns, their powers suppressed, were reduced to mere fighters. The glitched survivors, their abilities neutralized, were helpless.

The Purists and their allies advanced.

"THE ABOMINATIONS HAVE BEEN NEUTRALIZED," a voice boomed from the mega-artifact. "THE REMNANT'S WILL BE DONE."

Alex stood, his body weak but his will unbroken.

"This isn't over."

He drew Shadowblade—and it responded. Not with midnight power, but with something else. A connection that transcended the suppression field.

[SOVEREIGN AUTHORITY: TRANSCENDENCE DETECTED]

[WARNING: AUTHORITY SOURCE BEYOND SYSTEM ARCHITECTURE]

[EFFECT: SUPPRESSION FIELD INEFFECTIVE]

The Watcher had said his evolution path was about transcending the System's limitations.

Apparently, it was right.

Alex's power returned—not fully, but enough. His midnight abilities were still suppressed, but his Sovereign authority remained. And that authority was growing.

"Kira. Can you channel my authority?"

"Maybe. Why?"

"I'm going to push everything I have into the System architecture. Use it to shatter that crystal."

"That could destroy you."

"Staying here will destroy everyone." Alex met her eyes. "Do it."

Kira nodded.

Alex reached deep into his being, into the core of what made him a Sovereign, and pushed. The authority flowed out of him, into Kira, who channeled it into the System architecture.

The mega-artifact cracked.

"IMPOSSIBLE!" the voice screamed. "THE SUPPRESSION—"

"DOESN'T WORK ON WHAT'S BEYOND THE SYSTEM!"

The artifact shattered.

[MEGA-ARTIFACT DESTROYED]

[SUPPRESSION FIELD: TERMINATED]

[SOVEREIGN AUTHORITY: CRITICAL]

Alex collapsed, his vision fading.

But around him, the Sovereigns rose.

Their powers returned. Their strength restored. And their enemies were now the ones facing overwhelming force.

"FINISH THEM," Alex whispered.

And the Sovereigns obeyed.
