📖 Chapter 5: Shadows That Breathe
Darkness.
Not just the absence of light—
Something heavier.
Something alive.
Roronoa Zoro opened his eyes slowly.
Cold stone pressed against his back.
The air was damp.
Thick.
Each breath carried a metallic taste.
Blood.
Rust.
Something worse.
"…Tch."
His body felt heavy.
Not from injury.
From restriction.
His hand moved slightly.
Clink.
Chains.
Not normal ones.
He felt it immediately.
Chakra.
Flowing through the metal.
Suppressing him.
Like invisible snakes coiling around his bones.
"…They're trying to lock me down."
A faint sound echoed in the darkness.
Drip.
Drip.
Water?
No.
Too thick.
Too slow.
Zoro sat up.
The chains rattled violently.
The sound echoed—and died.
His eyes scanned the cell.
Narrow.
Dangerous.
The walls—
Scratched.
Deep marks carved into stone.
Not random.
Desperate.
Repeated.
Someone tried to escape.
"…And failed."
Silence answered him.
Then—
Footsteps.
Soft.
Controlled.
Measured.
A figure emerged from the gloom.
A pale boy.
Mask.
No emotion.
Eyes like glass.
"One minute."
Zoro frowned.
"…For what? My funeral?"
No answer.
The shinobi raised his hand.
A single seal.
The chains tightened instantly.
A surge of chakra shot through Zoro's body.
Violent.
Restricting.
Like liquid fire in his veins.
His muscles reacted.
Resisting.
Adapting.
"…Again?"
His breathing slowed.
Focus.
Not strength.
Feeling.
Flow.
For a moment—
He touched it.
The energy.
Clear.
Controlled.
Then—
Gone.
"Tch…"
The masked shinobi spoke.
"Subject shows abnormal adaptation."
Another voice.
From the deep shadows.
"Proceed."
More presence.
More eyes.
Watching.
Analyzing.
Not enemies.
Observers.
Zoro's gaze sharpened.
"…You're studying me like a lab rat."
Silence.
Then—
Pain.
Sharp.
Sudden.
The seal on his neck burned.
Stronger than before.
A sickly violet light pulsed.
Zoro's body locked.
His vision flickered.
Images flashed.
Not his memories.
Battlefields.
Eyes.
Red.
Spinning patterns.
"…What was that…?"
Gone.
Just like that.
Zoro exhaled heavily.
Cold sweat on his brow.
"…Tch."
Then—
A new presence.
Different.
Calm.
Empty.
Sai
"You survived."
Zoro looked at him.
"…You say that like it matters."
Sai tilted his head slightly.
"It does."
A pause.
"They usually break."
Zoro smirked faintly.
"…Then they're weak."
Sai observed him.
Carefully.
Quietly.
"As expected."
Silence returned.
But the air shifted.
The pressure in the room doubled.
Zoro felt it first.
His hand moved slightly toward his side—
"Don't."
Sai's voice was a warning.
Zoro stopped.
He looked up.
Staring through the stone ceiling.
"…I feel it."
A presence.
Above.
Far.
Watching.
Even here—
Underground—
It reached him.
Then—
For a single moment—
Their eyes met through the darkness.
Itachi Uchiha
Zoro froze.
Those eyes…
Calm.
Deep.
Unreadable.
Not like Orochimaru.
Not like Danzo.
Different.
Dangerous.
Not because of power—
But because of understanding.
Time slowed.
Just for a second.
Then—
Gone.
The presence vanished like a ghost.
Zoro exhaled slowly.
"…That guy… is no joke."
Sai spoke quietly.
"He's not your concern. Not yet."
Zoro glanced at him.
"…For now."
Silence.
The chains loosened.
Thud.
Slowly—
Zoro stood.
His body felt different.
Lighter.
Stronger.
More stable.
The chakra hadn't left.
It had settled.
The masked shinobi stepped back.
"Phase one complete."
Zoro frowned.
"…Phase one?"
Sai turned.
"Follow."
Zoro didn't move immediately.
His eyes drifted to the walls again.
The scratches.
The marks.
The silence of the dead.
"…Yeah…"
"…I get it."
Then—
He followed.
The corridor stretched endlessly.
Cold stone.
Silence.
Torches lined the walls.
But the flames—
Were wrong.
They flickered.
Unnaturally.
Zoro noticed.
"…What's wrong with the fire?"
Sai answered without turning.
"It reacts to chakra."
Zoro looked again.
The flame shifted—
Turning a violent crimson as he passed.
"…Huh."
No explanation.
Just proof.
(💧 Breadcrumbs)
They kept walking.
Deep into the earth.
From somewhere—
A scream.
Short.
Cut off.
Zoro's eyes moved.
"…Training?"
Sai replied.
"Correction."
A pause.
"Selection."
Zoro smirked.
"…Figures."
They stopped.
A massive door.
Heavy.
Covered in strange markings.
Seals.
Vibrating with power.
Pressure.
Sai placed his hand on the cold iron.
"From here…"
A pause.
"You either evolve into a weapon…"
The door creaked open.
The sound of heavy metal grinding.
Darkness inside.
Deeper than before.
"…or you disappear."
Zoro grinned.
A lethal, jagged expression.
His hand rested on his swords.
He felt the weight.
He felt the steel.
"…Now we're talking."
He stepped forward.
Into the abyss.
🌑 Deep Above
Danzō Shimura stood in silence.
Watching the pit.
"…Adaptation confirmed."
His eye narrowed.
"But not enough."
A shadow moved behind him.
Another presence.
Unknown.
"…Accelerate it."
Silence.
"…Even if it breaks his soul."
