Chapter 7: The One Who Didn't Make It

Daniel didn't answer immediately.

For a moment, he just stood there… looking at Emily like he was deciding something important.

Trust her?

Or walk away?

---

"You really want to know?" he asked finally.

Emily nodded.

"Yes."

Her voice was steady this time.

No pride.

No attitude.

Just honesty.

---

Daniel exhaled slowly.

"Then listen carefully," he said. "Because once I tell you this… you don't get to pretend it's not real anymore."

A small pause.

Then—

"I had a friend."

---

The words were simple.

But something about the way he said them…

felt heavy.

---

"His name was Ryan."

Emily stayed quiet, letting him continue.

---

"He wasn't rich. Wasn't popular. Just… normal," Daniel said, his eyes distant, like he wasn't really seeing the room anymore.

"Then one day… he changed."

Emily's heart beat faster.

Just like her.

---

"At first, it was small," Daniel continued. "Confidence. Charisma. People started liking him more."

A bitter smile appeared on his face.

"Sound familiar?"

Emily didn't answer.

---

"He told me about it," Daniel said. "Said he had something… a 'system.'"

Emily's breath caught.

---

"I didn't believe him at first," Daniel admitted. "Until I saw it."

"What did you see?" Emily asked quietly.

---

Daniel's expression darkened.

"People stopped acting like themselves around him."

"They agreed with everything he said."

"They followed him."

A pause.

"Like they didn't have a choice."

---

Emily felt a chill crawl up her spine.

---

"But then…" Daniel's voice lowered, "…things started going wrong."

Her stomach tightened.

"How?"

---

"He stopped laughing," Daniel said.

The words were soft.

But they hit hard.

---

"At first, I thought he was just stressed," he continued. "But then I realized…"

Another pause.

"He couldn't feel anything anymore."

---

Emily's fingers trembled slightly.

The system's warning echoed again:

…lose everything that makes you human.

---

"I tried to talk to him," Daniel said. "Tried to get him to stop using it."

His jaw tightened slightly.

"But he said the same thing you said."

Emily looked up at him.

"What?"

---

"I'm in control."

---

Silence.

---

"But he wasn't," Daniel continued. "Not anymore."

His voice was colder now.

More controlled.

Like he had forced himself to accept something painful.

---

"What happened to him?" Emily asked.

Even though…

part of her already knew the answer.

---

Daniel didn't respond immediately.

When he did—

his voice was almost emotionless.

---

"He disappeared."

---

The word hung in the air.

Heavy.

Final.

---

"No warning. No goodbye," Daniel added. "One day he was there…"

"…the next day, gone."

---

Emily swallowed hard.

"That doesn't just happen," she said. "People don't just disappear."

Daniel looked at her.

"They do."

A pause.

"When something takes them."

---

A cold silence filled the room.

---

Emily's mind raced.

"Did you try to find him?"

"I did," Daniel said.

"And?"

---

Daniel's eyes darkened slightly.

---

"I found… traces."

Emily's breath slowed.

"What kind of traces?"

---

For the first time—

Daniel hesitated again.

---

"Things that didn't make sense," he said. "Places he had been… but no one remembered him."

Emily's heart skipped.

"…What?"

---

"It's like he was erased," Daniel said quietly.

"Not just gone…"

"…but forgotten."

---

Emily felt a deep chill settle in her chest.

That was worse than disappearing.

Much worse.

---

"And you think that's what's going to happen to me?" she asked softly.

---

Daniel didn't answer right away.

But this time…

he didn't look away.

---

"Yes."

---

The word landed heavily between them.

---

Emily looked down at her hands.

For the first time since the system appeared…

she felt truly afraid of it.

---

"…Then why are you helping me?" she asked.

---

Daniel was quiet for a moment.

Then he said something unexpected.

---

"Because I didn't help him in time."

---

Silence.

---

Emily slowly looked up at him.

And in that moment—

she didn't just see a calm, mysterious boy.

---

She saw someone carrying guilt.

Regret.

And a second chance.

---

System rebooting…

The voice suddenly echoed faintly in her mind again.

---

Warning.

---

Emily's eyes widened slightly.

---

Emotional instability detected.

External influence increasing.

---

Her heart began to race.

---

Because this time…

the system didn't sound calm.

---

It sounded threatened.
