As the first light of dawn touched the shelter, Koram was already on his feet. Using his heavy staff, he was taking strange measurements around the field, the stone walls, and the steaming roof of the sauna. Before we had even finished breakfast, he laid out a complex diagram scratched into the dirt before us.
"This settlement is like a babe in the woods," Koram said, his voice stern yet instructional. "You feed it constantly, but you aren't letting it grow. If we combine my bellows nozzle with Barun's muscle, we can turn this shelter into a fortress where you'll sweat even in the dead of winter."
Barun grunted at first—"My furnace was doing just fine!"—but he quickly succumbed to curiosity as Koram explained the mechanics. The improvement plan was three-fold: The High-Heat Kiln, Underfloor Heating, and Advanced Perimeter Defense.
We started with the kiln. Following Koram's instructions, Barun stacked stones in a domed shape, sealing the gaps with wet clay. This time, the furnace was completely enclosed, save for a small chimney at the top and a port on the side for Koram's bellows. We placed the Red Slime into the heart of the structure. As Koram began pumping the deer-hide bellows rapidly, the orange glow inside suddenly intensified, turning into a blinding white light. The heat became so concentrated that standing near it was nearly impossible.
"Now it's cooking!" Barun shouted with excitement.
That evening, we pulled the first pottery and long clay pipes from the kiln and plunged them into the stream. Unlike before, where the clay turned back to mud, it now let out a sharp metallic ping and held its shape. We finally had true ceramic.
Without wasting a moment, we moved to phase two. Under Koram's direction, we connected these clay pipes to the hot spring source at the sauna. We buried the pipes beneath the floor of the main shelter and covered them with flat stones. As the hot water began to circulate through the pipes, the floor of the cabin slowly started to radiate warmth.
When Eliz stepped inside and felt the soft heat beneath her feet, her eyes widened. "This... this is like magic," she whispered. We would no longer have to fear freezing in that single bed.
Finally, we addressed the defense. Outside the trench, Koram set up a series of "tripwires" hidden in the tall grass. These wires were connected to hollow bones and stones found in the forest. If anyone—or anything—approached, a subtle clattering would echo inside the shelter as an early warning.
By day's end, we were exhausted, but our home was no longer just a "shelter." It was a true homestead with hot running water, heated floors, and an early warning system.
During dinner, we drank our hot stew from clay bowls for the first time. Barun leaned back with a satisfied grin, while Koram was already talking about bracing a beam in the ceiling. As Eliz and I lay down on our bed above the heated floor, the wild sounds of the forest felt far away.
