Chapter 119 - Episode 119 : Machine Lord Returns

The ancient gates of Avarra had opened.

Beyond them—

Darkness.

Not empty darkness.

A darkness filled with movement.

Deep beneath the city, something enormous was reconnecting.

The questors stood before the broken Veil Gate.

Lirion remained at the front.

His Black Noetic Fluid moved slowly across his arm, responding to signals that traveled through the ancient machine network.

Behind him stood the machines of Avarra.

Iron Legion machines.

Former rogue machines that had chosen peace.

Maintenance machines.

Leviathan constructs that had survived the Ashen Seas.

And the human citizens who had spent generations keeping them alive.

For the first time, all of them were connected.

The Veil Gate Guardian lowered its head.

"WELCOME HOME, MACHINE LORD."

Lirion stared at the guardian.

Those words echoed through him.

Not because they sounded impressive.

Because he understood what they meant.

The guardian had not simply recognized his title.

It had recognized the network authority attached to it.

The same authority he had earned in the Ashen Seas.

The same network that had once answered his commands beneath the ocean.

The same network through which he had acquired the Black Noetic Fluid.

The same network that had carried his commands across machines that had never spoken a human language.

Lirion slowly raised his hand.

The guardian responded.

A blue-black signal passed from his hand into the Veil Gate.

WHUMMMMM...

The entire structure illuminated.

Then—

A voice emerged from the darkness.

Not from the guardian.

Not from Avarra.

From the network itself.

"MACHINE LORD IDENTIFIED."

Lirion's eyes narrowed.

Another voice answered.

"RETURN CONFIRMED."

Then another.

"NETWORK AUTHORITY RESTORED."

Then thousands of machines began responding.

"MACHINE LORD."

"MACHINE LORD."

"MACHINE LORD."

The voices overlapped.

Some were mechanical.

Some were distorted.

Some were little more than pulses of electrical information.

Others were ancient machine languages that humans could never understand.

Yet Lirion understood them.

Every signal.

Every pattern.

Every request.

Every warning.

He closed his eyes.

The network opened inside his mind.

THE LEVIATHAN NETWORK

Lirion suddenly saw the Ashen Seas.

Black water.

Storms.

Ancient machines beneath the waves.

Leviathan constructs moving through the darkness.

Thousands of mechanical systems connected through invisible communication pathways.

He remembered the first time the network had accepted him.

He remembered the Black Noetic Fluid.

He remembered the machines that had followed his commands.

Machines that had never spoken to humans.

Machines that humans believed were nothing more than broken weapons.

But Lirion had listened.

He had understood.

And they had answered.

The memory vanished.

Lirion opened his eyes.

Sorion stood beside him.

Sorion: "You saw something."

Lirion nodded.

Lirion: "The network."

Sorion looked at the Veil Gate.

Sorion: "It's bigger than Avarra."

Lirion: "Much bigger."

Dorion stepped closer.

Dorion: "How far does it reach?"

Lirion looked toward the enormous city.

Lirion: "The Ashen Seas."

He looked at the Iron Legion machines.

Lirion: "The Iron Legion."

He looked at the peaceful machines living among the citizens.

Lirion: "The machines that escaped the wars."

Finally, he looked toward the broken Veil Gate.

Lirion: "And Avarra."

Bardin frowned.

Bardin: "So this city has been connected to your network all along?"

Lirion shook his head.

Lirion: "Not completely."

He pointed toward the broken Veil Gate.

Lirion: "The connection was damaged."

Bardin looked at the ruined structure.

Bardin: "And now?"

Lirion's Black Noetic Fluid glowed.

Lirion: "Now it's waking up."

THE CITY THAT WAITED

The human citizens began gathering near the Veil Gate.

They weren't afraid.

They had seen machines respond to Lirion.

They had watched him repair what their engineers had declared impossible.

But one elderly technician stepped forward.

His clothes were covered with oil and metal dust.

He looked at Lirion.

Technician: "We've maintained that gate for generations."

Lirion looked at him.

Lirion: "You knew it was connected to the Leviathan Network?"

The technician nodded.

Technician: "We knew something was connected."

He looked toward the broken gate.

Technician: "We never understood what."

Another citizen stepped forward.

Citizen: "The machines kept telling us to wait."

Lirion looked at her.

Lirion: "What did they say?"

She hesitated.

Citizen: "They kept repeating one message."

Lirion waited.

The woman looked toward the Veil Gate.

Citizen: "The Machine Lord will return."

Silence.

Lirion's expression changed.

For years—

The network had been waiting.

Not for a replacement.

Not for another commander.

For him.

Bardin lowered his voice.

Bardin: "How long?"

The technician answered.

Technician: "Since the Veil Gate broke."

Lirion looked at the ancient structure.

Lirion: "How long ago?"

The technician gave him the number.

Lirion said nothing.

The realization was heavier than he expected.

The network had been waiting all this time.

MACHINES OF PEACE

A machine approached.

Its body was scarred.

Its weapons had been removed.

Its armor had been repurposed into agricultural equipment.

It stopped before Lirion.

KLIK... KRRR...

Lirion listened.

Then smiled.

Lirion: "You don't want to fight."

The machine nodded.

Dorion looked at it.

Dorion: "That was a war machine?"

The technician answered.

Technician: "One of the worst."

The machine lowered its head.

Technician: "But it came here voluntarily."

Lirion placed his hand on its shoulder.

Lirion: "You chose peace."

The machine emitted a soft mechanical tone.

Lirion understood.

Lirion: "And you want to remain here."

The machine nodded.

Lirion turned toward the others.

Lirion: "That's what makes Avarra different."

He looked across the city.

Lirion: "Machines aren't simply controlled here."

He looked toward the human citizens.

Lirion: "They're citizens."

The technician smiled.

Technician: "That's what we believe."

Dorion nodded.

Dorion: "Then they have something worth protecting."

Lirion looked toward the enormous city.

Lirion: "Yes."

THE IRON LEGION CONNECTION

A heavy metallic march echoed through the streets.

THOOM.

THOOM.

THOOM.

Dorion turned.

Several Iron Legion machines approached.

Their armor carried the insignia of his Legion.

Dorion stepped forward.

The machines immediately recognized him.

One lowered its weapon.

Another activated its identification system.

"IRON LEGION COMMAND SIGNATURE."

Dorion raised his shield.

The Orion Star Crest illuminated.

"COMMANDER IDENTIFIED."

The machines stood at attention.

Dorion looked at Lirion.

Dorion: "So the network doesn't erase individual command."

Lirion shook his head.

Lirion: "No."

He looked at the machines.

Lirion: "It connects them."

Dorion smiled.

Dorion: "Then we're not fighting over authority."

Lirion: "We're working together."

The Iron Legion machines turned toward the broken Veil Gate.

They began helping the Avarran machines stabilize its outer structure.

The city became a coordinated system.

Human workers directed repairs.

Iron Legion machines moved heavy components.

Leviathan machines supplied energy.

Avarran machines repaired the ancient mechanisms.

And Lirion—

Lirion communicated with all of them.

THE LANGUAGE OF MACHINES

The deeper Lirion connected to the network, the more languages he heard.

One machine spoke in rotating gear patterns.

Another communicated through electrical pulses.

Another used pressure changes through hydraulic systems.

A Leviathan machine transmitted information through sonar frequencies.

An ancient Avarran machine used a language built from magnetic fluctuations.

To humans—

It was noise.

To Lirion—

It was conversation.

His eyes closed.

Lirion: "I hear you."

The machines responded.

He translated their signals.

Lirion: "Some of you are damaged."

A pulse.

Lirion: "Some of you are afraid."

Another pulse.

Lirion: "Some of you remember the wars."

A long mechanical tone.

Lirion lowered his head.

Lirion: "And some of you remember what happened before them."

Sorion looked at him.

Sorion: "What are they telling you?"

Lirion opened his eyes.

His expression had become serious.

Lirion: "They're telling me that something below Avarra is older than the network."

The ground shook.

BOOOOOOM.

Everyone became silent.

THE UNREPAIRABLE

A massive machine suddenly collapsed near the Veil Gate.

CRAAAAASH!

Several citizens ran toward it.

The machine was enormous.

Its central reactor was shattered.

Its memory core had been damaged.

Its mechanical spine was broken.

The technician shook his head.

Technician: "That one cannot be repaired."

Lirion walked toward it.

Technician: "We've tried for years."

Lirion looked at the machine.

Lirion: "Then you tried repairing the machine."

The technician frowned.

Technician: "What?"

Lirion placed his hand against the damaged chassis.

Lirion: "I'm going to talk to it."

The Black Noetic Fluid entered the machine.

Nothing happened.

Then—

A tiny signal.

...KLIK...

Lirion smiled.

Lirion: "There you are."

The machine responded.

Its signal was weak.

Almost impossible to detect.

Lirion followed it through the broken system.

Lirion: "You lost your memory core."

A pulse.

Lirion: "But you kept your identity."

Another pulse.

Lirion began repairing it.

Not forcing it.

Listening.

Understanding.

Reconnecting.

One circuit.

Then another.

Then another.

ZZZZZZT.

The machine's core activated.

Its eyes opened.

The citizens gasped.

The machine slowly stood.

The technician stared.

Technician: "We couldn't do that."

Lirion looked at him.

Lirion: "Because you couldn't hear it."

The machine lowered its head toward Lirion.

Lirion listened.

A mechanical phrase entered his mind.

He smiled.

Lirion: "It says it remembers you."

The technician froze.

His eyes filled with emotion.

He placed his hand against the machine.

Technician: "You remember me?"

The machine gently touched his shoulder.

Avarra became silent.

Then the technician laughed.

The machine had returned.

THE VEIL GATE GUARDIAN

The Veil Gate Guardian approached Lirion.

Its enormous body lowered.

This time—

It opened its chest completely.

A Leviathan interface appeared.

"MACHINE LORD."

Lirion looked at it.

"THE NETWORK AWAITS YOUR COMMAND."

Lirion looked behind him.

Machines.

Humans.

Iron Legion warriors.

Peaceful rogue machines.

Leviathan constructs.

All waiting.

But Lirion did not raise his hand to command them.

Instead, he said:

Lirion: "I don't own you."

The machines remained silent.

Lirion: "If you choose to follow me, it must be because you choose to."

The Leviathan Network pulsed.

One machine stepped forward.

Then another.

Then hundreds.

Then thousands.

"WE CHOOSE."

Lirion lowered his head.

The Veil Gate Guardian answered:

"NETWORK CONSENSUS CONFIRMED."

The broken Veil Gate began glowing.

Its ancient systems activated.

The structure began repairing itself.

KRRRRRRRRRRNNNNNG...

Lirion raised his hand.

This time—

The entire network responded.

Not because it was forced.

Because it recognized him.

The Machine Lord had returned.

THE DOOR BELOW AVARRA

The Veil Gate opened.

Beyond it was a massive underground passage.

Ancient machinery covered the walls.

At the end—

A single enormous structure waited.

Sorion felt his resonance immediately.

His silver-violet aura appeared.

Sorion: "Something is down there."

Lirion looked at him.

Lirion: "The machines know it."

Dorion tightened his grip on his shield.

Dorion: "Friend or enemy?"

Lirion listened.

Thousands of machines became silent.

Then one message reached him.

A message from the deepest part of the Leviathan Network.

Lirion's expression changed.

Lirion: "Neither."

Bardin frowned.

Bardin: "Then what is it?"

Lirion looked into the darkness.

Lirion: "It's the reason they were waiting for me."

The Veil Gate Guardian slowly turned toward the passage.

Its voice became almost fearful.

"THE ORIGINAL MACHINE IS AWAKE."

A deep vibration came from below.

BOOOOOOM.

The machines of Avarra lowered themselves.

The Iron Legion prepared.

The peaceful machines moved the human citizens away from the entrance.

Lirion stepped forward.

Sorion joined him.

Dorion raised his shield.

Bardin held his lute.

The Machine Lord had returned to his domain.

But beneath Avarra—

Something had been waiting for him too.
