Chapter 8: The Thing Behind Him
Warning.
The system's voice cut through Emily's thoughts — sharp and urgent.
Unknown entity approaching.
Emily's breath hitched.
Unknown entity?
Her eyes slowly lifted—
toward Daniel.
---
At first…
nothing looked different.
He stood the same way. Calm. Still. Watching her.
But then—
her vision flickered.
Just like before.
---
And this time…
it didn't disappear.
---
Behind Daniel—
something stood.
---
Tall.
Darker than the shadows around it.
Its shape wasn't fully human… but close enough to be disturbing.
Like something trying to imitate a person—
and failing.
---
Emily's heart slammed against her chest.
"…Daniel," she whispered.
He frowned slightly.
"What?"
---
"You don't… feel that?" she asked, her voice trembling just a little.
Daniel's expression shifted.
"Feel what?"
---
The thing behind him moved.
Slowly.
Its head tilted—
unnaturally.
As if it was studying her.
---
Do not engage.
The system's voice returned quickly.
Threat level: Unknown.
---
Emily couldn't look away.
"What… is that?" she whispered.
---
And then—
it spoke.
---
Not out loud.
Not with sound.
But directly into her mind.
---
…So… you can see me…
---
Emily's body went cold.
Her lips parted slightly.
It wasn't the system.
This voice was different.
Deeper.
Older.
---
"Emily?"
Daniel's voice sounded distant now.
Like he was outside of something she had stepped into.
---
Interesting… the entity continued.
You are not like the others…
---
Emily's hands trembled slightly at her sides.
"What are you?" she asked, barely breathing.
---
The thing smiled.
Or at least—
something on its face mimicked a smile.
---
I am what remains…
A pause.
…when your kind reaches the end.
---
Her heart stopped.
"What do you mean?"
---
The entity leaned closer—
still behind Daniel.
Still unseen by him.
---
Your system feeds…
It consumes…
And when there is nothing left…
---
A long, chilling pause.
---
…we take what remains.
---
Emily's vision blurred slightly.
"No…"
---
You were warned, it said calmly.
---
The system suddenly reacted—
loud.
Aggressive.
---
Do not listen.
Hostile entity detected.
Initiating suppression—
---
A sharp pain shot through Emily's head.
She gasped, grabbing onto the sink again.
---
The shadow's expression shifted—
amused.
---
Ah… it still tries to protect you…
---
Emily struggled to stay conscious.
"What… are you talking about…?"
---
The entity's gaze didn't leave hers.
---
The system is not your power…
A pause.
---
It is your leash.
---
Everything went silent.
---
Emily's mind raced.
Leash?
No…
that couldn't be true.
---
"Emily!"
Daniel's voice snapped her back.
---
The vision vanished instantly.
The shadow—
gone.
---
Emily staggered slightly, breathing heavily.
Daniel grabbed her arm to steady her.
"Hey—what's wrong with you?"
---
She looked at him—
really looked this time.
---
Nothing behind him.
Nothing unusual.
Just Daniel.
---
But her hands were still shaking.
---
"…It spoke to me," she whispered.
---
Daniel's expression hardened.
"What did?"
---
Emily hesitated.
Then said the words she wasn't ready to say—
---
"Something behind you."
---
Silence.
---
Daniel didn't laugh.
Didn't question her.
---
Instead—
his grip tightened slightly.
---
"…You saw it," he said quietly.
---
Emily's eyes widened.
"You know about it?"
---
Daniel didn't answer immediately.
But the look in his eyes said everything.
---
Yes.
---
And whatever this was…
it was far worse than the system.
