Chapter 27 - Chapter 27: The Way it starts to mean something

It didn't feel like something I was stuck in anymore. That was the difference. Before, everything felt temporary, like I was just passing through, waiting for the right moment to leave. Now… there was no waiting. No exit plan sitting in the back of my mind. Just this. Just here. And somehow, that made everything heavier.

"You're thinking again."

I didn't look at him. "You're always around when I do."

"Yes."

"That's not normal."

"It is here."

I exhaled softly. "You always say that like it explains everything."

"It does."

"It really doesn't."

Silence followed, but it didn't stretch like before. It settled quickly, naturally, like neither of us felt the need to fill it anymore. That was new. And I still wasn't sure how to deal with it.

"You stopped questioning it," Kairo said.

"I didn't stop," I replied. "I just… don't see the point anymore."

"That's the same thing."

"No, it's not," I said. "It just means I'm not fighting something I already decided."

"Why?"

I hesitated. "Because I can't change it."

"You can."

I frowned slightly, finally looking at him. "Then why haven't I?"

Silence.

Because we both knew the answer.

"…Because I don't want to," I admitted.

The words didn't feel forced anymore. They didn't feel like something I was dragged into saying. They just… existed. Kairo watched me carefully, like he always did when I stopped holding things back.

"You're finally saying it," he said.

"I guess I am."

"You stayed because you wanted to."

I let out a small breath. "You really don't let that go."

"No."

"I noticed."

Silence again, but it wasn't uncomfortable. It wasn't something I wanted to escape from. That alone said more than anything else.

"You're not unsettled anymore," he added.

"That's not true," I said. "I just understand it better."

"That's the same thing."

"No," I replied. "Understanding something doesn't mean it stops being complicated."

"It means you accept it."

"I don't know if I'd call it that."

"What would you call it?"

I paused, thinking about it. "I'd call it… not resisting anymore."

"That's acceptance."

I shook my head slightly. "You really like simple answers."

"Because they're correct."

"Or because they're easier."

"They're the same."

I didn't argue this time. There was no point. Not when I already knew how this would go.

"You're still thinking about him," Kairo said.

I didn't deny it. "Less."

"That will fade."

"I know."

"But you don't want it to disappear."

I glanced at him. "You really do hear everything."

"Yes."

I exhaled quietly. "I don't want to forget that it mattered."

"It didn't change anything."

"I know," I said. "But it still mattered."

Silence followed, and for once, he didn't argue. That meant he accepted it. In his own way.

"You're settling into this," he said.

"That still sounds wrong," I replied.

"It's not."

"It feels like it is."

"Why?"

"Because it means this is becoming… normal," I said. "And it shouldn't be."

"It already is."

I frowned slightly. "You really don't question anything once you decide it."

"No."

"I wish I could do that."

"You don't need to."

"I do," I said. "Because I still think about what this means."

"And?"

"And I don't have a clear answer," I admitted.

Silence.

"You don't need one," he said.

"I do."

"No."

"Yes," I insisted. "Because this isn't just something I can stay in without understanding."

"That's exactly what it is."

I let out a small, frustrated breath. "You're impossible."

"And you're still here."

That again. Always that. But this time, it didn't annoy me. It didn't frustrate me. It just… stayed. Because it was true.

"I'm still here," I repeated quietly.

"And you're not leaving."

"No."

The word came easily now. Without hesitation. Without doubt.

Silence followed, but it felt different. Less like something waiting to be filled. More like something already complete.

"You're not pulling away anymore," Kairo said.

I frowned slightly. "What do you mean?"

"You don't step back when I get close."

I paused.

Because… he was right.

"I didn't notice," I said.

"I did."

Of course he did.

"That doesn't mean anything," I added.

"It does."

I looked at him again, but this time, I didn't look away immediately. And that alone made my chest tighten slightly.

"…Then what does it mean?"

Silence.

Then—"You tell me."

That answer again.

"You're the one who keeps pointing it out," I said.

"Because you won't say it."

"I don't know what you want me to say."

"The truth."

I exhaled slowly. "…I don't think this feels temporary anymore."

The words came out quietly, but they didn't shake. They didn't hesitate. They just… existed.

Kairo stepped closer. Not sudden. Not forceful. Just enough to close the space between us completely.

"It never was," he said.

"It was for me," I replied.

"And now?"

A pause.

"…Now it feels real."

Silence settled between us, but it didn't feel heavy. It didn't feel uncertain. It just felt… clear.

"You finally said it," he said.

"I guess I did."

"And you meant it."

"Yes."

There was no hesitation in that answer. No doubt. No second thoughts.

Because it was true.

And once something becomes real—there's no going back to pretending it isn't.

"You're not leaving," Kairo said.

I swallowed.

"…No."

And this time, it didn't feel like a decision anymore.

It felt like a fact.
