THE BRONZE PLATESEASON 5
The gates of Avarra opened.
Not with welcome.
With purpose.
KRRRRRRRRRNNNNNNG...
Massive gears turned beneath the road.
Metal plates shifted.
Steam erupted from underground vents.
The flying skiff remained suspended above the entrance platform while thousands of mechanical eyes watched from the surrounding towers.
No machine moved.
No worker spoke.
No human voice could be heard.
Only the sound of gears.
Only the sound of ancient mechanisms waiting.
Dorion kept his shield raised.
Bardin stood beside him, his hand resting near his lute.
Sorion watched the city carefully.
But Lirion...
Lirion was staring at the machines.
Not in fear.
Recognition.
His blue-black Noetic Fluid began moving beneath his skin.
Thin streams of living data traveled across his arms.
Lirion slowly stepped forward.
Dorion: "Lirion."
He stopped.
Dorion: "What are you doing?"
Lirion didn't answer immediately.
He was listening.
Not to the city.
To the machines.
Thousands of mechanical signals were moving through Avarra.
Encrypted.
Fragmented.
Ancient.
Some were so damaged that their communication patterns barely existed.
But Lirion could hear them.
A machine buried beneath the road suddenly emitted a weak pulse.
Then another.
Then another.
Lirion's eyes narrowed.
Lirion: "They're talking."
Bardin looked around.
Bardin: "I don't hear anything."
Lirion: "You wouldn't."
The machine intelligence spoke again.
"IDENTIFY AUTHORITY."
Lirion stepped toward the enormous mechanical guardian.
Lirion: "You already scanned us."
"IDENTIFY AUTHORITY."
Lirion raised his hand.
The Black Noetic Fluid flowed from his fingers.
It touched the metal platform.
For one second—
Nothing happened.
Then the entire platform illuminated.
WHUMMMMM.
A pulse traveled beneath the city.
One district.
Then another.
Then another.
The lights of Avarra began activating in sequence.
Dorion stared.
Dorion: "Lirion..."
Lirion remained still.
The machine guardian's eyes changed.
Its red scanning light disappeared.
A deep blue signal replaced it.
"MACHINE-LORD SIGNATURE DETECTED."
Silence.
Bardin slowly lowered his hand.
Bardin: "Machine Lord?"
Lirion looked at his own hand.
Lirion: "I think Avarra remembers that title."
The guardian stepped backward.
For the first time—
It bowed.
CLANG.
Its enormous head lowered.
"AUTHORITY RECOGNIZED."
The entire city reacted.
Thousands of machines turned toward the questors.
Some stopped working.
Others emerged from buildings.
Mechanical birds flew from towers.
Spider-like maintenance machines climbed across walls.
Massive construction units turned their heads.
One by one—
They faced Lirion.
"AUTHORITY RECOGNIZED."
"AUTHORITY RECOGNIZED."
"AUTHORITY RECOGNIZED."
The words echoed through Avarra.
Dorion slowly lowered his shield.
Dorion: "You're kidding."
Bardin smiled.
Bardin: "I believe our resident machine wizard just became the mayor."
Lirion shook his head.
Lirion: "No."
He looked deeper into the city.
Lirion: "Something is wrong."
THE BROKEN CITY
The gates opened farther.
The skiff descended onto the entrance platform.
The questors stepped into Avarra.
The city was enormous.
Factories rose like mountains.
Railways crossed the sky.
Mechanical elevators moved between districts.
Steam pipes ran through the streets.
But beneath all the machinery—
There was decay.
Machines were broken everywhere.
A mechanical worker lay motionless beside a wall.
A transport engine had collapsed across an abandoned railway.
Several maintenance units stood frozen in the middle of the street.
Some had missing limbs.
Others had cracked power cores.
One enormous machine had half its body buried beneath fallen metal.
Bardin looked around.
Bardin: "This city doesn't look like it's functioning."
Lirion walked toward the damaged machines.
Lirion: "It's functioning."
He touched the side of a broken maintenance unit.
Lirion: "But barely."
His Noetic Fluid entered the machine.
The damaged unit suddenly trembled.
KLIK.
Its head moved.
KRRR...
Its broken arm lifted.
Then stopped.
Lirion closed his eyes.
The machine's internal structure appeared inside his mind.
Broken memory circuits.
Damaged movement pathways.
Collapsed energy channels.
A corrupted command core.
Lirion opened his eyes.
Lirion: "Your command pathways are fractured."
The machine made a strange sound.
Not words.
A series of metallic pulses.
KLIK... KLIK... WHIRR...
Lirion understood.
His expression changed.
Lirion: "You're asking me to repair you."
The machine moved its head.
Yes.
Lirion placed his palm against its chest.
Black Noetic Fluid spread through its damaged systems.
Not replacing the machine.
Not controlling it.
Understanding it.
Repairing it.
One broken circuit reconnected.
Then another.
Then another.
ZZZZT.
The machine's internal core illuminated.
Its damaged arm suddenly moved.
Then its legs.
The machine stood.
Fully functional.
Bardin stared.
Bardin: "That machine was dead."
Lirion shook his head.
Lirion: "No."
He looked at the machine.
Lirion: "It was waiting for someone who could understand it."
The repaired machine lowered itself before Lirion.
THOOM.
It bowed.
Lirion looked uncomfortable.
Lirion: "You don't have to do that."
The machine responded in its strange mechanical language.
KRR-THA... VEL... ORU...
Lirion listened.
His eyes widened.
Lirion: "It says the city is dying."
Dorion stepped closer.
Dorion: "Can you understand all of them?"
Lirion looked across the streets.
Thousands of machines were beginning to move.
Some approached.
Others remained distant.
Some emitted sounds that humans could never understand.
Lirion listened.
Lirion: "Not all."
A pause.
Lirion: "But I can learn their language."
THE UNREPAIRABLE MACHINE
A sudden explosion shook the district.
BOOOOOOM!
Steam erupted from a nearby factory.
Machines scattered.
A huge mechanical body collapsed through the factory wall.
CRAAAAASH!
The questors turned.
A machine larger than a house crawled from the wreckage.
Its body was ancient.
Its armor was cracked.
Its central reactor had been split open.
Several mechanical limbs dragged uselessly behind it.
Bardin stared.
Bardin: "That one looks beyond repair."
Avarra's machine guardian spoke.
"UNIT: AVARRAN TITAN-07."
The guardian paused.
"STATUS: IRREPARABLE."
Lirion walked toward it.
Lirion: "Who decided that?"
The guardian answered.
"ALL REPAIR SYSTEMS FAILED."
Lirion continued forward.
Lirion: "Then they weren't the right systems."
He placed his hand against the Titan's damaged reactor.
The machine screamed.
Not with a human voice.
With metal.
With pressure.
With centuries of accumulated damage.
KRRRRRRRRRRAAAAAAAAAAA—
Sorion stepped backward.
Sorion: "Lirion!"
Lirion didn't move.
The Black Noetic Fluid spread across the Titan.
Its broken systems appeared within his perception.
The damage was enormous.
The reactor was fractured.
Its memory core was corrupted.
Its command structure had been partially erased.
But one signal remained.
A tiny pulse.
Still alive.
Lirion whispered:
Lirion: "You're still in there."
The Titan responded.
THUM.
Lirion smiled.
Lirion: "Good."
He pushed the Noetic Fluid deeper.
The repair began.
Metal sealed itself.
Broken pathways reconnected.
Energy conduits regenerated.
The damaged reactor began spinning.
WHOOOOOOM.
The Titan's eyes illuminated.
One.
Then two.
Then six.
Then twelve.
The enormous machine slowly stood.
Every machine in the district stopped.
The Titan looked directly at Lirion.
For several seconds—
Nothing happened.
Then it lowered its massive head.
THOOOOOM.
It bowed.
The Avarran guardian spoke.
"UNIT AVARRAN TITAN-07."
A pause.
"STATUS UPDATED."
Another pause.
"FUNCTIONAL."
Bardin laughed.
Bardin: "I think that answers the question."
Dorion looked at Lirion.
Dorion: "You just repaired something the entire city declared impossible."
Lirion looked toward the machine.
Lirion: "It wasn't impossible."
He looked at the thousands of damaged machines surrounding them.
Lirion: "They simply stopped listening."
THE LANGUAGE WITHOUT WORDS
Suddenly—
Hundreds of machines began speaking.
Not human language.
Not words.
Mechanical pulses.
Clicks.
Rotational tones.
Electrical frequencies.
The sound was overwhelming.
Dorion covered one ear.
Dorion: "What are they saying?"
Lirion remained completely still.
He was listening.
His eyes slowly closed.
The sounds separated inside his mind.
One machine.
Then another.
Then hundreds.
Thousands.
Lirion began understanding them.
Lirion: "They're afraid."
Sorion looked at him.
Sorion: "Machines can be afraid?"
Lirion opened his eyes.
Lirion: "Not like humans."
He looked toward the dark center of Avarra.
Lirion: "But they can recognize danger."
The machines continued communicating.
Lirion translated.
Lirion: "They say something has been waking up beneath the city."
A deep mechanical vibration passed through the ground.
BOOM.
Everyone felt it.
Another.
BOOM.
The repaired Titan turned toward the center of Avarra.
Its weapons activated.
KLIK-KLIK-KLIK.
Lirion immediately raised his hand.
Lirion: "Stand down."
The Titan froze.
Its weapons powered down.
KSSSSHHH...
Dorion stared.
Dorion: "It obeyed you."
Lirion looked at the Titan.
Lirion: "It recognized me."
The machine guardian spoke.
"MACHINE-LORD AUTHORITY CONFIRMED."
Lirion stepped forward.
Lirion: "Then listen to me."
Every machine in the district turned toward him.
Lirion: "No machine attacks unless I command it."
Silence.
Then—
Thousands of machines answered.
"COMMAND ACCEPTED."
THE LEVERAGE
The Avarran guardian approached.
Its mechanical voice became quieter.
"MACHINE-LORD."
Lirion looked at it.
Lirion: "Yes?"
"WHY HAVE YOU COME?"
Lirion glanced at Dorion.
Then Sorion.
Then Bardin.
Finally, he looked toward the massive mechanical city.
Lirion: "We're searching for the Lost Cities."
He paused.
Lirion: "And the Bronze Plate relics."
The machines became silent.
The guardian processed the information.
"BRONZE PLATE."
Lirion nodded.
Lirion: "Yes."
The guardian's eyes flickered.
"MEMORY RESONANCE."
Sorion stepped forward.
Sorion: "That's me."
The guardian scanned him.
But this time—
It did not reject him.
Instead, it said:
"MEMORY SIGNATURE COMPATIBLE."
Sorion looked surprised.
Lirion turned toward the guardian.
Lirion: "Take us to the center of Avarra."
The guardian did not move.
"ACCESS RESTRICTED."
Dorion raised an eyebrow.
Dorion: "So much for Machine Lord authority."
Lirion smiled slightly.
Lirion: "Not yet."
He turned toward the surrounding machines.
Broken machines.
Ancient machines.
Machines that had been silent for centuries.
Lirion raised his hand.
Lirion: "If Avarra wants us to leave—"
He looked at the broken machines.
Lirion: "Then it should repair itself first."
The machines began moving.
One by one.
Two by two.
Then hundreds.
They gathered around Lirion.
The damaged machines came first.
The silent machines followed.
The Titan stood behind him.
Lirion's Noetic Fluid spread through the network.
WHUMMMMM.
The entire district illuminated.
Avarra's ancient systems awakened.
The guardian's voice changed.
For the first time—
It sounded uncertain.
"MACHINE-LORD."
Lirion looked toward it.
"WHAT IS YOUR DEMAND?"
Lirion looked toward the center of the city.
Lirion: "Information."
The machines waited.
Lirion: "Show us what woke beneath Avarra."
A long silence followed.
Then the city's deepest systems activated.
Far below—
Something answered.
Not in human language.
Not in machine language.
In something older.
The streets shook.
The towers turned.
The railways stopped.
Every machine in Avarra suddenly faced the same direction.
The center.
The ancient core.
Then the guardian spoke.
"WARNING."
Lirion's expression hardened.
"THE MACHINE THAT REMEMBERS EVERYTHING HAS AWAKENED."
Sorion felt his silver-violet resonance flare.
He looked toward the darkness beneath Avarra.
Sorion: "I can feel it."
Bardin tightened his grip on his lute.
Dorion raised his shield.
Lirion's Noetic Fluid flowed around his arm.
The repaired Titan stepped beside him.
Thousands of machines formed behind the Machine Lord.
For the first time since entering Avarra—
The questors were no longer prisoners.
They had leverage.
They had the machines.
And Avarra had finally recognized its forgotten authority.
Lirion looked into the depths of the city.
Lirion: "Open the way."
The ancient gates beneath Avarra began to move.
KRRRRRRRRRRRRNNNNNNG...
A passage opened into darkness.
Something inside whispered through thousands of machines at once.
"MACHINE LORD..."
Lirion stopped.
The voice continued.
"YOU HAVE RETURNED."
Lirion's eyes widened.
Lirion: "Returned?"
The darkness swallowed the sound.
Then—
The gates opened completely.
And somewhere beneath Avarra...
A machine older than the city itself began to wake.
TO BE CONTINUED...
