Chapter 33 - CHAPTER 32 — Xue’s Trap Tightens

The palace was restless.

Not loud.

Not chaotic.

Just… restless.

A kind of tension that clung to the air like humidity before a storm.

Lin Yue felt it the moment she stepped into the courtyard.

Servants bowed too quickly.

Eunuchs avoided her eyes.

Even the birds seemed to chirp more cautiously.

Xiao An rushed to her side, clutching a folded piece of silk.

"My Lady… this was found outside our gate."

Lin Yue took it.

The silk was embroidered with a single plum blossom — Noble Consort Xue's signature.

Inside was a short message:

"The palace listens. Be careful what you say."

Xiao An trembled.

"She's threatening you again."

Lin Yue folded the silk calmly.

"No. She's warning me that she's already begun."

The Rumors Spread

By midday, the whispers had grown louder.

"She accepted gifts…"

"She's abusing her seal…"

"She's getting arrogant…"

"She thinks she's already a consort…"

Lin Yue walked through the corridor with steady steps, but she could feel the eyes on her — curious, judgmental, hungry.

Xiao An whispered, "My Lady, they're all looking at you."

"I know."

"Should we go back?"

"No."

Running would only feed the rumors.

As they turned a corner, two concubines quickly lowered their voices — but not quickly enough.

"…the Empress Dowager is investigating her…"

"…if she's guilty, she'll be demoted…"

"…Xue must be delighted…"

Lin Yue paused.

The concubines froze.

Then bowed awkwardly and hurried away.

Xiao An clenched her fists.

"They're enjoying this."

Lin Yue's voice was soft.

"Let them. Their enjoyment will be short-lived."

A Visit from the Empress

That afternoon, a palace maid arrived.

"Noble Lady Lin, the Empress requests your presence."

Lin Yue exchanged a glance with Xiao An.

"She never summons you," Xiao An whispered.

Lin Yue nodded.

"Which means she has something to say."

The Empress's Garden

The Empress sat beneath a pavilion, her posture elegant, her expression calm — too calm.

Lin Yue bowed.

"Greetings, Your Majesty."

The Empress gestured for her to sit.

"Lin Yue," she began, "you are in a difficult position."

Lin Yue kept her gaze lowered.

"Yes, Your Majesty."

"The Empress Dowager is watching you. The harem is whispering. And Noble Consort Xue…"

She paused.

"…is tightening her grip."

Lin Yue lifted her head slightly.

"You believe she is behind the rumors?"

The Empress gave a faint, humorless smile.

"Believe? I know."

Lin Yue's breath stilled.

The Empress continued,

"Xue is not reckless. She is patient. She plants seeds and waits for them to grow. She wants you isolated. She wants you doubted. She wants you to panic."

Lin Yue's voice remained steady.

"I will not panic."

The Empress studied her for a moment.

"You are calm," she said. "That is good. But calmness alone will not protect you."

Lin Yue frowned.

"What do you mean?"

The Empress leaned forward slightly.

"Xue has allies. Ministers. Servants. Even some of the concubines. She has been in this palace far longer than you. She knows its shadows."

Lin Yue's fingers tightened around her sleeve.

The Empress's voice softened.

"You must be careful. Not just with your actions — but with your silence. In the palace, silence can be twisted as easily as words."

Lin Yue bowed her head.

"I understand."

The Empress nodded.

"Good. Then understand this as well: Xue will not stop. Not until she believes you are no longer a threat."

Lin Yue looked up, her eyes steady.

"And I am a threat?"

The Empress held her gaze.

"Yes."

Returning to the Moonlit Courtyard

Xiao An rushed to her.

"My Lady! What did the Empress say?"

Lin Yue walked slowly, her mind turning.

"She said Xue will not stop."

Xiao An swallowed.

"Then what do we do?"

Lin Yue looked at the magnolia tree, its petals drifting softly in the breeze.

"We don't run," she said.

"We don't hide."

"We don't break."

Xiao An blinked.

"Then what?"

Lin Yue's voice was quiet, but firm.

"We wait."

"Wait?"

"Yes," Lin Yue said. "Because Xue is tightening her trap."

She turned toward the lanterns, her eyes calm.

"And when she pulls it closed… she will reveal herself."

Later That Night

The emperor arrived, his expression dark.

"Xue is spreading more rumors."

Lin Yue nodded.

"I know."

He stepped closer, frustration simmering beneath his calm.

"Why aren't you angry?"

Lin Yue looked up at him.

"Because anger clouds judgment. And she wants me clouded."

The emperor stared at her — then slowly, a faint smile touched his lips.

"You're becoming someone very difficult to defeat."

Lin Yue lowered her gaze.

"I'm becoming someone I need to be."

He reached out, brushing her cheek gently.

"And I will be here," he murmured, "for every step of it."

Lin Yue's heart trembled — but her voice remained steady.

"I know."

As he left, Lin Yue stood beneath the magnolia tree, the petals drifting around her like silent witnesses.

Xue's trap was tightening.

But Lin Yue was ready.

Because she had learned something important:

A trap only works if the prey panics.

And Lin Yue was no longer prey.
