The Tremor
The people of Borealis stood silently in the streets.
The red glow beyond the northern mountains had disappeared.
But the ground continued to tremble.
Not violently.
Just enough to remind everyone that something had awakened.
Children were gathered by their families.
Engineers hurried toward the city's power stations.
The Borealis heroes moved toward the northern walls.
Kael Frostborn tightened his grip around his crystal axe.
"Is it coming?"
Aurelia Veyne looked toward the mountains.
"I don't know."
Seris Vale raised her Technomagik bow.
"We've never detected anything beyond the outer range."
Lirion studied the readings from a portable scanner.
"Because the mountains are interfering with the signal."
Dorion looked at him.
"Can you determine what it is?"
Lirion shook his head.
"Not yet."
Then Sorion spoke.
"It's not coming."
Everyone looked at him.
Sorion's hand rested over the bronze compass.
"It's already here."
The Sound Beneath the City
A deep vibration passed beneath their feet.
This time...
Sorion felt something else.
A heartbeat.
Not mechanical.
Not biological.
A memory.
He closed his eyes.
The streets disappeared.
Borealis transformed before him.
The people vanished.
The buildings became new.
The ice had not yet covered the city.
Ancient Orinthal citizens walked through the streets.
Children carried glowing crystal lamps.
Engineers transported Battery Cores.
Hunters returned from the northern wilderness.
The city was prosperous.
Alive.
Then Sorion heard a voice.
"Close the lower chambers."
Another voice answered.
"But the records are still inside."
"The records are exactly what must survive."
The vision ended.
Sorion opened his eyes.
"The Archive isn't the deepest part of Borealis."
Aurelia stared at him.
"What did you see?"
"Another chamber."
"Below the city."
Mirael Voss immediately shook her head.
"There is no lower chamber."
Sorion looked toward her.
"There was."
The Old Foundation
Lirion studied the city's original architectural plans.
He spread several maps across a table.
"The present city was built over an older foundation."
Mirael frowned.
"That's impossible."
Lirion pointed to several inconsistencies.
"Your current geothermal network has conduits that disappear beneath the central citadel."
"They don't connect to anything on the modern plans."
Aurelia looked at the maps.
"Those sections were sealed before our oldest surviving records."
Lirion smiled slightly.
"Then your oldest records aren't actually your oldest records."
Mirael stared at him.
"You're enjoying this."
"Very much."
Dorion sighed.
"Please save the argument for after we find the secret underground city."
The Descent
Aurelia led the expedition beneath the central citadel.
The passage was hidden behind a wall of reinforced crystal.
No door.
No handle.
Only a smooth surface covered in ancient symbols.
Sorion approached.
The symbols began glowing.
One after another.
Aurelia stepped back.
"That has never happened."
Sorion placed his hand against the wall.
A memory surged through him.
He saw people standing before the same entrance.
An engineer placed his hand against the wall.
The door opened.
Behind it...
hundreds of people carried memory crystals into the darkness.
A child asked:
"Why are we hiding them?"
The engineer answered:
"Because someday someone will come looking for the truth."
The vision faded.
Sorion opened his eyes.
"The door isn't waiting for a key."
Lirion understood.
"It's waiting for a memory."
The wall opened.
The Crystal Chamber
The passage descended far beneath Borealis.
The deeper they went...
the warmer the air became.
Geothermal energy flowed through ancient conduits.
Crystal lights awakened as they passed.
At the bottom stood an enormous circular chamber.
Its walls were covered with thousands upon thousands of memory crystals.
Some were blue.
Some silver.
Others had faded almost completely.
At the center stood a massive structure.
A crystalline sphere surrounded by bronze rings.
Lirion stopped walking.
"This isn't an archive."
Aurelia looked at him.
"What is it?"
"A memory engine."
The Memory Engine
Lirion approached the machine carefully.
"The entire city has been using fragments of this system."
"Your memory lamps."
"Your Archive."
"Your defensive systems."
"They're all connected to this."
Mirael stared at the machine.
"Why didn't our engineers know about it?"
"Because someone deliberately separated the systems."
Sorion stepped closer.
The machine immediately reacted.
Blue light filled the chamber.
Thousands of crystals awakened.
Memories appeared around them.
Battles.
Families.
Machines.
Cities.
Children.
Scientists.
Soldiers.
Farmers.
The history of Orinthal unfolded around them.
Then the images began changing.
The First War.
The machines turning against their creators.
Cities burning.
People fleeing.
But something was wrong.
The memories stopped.
A massive blank space appeared.
A section of history had been removed.
Sorion whispered:
"Someone erased this."
The Missing Years
The memory engine displayed a single designation:
THE OMISSION EVENT
Lirion stared at the words.
"That's impossible."
Dorion looked at him.
"What?"
"The Omnission War records describe the machines becoming corrupted."
"But this..."
He pointed toward the missing section.
"This suggests the corruption happened after something was deliberately removed."
Aurelia looked disturbed.
"Our ancestors always told us the machines simply failed."
Sorion shook his head.
"They didn't fail."
"They were changed."
The First Voice
A voice suddenly emerged from the memory engine.
Old.
Weak.
But unmistakably human.
"If this memory has awakened..."
The projection formed.
An elderly Orinthal woman appeared.
She wore the robes of an ancient scientist.
Behind her stood the first version of the Borealis Memory Engine.
"Then Borealis has finally opened its gates."
Aurelia stepped closer.
"Who are you?"
The projection could not answer.
It was only a recording.
The woman continued.
"Our civilization is approaching its greatest crisis."
"We discovered something beneath the Founder's Road."
Images appeared.
A massive underground structure.
Not a city.
Not a machine factory.
Something enormous.
Something whose scale could not be understood.
The woman continued:
"It was already here before Orinthal."
Everyone became silent.
The Thing Beneath Orinthal
The projection displayed an ancient map.
A network of tunnels stretched beneath the entire continent.
At their center...
a massive dark shape.
Lirion stared.
"That's underneath the lost cities."
The woman nodded within the recording.
"We believed we had discovered an ancient power source."
"We were wrong."
The image changed.
The dark structure appeared to react to the presence of the Orinthal machines.
Thousands of red signals spread outward.
The woman continued:
"It does not create machines."
"It influences them."
Sorion's eyes narrowed.
"Nihyros Nullis."
The chamber became silent.
Aurelia looked at him.
"You know that name?"
Sorion nodded.
"It's something I've encountered before."
He looked toward the memory.
"But this is older."
Much older.
The Reason Borealis Hid
The scientist's projection continued.
"We could not destroy it."
"So we created the Memory Network."
Images appeared of Borealis being constructed.
Its frozen defenses.
Its geothermal systems.
Its Battery Cores.
Its hidden archives.
Its citizens entering the city.
"Borealis was never designed simply as a refuge."
"It was designed as a witness."
The meaning became clear.
The city was not merely preserving people.
It was preserving memory.
The scientist looked directly toward the recording crystal.
"If the rest of Orinthal falls..."
"Remember."
"If the machines erase our history..."
"Remember."
"If even our own descendants forget..."
She paused.
"Remember for them."
The projection faded.
Aurelia's Truth
Aurelia stood completely still.
For generations, the people of Borealis had believed their ancestors hid because they feared the war.
Now they understood.
They had hidden because they had been entrusted with something far more important.
Their city was the keeper of the forgotten past.
Aurelia looked at Sorion.
"You can access these memories."
Sorion shook his head.
"Not all of them."
"Some are damaged."
"Some are incomplete."
"Some..."
He looked at the darkened crystals.
"...don't want to be remembered."
Aurelia frowned.
"Memories don't choose."
Sorion looked at her.
"People do."
The Corrupted Memory
Suddenly...
one crystal turned red.
Then another.
Then dozens.
Lirion shouted:
"Step back!"
The memory engine began shaking.
Red energy spread through the chamber.
The corrupted signal from the distant machine had reached the underground network.
Aurelia raised her spear.
"Can it enter the city?"
Lirion looked at the readings.
"It's already inside."
The lights went dark.
For three seconds...
there was nothing.
Then every crystal in the chamber displayed the same image.
A black mechanical figure.
Its face had no features.
Only a single red eye.
A message appeared.
MEMORY NETWORK LOCATEDRECOVERY PROTOCOL INITIATED
Sorion stepped forward.
"No."
The machine spoke.
"FORGOTTEN."
Sorion's eyes hardened.
"You don't get to decide what we remember."
The Battle Within Memory
The chamber exploded into light.
Sorion was pulled into the Memory Network.
He found himself standing inside a world made entirely of memories.
Around him were thousands of people.
Some were alive.
Some were long dead.
Some were only fragments.
Then the corrupted machines appeared.
They weren't physically attacking.
They were erasing.
A village disappeared.
A battlefield vanished.
A child's face faded.
A name disappeared from a memorial.
Sorion ran toward them.
"No!"
He touched the fading memories.
One returned.
Then another.
Then hundreds.
His power spread through the network.
Not creating memories.
Restoring them.
The corrupted signal fought back.
Sorion staggered.
He heard voices.
Thousands of them.
"Remember me."
"Remember us."
"Don't let them erase it."
Sorion stood again.
"I won't."
The Brothers' Strength
Outside the Memory Network, Lirion watched the machine's readings.
"It's fighting him."
Dorion stepped beside him.
"Can we help?"
Lirion nodded.
"We can stabilize the chamber."
Dorion immediately turned toward the others.
"Everyone!"
The expedition formed around the Memory Engine.
Ironhide warriors reinforced the crystal supports.
Iron Legion engineers stabilized the energy conduits.
Veilkeeper scouts protected the chamber.
Borealis heroes joined the defense.
Bardin's music echoed through the chamber.
The melody was soft.
Steady.
Human.
The Memory Engine responded.
Its blue light became stronger.
Sorion's signal stabilized.
The Forgotten Return
Inside the Memory Network...
Sorion saw the corrupted signal weakening.
One by one...
the erased memories returned.
Ash Hollow.
The Frozen Caravan.
The Forgotten Outpost.
Ancient cities.
Lost roads.
Forgotten families.
Forgotten heroes.
Forgotten promises.
The Founder's Road appeared beneath his feet.
It stretched beyond the horizon.
Then another road appeared.
And another.
Thousands of paths.
All leading toward places that had been forgotten.
Sorion finally understood.
The expedition wasn't simply traveling across a ruined civilization.
They were reconnecting its memories.
The Final Memory
One crystal remained.
A single memory.
Completely sealed.
Sorion approached it.
The surface displayed only one word:
THOMARION
Sorion stopped.
He did not know why the name appeared here.
He reached toward it.
Before he could touch it...
the crystal sealed itself again.
A voice whispered:
"Not yet."
Sorion stepped back.
"Who are you?"
No answer.
The Memory Network closed.
Back to Borealis
Sorion suddenly opened his eyes.
He was lying on the floor of the chamber.
Lirion knelt beside him.
"You're back."
Sorion breathed heavily.
"Yes."
Dorion offered his hand.
Sorion took it.
He stood.
The Memory Engine had returned to its calm blue glow.
Aurelia looked toward the sealed crystal.
"What did you see?"
Sorion looked at the name.
"Something about our past."
"Whose?"
Sorion hesitated.
"I don't know yet."
The New Signal
The city remained silent.
Then the northern communication tower activated.
A blue transmission appeared above it.
Not from Borealis.
From somewhere beyond the Frostfang Mountains.
Lirion quickly analyzed it.
"It's another city."
Aurelia stared at him.
"Another lost city?"
Lirion nodded.
"Very weak signal."
Sorion looked toward the horizon.
"Then someone else is still alive."
Aurelia smiled.
"For a thousand years..."
"We thought we were the last."
Dorion looked at the expedition.
"Then our journey continues."
Outside the city...
the Founder's Road began glowing beneath the snow.
One forgotten route after another awakened.
And somewhere far beyond Borealis...
another ancient city saw the light.
