Chapter 34 - Situation

The cabin lights dimmed as the aircraft reached its cruising altitude, plunging the business-class section into a soft, blue-tinted sanctuary.

Eun-soo, exhausted from the weight of her secret responsibilities and the restless nights she had spent thinking of the man beside her, felt her eyelids grow heavy.

After a few minutes of light, whispered conversation that felt safer than the silence, she finally let her eyes close, her breathing slowing into a rhythmic, peaceful cadence.

Beside her, Jin-woo remained a pillar of focused energy, his tablet illuminating his sharp features as he manipulated the 3D model of Saebyeol Oreum.

He was deep in thought, his mind a whirlwind of variables: laser refraction indices, the humidity of the Jeju air, and the exact coordinates for the LiDAR drones to begin their sweep.

He was so absorbed in calculating the "Digital Twin" of the volcano that he didn't notice the slow, graceful tilt of the person next to him.

Because they were in business class, there was a physical gap between their seats, but neither had raised the privacy partition, leaving the space between them open and unguarded.

Suddenly, a soft weight pressed against his arm, and then, a head fell gently onto his shoulder.

Jin-woo froze instantly, his fingers hovering over the tablet screen as if he had been struck by lightning.

The warmth of Eun-soo's head against his shoulder was a sensation he wasn't prepared for; it was a physical invasion of his carefully guarded personal space that felt both terrifying and undeniably right.

Her soft, calm breaths began to fall steadily against the crook of his neck and the upper part of his chest, each exhale sending a jolt through his nervous system.

His heart, usually a steady machine of logic and discipline, began to beat faster and faster, a drumbeat of panic and adoration echoing in his ears.

He remained perfectly still, afraid that even a shallow breath would disturb her and break the spell of this unexpected intimacy.

He looked down at her, dazed by the proximity; in the dim light of the cabin, she looked incredibly peaceful, the stress of the city completely smoothed away from her features.

Her long lashes cast soft shadows on her cheeks, and a stray lock of hair brushed against his collarbone, making his skin tingle with a sensation he couldn't name.

After a few minutes of internal struggle, Jin-woo decided he should probably try to move her back to her own seat for her own comfort—and his own sanity.

He reached out a hand, intending to gently guide her head back to the headrest, but as his fingers brushed her shoulder, Eun-soo murmured something unintelligible in her sleep.

Instead of pulling away, she shifted closer, her small hands reaching out to instinctively hug his arm through the soft, peach-colored fabric of her hoodie.

The material was incredibly soft, but the warmth of her body beneath it was what truly disarmed him.

She nuzzled her face into his bicep, holding onto him as if he were a lifeline in a turbulent sea, her grip firm yet trusting.

Jin-woo's breath hitched in his throat; he was now completely trapped, anchored to the seat by a woman who thought she was holding a pillow, but was actually holding his entire world.

In the mean time, row ahead, his mother and father turned their heads back to check on their son.

They saw the scene—the cold, stoic CEO turned into a human pillow, his expression a mixture of shock and profound tenderness.

They exchanged a quick, delighted glance and smiled slightly at one another, but they were wise enough not to say a single word.

They quickly turned back around, pretending to be deeply interested in the clouds outside, leaving their son to navigate this emotional minefield on his own.

Hajun was also deep in sleep near his grandmother, his small chest rising and falling in sync with the quiet hum of the engines.

Looking at the back of his parents' heads, Jin-woo didn't know whether to laugh or cry at their obvious antics; he knew he would never hear the end of this later.

As the flight continued, Eun-soo shifted again, her head sliding from his shoulder to rest directly against his chest, right over his pounding heart.

Her soft cheek brushed against the fabric of his black shirt, her proximity creating a swarm of butterflies in his stomach that no amount of logic could suppress.

He could feel the warmth of her face through the thin cotton, and for the first time in his life, the "Heart" he was working on felt less important than the one beating beneath her ear.

Jin-woo eventually found a way to adjust his position, holding his tablet with his free hand so he could continue working while ensuring she remained comfortably supported.

Time seemed to warp and slow down in that dim cabin; the minutes felt like hours, yet he found himself wishing the flight would never end.

He became hyper-aware of everything—the scent of her shampoo, the slight weight of her hands on his arm, and the way her breath hitched whenever the plane hit a pocket of air.

He felt a fierce, protective instinct flare up within him, a silent vow that as long as she was leaning on him, nothing would dare disturb her peace.

But as the pilot's voice crackled over the intercom, announcing their descent into Jeju International Airport, the dream began to dissolve.

"Ladies and gentlemen, we are beginning our final descent. Please return to your seats and fasten your seatbelts."

Eun-soo had actually stirred awake a few minutes earlier, the change in cabin pressure and the shift in his heartbeat alerting her to her surroundings.

However, realizing where she was—and who she was hugging—she had been too paralyzed by embarrassment to move.

She had stayed there, her heart racing as fast as his, wondering how she could possibly extract herself without making the situation more awkward than it already was.

The seatbelt announcement gave her the perfect "out."

She acted as if the voice had just startled her awake, slowly lifting her head and blinking her eyes as if coming out of a deep fog.

She looked at Jin-woo, her face flushing a deep, brilliant pink that matched her hoodie as she realized she was still clutching his arm.

"Oh... oh my goodness," she stammered, quickly releasing his arm and retreating to her own seat, her hands fluttering nervously.

"I am so sorry, Mr. Jin-woo! I... I have no idea when I fell asleep on you like that. I must have been more tired than I thought."

She looked away, unable to meet his gaze, her heart still thudding against her ribs from the memory of his steady heartbeat.

Jin-woo, despite his own internal chaos, forced his voice to remain level and calm, though a hint of the lingering warmth remained in his eyes.

"It is perfectly alright, Miss Eun-soo," he said, turning his tablet off. "You've been working hard at the school and the move was sudden. You probably needed the rest."

He looked at her small frame, the peach hoodie making her look even more delicate than usual.

"Besides," he added, a rare, genuine softness entering his tone, "you don't have much weight to begin with. It wasn't a burden at all. It was... okay."

The way he said "okay" made it sound like it was much more than that, and as the plane touched down on the Jeju runway.
