Chapter 28 - Chapter 28: When it stops feeling like a Choice

It didn't feel like a decision anymore.

That was what unsettled me the most.

At first, everything had been about choosing, staying or leaving, resisting or accepting, pretending or admitting. Every step felt like something I had to think through, something I had to justify.

Now… there was nothing left to justify.

I stayed.

Not because I was forcing myself to.

Not because I had no other option.

But because it no longer felt like something I could walk away from.

You're quiet again.

I exhaled softly. You're starting to sound repetitive.

And you're starting to sound used to it.

I glanced at Kairo. That's not something I should be proud of.

It's not something you're denying either.

I didn't respond.

Because he was right.

Again.

You stopped thinking about leaving completely, he said.

That's not true, I replied. I just don't think about it the same way.

How?

I hesitated.

It doesn't feel real anymore.

Silence.

Then

Explain.

I frowned slightly. Before, leaving felt like something I could actually do. Like it was just a matter of time.

And now?

A pause.

Now it feels like something that belongs to a different version of me.

The words settled heavily between us.

Because they were true.

More true than anything else I'd said so far.

Kairo didn't speak immediately.

But I saw it.

That quiet shift in his expression.

You changed, he said.

I know.

You accepted it.

I stopped fighting it, I corrected.

That's the same thing.

No, I said. "It just means I stopped pretending I didn't already choose."

Silence followed.

Then

You finally understand.

I let out a small breath. I don't know if I'd go that far.

You do.

I understand part of it, I said. "Not everything.

You don't need everything.

I do, I insisted. That's how I make sense of things.

And has that worked so far?

I didn't answer.

Because… it hadn't.

Silence stretched, but it didn't feel uncomfortable.

It just existed.

Like everything else had started to.

You're not unsettled anymore, Kairo said.

I am, I replied. Just not in the same way.

How?

It's quieter, I admitted. Before, it felt like everything was pulling in different directions. Now

A pause.

Now it feels like everything is already in place.

That was the difference.

Kairo stepped closer.

Not sudden.

Not forceful.

Just enough to close the distance again.

That's because it is, he said.

I glanced at him. "You really believe that.

Yes.

No doubt?

No.

I exhaled softly. "I wish I could be that certain.

You are.

I frowned. "No, I'm not.

You are, he repeated. You're just not questioning it anymore.

That's not the same thing.

It is.

I shook my head slightly. "You always say that.

Because it's true.

Another pause.

You're still thinking about him," he said.

I didn't deny it. "Barely.

That will fade.

I know.

But you don't need it anymore.

I looked at him. "That's not why I kept it.

Then why?

Because it reminded me this wasn't simple, I said. "That it mattered.

Silence.

It doesn't change anything," he replied.

I know," I said. "But it still mattered.

He didn't argue.

Which meant he accepted it.

In his own way.

You're settling into this," he said.

That still sounds wrong.

It's not.

It feels like it is.

Why?

Because it means I'm not trying to leave anymore, I said. "And that's… new.

You already stopped.

I know," I said. "But realizing it is different.

That was the problem.

Before, I acted without fully understanding it.

Now

I understood it.

And that made it real.

You're not holding back anymore, Kairo said.

I frowned slightly. "What do you mean?

You don't hesitate when you answer.

I paused.

Because… he was right.

I didn't notice, I admitted.

I did.

Of course he did.

That doesn't mean anything, I said.

It does.

I looked at him again.

And this time

I didn't look away.

Then what does it mean? I asked quietly.

Silence.

That

You already know.

That answer again.

You always say that, I muttered.

Because you always avoid saying it.

I'm not avoiding it.

You are.

I exhaled slowly.

It means I'm not second-guessing this anymore.

The words came out steady.

Clear.

Unavoidable.

Silence followed.

Heavy

But not tense.

Kairo stepped closer.

Closer than before.

Until there was barely any space left between us.

And? he asked.

And what?

What does that change?

I hesitated.

Because this part

This part mattered.

It means I'm not treating this like something temporary anymore.

The truth settled between us is

Clear.

Final.

Kairo didn't look surprised.

He never did.

It never was,he said.

It was for me, I replied.

And now?

A pause.

Now it's not.

Silence.

But it didn't feel uncertain.

It felt… complete.

You're not leaving," he said.

Not a question.

Not a command.

Just certainty.

I swallowed.

No.

And this time

It didn't feel like a choice anymore.

It felt like something I had already become part of.
