Chapter 58 - Episode 58 : City That Forgot Its Name

The Signal Beyond Borealis

The morning after the Memory Engine awakened, Borealis was different.

Not because its walls had changed.

Not because its machines had become stronger.

Because its people had begun asking questions.

For generations, the citizens had believed they were the last surviving civilization of ancient Orinthal.

Now they knew they were not.

A signal had come from beyond the Frostfang Mountains.

Weak.

Broken.

But unmistakably alive.

Lirion stood before the projection table in the central engineering hall.

A blue map hovered above the surface.

"There's a city somewhere beyond the eastern ridge."

Eara Voss studied the coordinates.

"That region isn't on any modern map."

"The signal predates the current Borealis charts," Lirion answered.

Kael Frostborn crossed his arms.

"Then how do we know it's a city?"

Lirion enlarged the signal.

"Because something is transmitting from an ancient civic network."

Sorion stood quietly beside him.

He could feel it.

A faint memory.

A place that had once been important.

But every time he tried to grasp the image...

the memory slipped away.

"What is the city called?" Dorion asked.

Lirion looked at the display.

"I don't know."

Sorion closed his eyes.

Neither did the memory.

The Road That Should Not Exist

The expedition prepared to leave Borealis.

This time, several Borealis citizens volunteered to accompany them.

Not as soldiers.

As guides.

Aurelia selected a small group.

Kael Frostborn would lead the Borealis defenders.

Seris Vale would serve as scout.

Eara Voss would assist Lirion with the ancient technology.

Eryx Sol would remain in Borealis.

The city still needed protection.

Before leaving, the citizens gathered at the gate.

Some waved.

Others simply watched.

A young boy who had laughed at Bardin's frog exo-suit shouted:

"Make sure you bring back another city!"

Bardin raised his mechanical hand.

"We'll try to bring back its story."

The boy smiled.

The gates opened.

The expedition departed.

Across the Frozen Frontier

The journey eastward was unlike their previous travels.

There was no visible Founder's Road.

Only fragments appeared beneath the snow.

A bronze marker here.

A broken bridge there.

Occasionally, Sorion would sense an ancient path beneath the wilderness.

He would point.

The expedition would dig.

And another section of the forgotten road would emerge.

They traveled through valleys filled with frozen grass.

Across rocky plateaus.

Past abandoned geothermal stations.

Through narrow forests where the trees grew silver leaves.

Along the way, they encountered creatures that had adapted to the cold.

Frostback deer.

Crystal-winged birds.

Large white predators that avoided the expedition unless threatened.

The journey remained peaceful.

Until the ground moved.

The Ice Burrowers

A deep rumble passed beneath the caravan.

The Borealis hunters immediately raised their weapons.

The snow erupted.

Three enormous creatures burst from beneath the ground.

They resembled armored reptiles, each nearly the size of a crawler.

Their backs were covered in thick crystalline plates.

Their jaws snapped aggressively.

The horses and smaller animals panicked.

"Don't fire!" Kael shouted.

Seris studied the creatures.

"They're protecting a nest."

A second eruption revealed several small young hiding beneath the snow.

Dorion immediately understood.

"Move the wagons away."

The expedition slowly retreated.

One creature charged.

Dorion planted himself between it and the caravan.

The beast struck.

He blocked its jaws with his shield.

The impact drove him backward across the snow.

Ironhide warriors moved to help.

But Dorion raised his hand.

"Don't kill it!"

He slowly backed away.

The creature stopped.

Its aggression faded.

The expedition moved around the nesting ground.

The animals watched them disappear.

No unnecessary battle.

No trophies.

Just another lesson from the frontier.

The Ruined Observatory

By evening, the expedition discovered an ancient tower.

It stood on a rocky hill overlooking the eastern valley.

The upper half had collapsed.

But the central mechanism still functioned.

Eara climbed the tower with Lirion.

"This was an astronomical observatory."

Lirion activated the remaining systems.

A projection appeared.

Stars.

Planets.

Ancient Orinthal navigation routes.

Then...

a red marker appeared.

The same location as the mysterious signal.

Eara frowned.

"This wasn't a normal city."

Lirion looked at the records.

"No."

"It was an archive city."

Sorion heard the words.

"An archive?"

Eara nodded.

"According to this system, the city stored historical records for the northern territories."

Sorion looked toward the distant mountains.

"Then someone erased it."

The Valley Without a Name

The next morning, the expedition descended into a vast valley.

At first...

there appeared to be nothing.

No towers.

No walls.

No roads.

Only fields of pale grass.

Then Sorion stopped.

"Wait."

He stepped from his crawler.

The bronze compass pulsed.

He knelt and placed his hand upon the ground.

A Memory Resonance spread beneath him.

The empty valley transformed.

Buildings appeared.

A marketplace.

A library.

Workshops.

Homes.

A massive central tower.

Thousands of people walking through the streets.

Children playing beside fountains.

Engineers carrying memory crystals.

The city was enormous.

Sorion opened his eyes.

"It was here."

Lirion stared at the empty valley.

"Where?"

"Everywhere."

The vision vanished.

Only grass remained.

The Buried Gates

Sorion walked toward the center of the valley.

He stopped beside a patch of wildflowers.

"There."

The expedition dug.

Meters beneath the soil...

their tools struck metal.

A massive circular gate emerged from the earth.

Its surface was engraved with ancient symbols.

But the city's name had been deliberately removed.

Someone had scratched it away.

Eara examined the damage.

"This wasn't erosion."

Lirion nodded.

"Someone destroyed the name."

Dorion looked at Sorion.

"Why?"

Sorion touched the gate.

A whisper entered his mind.

"Forget us."

He opened his eyes.

"Because someone wanted the city forgotten."

The Gate Opens

Lirion connected a portable Battery Core to the ancient mechanism.

The gate shuddered.

Blue light traveled across its surface.

The earth trembled.

Then the enormous door opened.

A stairway descended into darkness.

The expedition entered.

The underground city was still there.

Buildings stood beneath massive protective domes.

Frozen citizens filled some chambers.

Not dead.

Suspended in ancient preservation systems.

Others had been awakened long ago.

Their descendants still lived in isolated underground districts.

But something was wrong.

They had no records of their origin.

No historical documents.

No ancient maps.

No city name.

Their oldest citizens knew only one thing:

They had always lived there.

The People Who Forgot

A group of citizens approached.

Their leader was an elderly woman wearing a simple gray coat.

"My name is Elara."

Dorion bowed.

"We come from Borealis."

The woman's expression changed.

"Borealis?"

She looked toward the others.

Some shook their heads.

Others whispered.

"We thought Borealis was a legend."

"It is real," Aurelia's representative answered.

Elara looked at Sorion.

"And who are you?"

"Sorion."

She repeated the name.

"Sorion..."

Then she smiled.

"At least you know yours."

Sorion frowned.

"What do you mean?"

Elara looked toward the empty emblem above the city's central hall.

"Most of us don't know ours."

A City Without a Name

The citizens explained what they knew.

Their ancestors had awakened generations after the First War.

The city had survived.

Their population had slowly grown.

Their machines still worked.

Their Battery Cells still powered their Technomagiks.

But every historical archive was damaged.

Every map had been erased.

Every civic emblem had been destroyed.

Even the oldest citizens had no memory of the city's name.

They called themselves simply:

The People Below.

Sorion felt something painful inside him.

"You survived..."

Elara nodded.

"But you don't know who you survived as."

The Broken Archive

Lirion and Eara entered the city's archive.

Almost everything was corrupted.

Memory crystals were cracked.

Data conduits had been severed.

Ancient books had been deliberately burned.

But one system remained.

A massive memory vault beneath the central tower.

Lirion stared at it.

"This system is still active."

Sorion approached.

The vault recognized him.

A blue light appeared.

Then...

a warning.

MEMORY ACCESS RESTRICTEDIDENTITY DATA REMOVEDRECOVERY IMPOSSIBLE

Lirion shook his head.

"That's what it says."

Sorion placed his hand on the crystal.

"But it's wrong."

Lirion looked at him.

"How do you know?"

Sorion smiled faintly.

"Because forgotten isn't the same as gone."

The Memory Battle

Sorion entered the memory network.

This time...

the memories were fragmented.

A child.

A mother.

A school.

A marketplace.

A soldier.

A wedding.

A festival.

A funeral.

Thousands of ordinary moments.

The city had not been defined by one great hero.

It had been defined by its people.

Sorion followed the fragments.

One memory led to another.

Then another.

Until he discovered a central memory.

A celebration.

Thousands of citizens gathered beneath a massive banner.

The city's name was written across it.

But the image was damaged.

Sorion couldn't read it.

He reached toward it.

A corrupted signal appeared.

Red.

Cold.

Familiar.

The same force that had attacked Borealis.

It tried to erase the memory.

Sorion fought back.

Not with violence.

With remembrance.

He restored the faces.

The buildings.

The music.

The banner.

Letter by letter...

the name returned.

The Name Returns

Sorion opened his eyes.

The memory crystal exploded with blue light.

Across the city...

ancient displays activated.

A forgotten symbol appeared.

Then the name.

LYRATHIS

The citizens stared.

Elara covered her mouth.

"Lyrathis..."

She repeated it.

A tear rolled down her cheek.

"Our city has a name."

People began crying.

Some laughed.

Others embraced one another.

An elderly man fell to his knees.

"My grandmother..."

He whispered.

"She told me we once had a name."

He touched the symbol.

"She was right."

Sorion stood quietly.

The city had not been restored by rebuilding a wall.

Or repairing a machine.

It had been restored by giving its people their identity back.

The City Remembers

The ancient systems awakened one by one.

Street lights returned.

Historical displays illuminated.

Old songs began playing through forgotten speakers.

Children gathered around their elders.

People stared at images of ancestors they had never known.

Lyrathis was alive.

Not as it had been.

But alive.

And incomplete.

Some memories remained lost.

Some districts were still sealed.

Some machines were beyond repair.

But now...

the citizens knew what they had been missing.

The Corrupted Machines Return

The celebration lasted only minutes.

A warning alarm sounded.

Red lights appeared beneath the city.

Eara looked toward Lirion.

"Something is entering the network."

Lirion's expression hardened.

"The same corruption."

The ground shook.

Ancient maintenance tunnels opened.

Corrupted machines emerged.

This time...

the citizens did not run blindly.

They knew their city.

They knew their streets.

They knew their defenses.

Elara raised an ancient weapon recovered from the archive.

"Then let's show them..."

She looked around at her people.

"...what Lyrathis remembers."

The Battle of Lyrathis

Citizens joined the expedition.

Borealis heroes fought beside Lyrathis defenders.

Ironhide warriors blocked the central avenue.

Serpent Wastes hunters climbed the rooftops.

Veilkeeper scouts moved through underground tunnels.

Sunscorched mechanics brought their fast mechanical crawlers into the city.

Lyrathis engineers activated ancient defense towers.

The battle became a storm of blue and red energy.

A corrupted machine charged toward a group of children.

A Lyrathis guardian intercepted it.

The two machines collided.

The guardian was damaged.

But it held.

Lirion reached the damaged machine.

"Can you still move?"

The guardian raised its weapon.

"This is my city."

It returned to battle.

Sorion's Choice

Deep beneath Lyrathis...

the corrupted signal attempted to erase the city's newly recovered name.

Sorion entered the Memory Network again.

The red corruption surrounded him.

"FORGET."

Sorion stood alone.

"No."

"MEMORY IS WEAK."

Sorion looked at the thousands of citizens above.

Children.

Parents.

Elders.

Warriors.

Engineers.

People who had just discovered their own history.

"Memory isn't weak."

He raised his hand.

"It is what remains when everything else is gone."

The blue light exploded outward.

The corrupted signal shattered.

A New Beginning

By sunset...

the battle was over.

The surviving corrupted machines were examined.

Repairable units were restored.

Those beyond recovery were carefully dismantled for Battery Cells, armor, Memory Relays, and usable components.

The Lyrathis citizens gathered in the central square.

For the first time in generations...

they spoke their city's name together.

"Lyrathis."

Again.

"Lyrathis."

And again.

The word echoed through the streets.

Sorion watched quietly.

Aurelia stood beside him.

"You gave them their name."

Sorion shook his head.

"No."

"They gave it back to themselves."

The Final Discovery

That night...

Lirion called the brothers to the restored archive.

A recovered map hovered above the table.

It showed Borealis.

Lyrathis.

Ash Hollow.

The Forgotten Outpost.

And dozens of other locations.

But one symbol was different.

It appeared beneath all of them.

A vast network.

A hidden civilization.

Lirion pointed toward the center.

"These cities weren't separate."

Dorion leaned closer.

"They were connected."

Sorion stared at the map.

His compass began pulsing.

Once.

Twice.

Then...

it pointed toward a region far beyond Lyrathis.

A location with no name.

No road.

No recorded settlement.

Only one ancient symbol.

The same symbol he had seen inside the Memory Engine beneath Borealis.

Sorion whispered:

"That's where the memories are coming from."

Lirion looked at him.

"What's there?"

Sorion watched the dark horizon.

"I don't know."

"But whatever it is..."

"...it remembers us."

Far beneath the forgotten continent...

something ancient opened its eyes.
