📖 Chapter 4: The Eye of the Root
Silence ruled the forest.
Not natural silence.
Forced.
Cold.
Controlled.
Every movement… watched.
Every breath… measured.
At the center—
Roronoa Zoro stood still.
Hand resting on the hilt of Shusui.
Surrounded.
Masked figures.
No emotion.
No hesitation.
Only purpose.
"Move."
One stepped forward from the dark.
Zoro didn't.
He didn't even blink.
"…You're really annoying," he muttered.
His grip tightened.
The air around the blade trembled.
Just slightly.
But enough to make the leaves shake.
For a moment—
It felt like the forest would explode into steel.
"Stand down."
A voice.
Calm.
Old.
Heavy with the scent of a grave.
The masked shinobi froze instantly.
Like machines being turned off.
Zoro's eyes narrowed.
From the deepest shadows—
A man stepped forward.
Slow.
Measured.
Thud—Tap.
Thud—Tap.
The sound of a cane hitting the earth.
Bandages over one eye.
A heavy cloak hiding secrets.
Each step—
Authority.
Danzō Shimura.
Zoro clicked his tongue.
"…Another one," he growled.
"This place is full of freaks."
Danzo stopped.
A few steps away.
His visible eye studied Zoro.
Not his body.
Not his weapons.
Something deeper.
Something… that shouldn't exist here.
"…Interesting."
Zoro frowned.
The old man's gaze was like a snake.
"…What do you want?"
Silence.
The wind rattled the trees.
Then—
"Leave us."
The Root vanished.
In a blur of smoke and leaves.
Gone.
Even the presence of Orochimaru faded away.
Now—
Only two remained.
The air grew heavier.
Suffocating.
Danzo stepped forward.
One step.
Two.
"You don't belong to this world."
Silence.
Zoro didn't react.
But his eyes sharpened like a blade.
"…And you figured that out just now?"
Danzo's voice stayed calm.
"Your presence… is unstable."
A pause.
"…Yet adaptable."
Zoro smirked.
A jagged, dangerous expression.
"…You talk too much, old man."
Nothing moved.
The tension was a wire ready to snap.
Then—
"Serve me."
Zoro blinked once.
"…Hah?"
"Join Root."
"Become the shadow that protects the light."
A faint wind passed.
But the pressure stayed.
Zoro stared at him.
He thought of the sea.
He thought of his crew.
Then—
He looked at the old man.
"…No."
Simple.
Final.
Danzo didn't react.
He didn't show anger.
"Then you die here."
No shouting.
No explosion of chakra.
Just—
Certainty.
Zoro exhaled slowly.
A long, controlled breath.
"…You're not the first to say that."
His hand moved.
Gripped the hilt.
The steel sang softly.
Danzo raised a finger—
The forest changed.
Shadows shifted.
Presence returned.
Root.
Everywhere.
On branches.
Under the ground.
Behind every leaf.
Zoro's eyes moved.
Calculating.
One… ten… thirty.
"…Tch."
Too many.
Too precise.
This wasn't a fight.
This was a cage.
Danzo stepped closer.
"You adapt faster than any shinobi I've seen."
Another step.
"But without direction…"
A pause.
"You will break."
Zoro's jaw tightened.
He could feel the heat in his veins.
The new energy—
It was burning him.
"…Get to the point."
Danzo stopped.
Right in front of him.
"I will give you purpose."
Silence.
"I will give you power."
A pause.
"And I will let you survive."
Zoro didn't answer.
Inside—
His thoughts were sharp.
"This world…"
Stronger enemies.
Strange energy.
Unknown rules.
He needed to understand it.
He needed to control the storm in his chest.
"…Tch."
"…I don't follow anyone."
Danzo didn't blink.
"You misunderstand."
"I don't ask for loyalty."
A step closer.
"I take results."
Silence.
Zoro smirked.
"…You're annoying.
Then—
Slowly—
He lowered his sword.
The Root tensed.
"…Fine."
A pause.
"I'll stay. For now."
The air shifted.
The killing intent retreated.
Zoro's eyes locked on Danzo.
Cold.
Sharp.
"But listen carefully—"
"I'm not yours."
"If you try to chain me… I'll cut the hand that
holds the leash."
Silence.
Then—
For the first time—
Danzo smiled.
"…Of course."
A lie.
But useful.
He turned.
"Follow."
"From now on…"
"You are Root."
The shadows returned.
Watching.
Judging.
Zoro followed.
Not loyal.
Not obedient.
But ready.
Above the trees—
Watching—
Itachi Uchiha.
Silent.
Unreadable.
"…So that's your path."
His gaze shifted.
"…Or your mistake."
Then—
He disappeared into a flurry of crows.
🏯 Underground — Root Base
Darkness.
Cold stone.
The scent of damp earth and blood.
Zoro stepped inside.
His boots echoed in the silence.
His eyes moved.
Observing everything.
The seals on the walls.
The silence of the men.
"…Tch."
"…I hate places like this."
Voices echoed.
From the shadows.
"Subject confirmed."
"Begin integration."
Zoro frowned.
His hand went to his sword.
"…Subject?"
Too late.
A sharp pressure hit his neck.
A needle?
His body froze instantly.
Not fear.
Something else.
A seal.
Black ink spread across his skin.
Burning.
Like molten lead.
"…What the—"
[ Warning ]
[ Foreign Seal Detected ]
Zoro's eyes widened.
The interface in his mind flashed red.
"…Not now—"
The seal pulsed.
Violently.
The two forces clashed.
Inside him.
A war of energy.
His vision blurred.
The stone floor rushed up.
His body collapsed—
But before everything went dark—
He heard it.
A voice.
Cold.
Close.
"…Don't break too soon, swordsman."
"…We have much to learn from you."
Darkness.
