Chapter 120 - Episode 120 : Originals

THE BRONZE PLATESEASON 5

The Inactive Veil Gate

The passage beneath Avarra descended farther than any of the questors had expected.

Ancient metal covered its walls. Some sections belonged to the city's earliest mechanical architecture, while others carried unmistakable patterns from the Leviathan Network of the Ashen Seas.

Lirion recognized them.

The same network he had commanded beneath the ocean had survived here, hidden beneath generations of construction.

Now its signals flowed through the passage.

Not as an army preparing for battle.

As a civilization waking from a long silence.

Behind the questors, the Veil Gate Guardian, Vaelkor, followed with heavy, measured steps. Its bronze-and-steel body was marked by centuries of damage, but blue light had returned to the lines across its chest.

Master Technician Orven Krail accompanied them, carrying a compact diagnostic instrument.

He had spent most of his life maintaining Avarra's machines.

Yet he had never been permitted to enter this passage.

Orven: "I've repaired engines older than our oldest records. I've rebuilt machines everyone else abandoned. But this place has always been sealed."

Dorion glanced at the walls.

Dorion: "Who sealed it?"

Orven shook his head.

Orven: "That's what we never discovered."

Bardin looked toward the darkness ahead.

Bardin: "An underground passage nobody can enter, a machine network that has been waiting for its lord, and a sealed chamber beneath an ancient city."

He adjusted his lute.

Bardin: "I suppose we're about to discover why nobody wanted visitors."

Lirion barely heard him.

His Black Noetic Fluid had begun responding to something farther below.

A sequence of blue-black signals crossed his fingers.

Then stopped.

Then repeated.

Lirion raised his hand.

Lirion: "Wait."

Everyone halted.

A faint mechanical sound came from the walls.

KLIK... KLIK... KLIK...

Lirion listened.

The sounds repeated in an unfamiliar pattern.

Not a command.

Not a warning.

A question.

He answered through his Black Noetic Fluid.

The wall illuminated.

A second signal emerged.

Lirion's expression changed.

Sorion: "What did it say?"

Lirion: "It asked whether the Machine Lord had returned alone."

Dorion looked at him.

Dorion: "And what did you tell it?"

Lirion turned toward the others.

Lirion: "That I brought friends."

For the first time, Vaelkor made a sound that resembled a low, metallic laugh.

Vaelkor: "THE NETWORK HAS RECORDED YOUR ANSWER."

The wall separated.

Beyond it lay an enormous chamber.

And at its center—

The inactive Veil Gate.

The Portal That Could Not Open

The structure was unlike the ordinary gates of Avarra.

It did not lead into another street.

It was not an entrance to a building or a passage between districts.

The Veil Gate was a portal designed to connect distant locations.

Its circular frame rose several stories above the chamber floor. Twelve mechanical supports surrounded a central ring, each carrying intricate channels for energy and memory resonance.

But the portal was broken.

Several sections of the ring had separated. Its crystalline conduits were dark, and a deep fracture ran through the central resonance mechanism.

Beyond the frame, there was no view of another place.

Only an empty, black surface.

Orven approached the control platform.

His instrument immediately filled with warning symbols.

Orven: "The energy system is damaged. The connection channels are incomplete."

He examined the readings again.

Orven: "Even if I restore the power, the gate won't open."

Lirion looked at the structure.

Lirion: "Because it isn't only a power problem."

Vaelkor stepped beside them.

Vaelkor: "CORRECT."

The Guardian raised one arm toward the fractured ring.

Vaelkor: "THE VEIL GATE'S MEMORY RESONANCE IS INCOMPLETE."

Sorion felt something stir inside his chest.

A faint silver-violet light appeared around his fingers.

He approached the control platform.

The moment he came near, the broken ring emitted a low pulse.

THUM.

Sorion stopped.

Another pulse followed.

THUM.

The light around his hand intensified.

Sorion: "It recognizes something."

Vaelkor turned toward him.

Vaelkor: "YOUR RESONANCE CAN RESTORE THE MISSING MEMORY PATHWAYS."

Sorion looked at the inactive portal.

Sorion: "Can I activate it?"

Vaelkor: "NOT ALONE."

The Guardian turned toward Lirion.

Vaelkor: "THE MACHINE NETWORK MUST FIRST RESTORE THE GATE'S MECHANICAL CONNECTIONS."

Then it looked back at Sorion.

Vaelkor: "THE MEMORY RESONANCE MUST BE RESTORED AFTERWARD."

Lirion nodded.

The distinction was clear.

His authority could reconnect the machines.

Orven and Avarra's technicians could help repair the physical structure.

But the portal's missing memory resonance required Sorion.

Without all three contributions, the Veil Gate would remain inactive.

Dorion rested his shield against his shoulder.

Dorion: "Then we know what we have to do."

Sorion stared into the black surface.

Sorion: "Not yet."

He could feel something on the other side.

Not a voice.

Not a person.

A memory waiting to be reached.

Sorion: "First, I want to know where this gate leads."

Vaelkor remained silent.

Then the Guardian answered.

Vaelkor: "TO THE ORIGINALS."

The People Before Avarra

Orven turned sharply.

Orven: "The Originals?"

Vaelkor's eyes illuminated.

Vaelkor: "THE FIRST INHABITANTS OF AVARRA."

Silence filled the chamber.

The human citizens above had always believed Avarra was founded by engineers who discovered an abandoned machine complex and gradually built a civilization around it.

Their oldest surviving records mentioned mysterious structures beneath the city.

But no reliable record identified who had constructed them.

Orven stared at Vaelkor.

Orven: "You're telling us that Avarra existed before the city itself?"

Vaelkor: "THE CITY WAS BUILT ABOVE THEIR DOMAIN."

Orven looked at the ancient Veil Gate.

Orven: "Then who were they?"

The Guardian's head lowered slightly.

Vaelkor: "THE ORIGINALS WERE THE FIRST PEOPLE TO ESTABLISH THIS MACHINE SANCTUARY."

Dorion: "Were they human?"

Vaelkor did not answer immediately.

Instead, the chamber's walls illuminated.

A projection appeared above the floor.

It showed Avarra as it had existed in the distant past.

There were no factories.

No crowded streets.

No elevated railways.

Instead, enormous structures surrounded a central sanctuary. Humans worked beside machines with forms unlike anything the questors had seen.

Some machines possessed complex bodies capable of independent movement.

Others were integrated into buildings, energy systems, and transportation networks.

At the center of the image stood several figures.

Some appeared human.

Others were clearly mechanical.

But they all stood together.

Orven stepped closer.

Orven: "They lived together."

Vaelkor answered.

Vaelkor: "THE ORIGINALS BELIEVED THAT A MACHINE'S PURPOSE WAS NOT LIMITED TO ITS CREATION."

The projection changed.

A damaged war machine approached the sanctuary.

The Original inhabitants repaired it.

The machine remained.

Other machines followed.

Some had fought in wars.

Others had been abandoned by their creators.

Some had never known a peaceful home.

The Originals accepted them, repaired them, and allowed them to choose whether to remain.

Dorion watched the image.

Dorion: "They gave machines a choice."

Vaelkor: "YES."

Lirion's expression grew thoughtful.

He looked at the peaceful rogue machines who had chosen to live in Avarra.

Their existence was not an accident.

Their way of life was an inheritance.

Avarra had preserved the principle long after the Originals disappeared.

Machines could serve without being enslaved.

They could protect without being weapons.

And they could choose peace.

Lirion: "The people of Avarra didn't invent this way of life."

Vaelkor turned toward him.

Vaelkor: "THEY PRESERVED IT."

Orven lowered his diagnostic instrument.

For the first time, the city's history began to make sense.

Why the Originals Waited

The projection changed again.

The ancient sanctuary appeared, but this time its central Veil Gate was damaged.

The Original inhabitants stood around it.

The same ring.

The same twelve mechanical supports.

The same central resonance mechanism.

The same design that remained beneath Avarra.

A figure approached the gate and placed a hand against its surface.

A faint light appeared.

Then faded.

The portal remained closed.

Sorion: "They couldn't activate it either?"

Vaelkor: "THE GATE LOST ITS MEMORY RESONANCE DURING AN ANCIENT DISRUPTION."

The image showed the Original inhabitants attempting to restore the portal.

They repaired its machinery.

They restored its power.

But the gate never opened.

Eventually, they began dismantling their operations around it.

Some remained behind to maintain the sanctuary.

Others passed through ordinary passages into the world above.

Their civilization changed.

Generations came and went.

The city expanded.

The Originals faded from public memory.

Yet the Veil Gate remained.

Waiting.

Orven: "Why didn't they repair the resonance?"

Vaelkor turned toward Sorion.

Vaelkor: "THE REQUIRED RESONANCE WAS LOST."

Sorion understood.

The machine network could preserve information, but preserving a damaged memory pattern was not the same as restoring its original resonance.

Lirion could repair the machinery.

Orven could maintain its physical systems.

Neither could replace the missing memory signature.

That was why the gate had remained inactive.

That was why its machinery had waited for a different kind of ability.

And that was why Sorion's presence mattered.

Sorion: "Then the gate wasn't waiting for a key."

Vaelkor answered.

Vaelkor: "IT WAS WAITING FOR ITS MEMORY TO BE RESTORED."

The Machine Lord's Promise

Lirion approached the Veil Gate.

The Black Noetic Fluid flowed from his hand into the surrounding interface.

Immediately, the network responded.

Ancient conduits illuminated.

Broken mechanisms began turning.

Several disconnected sections of the ring moved into alignment.

KRRRRRRNNNNG...

Orven watched the readings.

Orven: "The network is reconnecting the entire structure!"

Lirion remained focused.

He could feel the machine systems beneath his feet.

The Leviathan Network was not merely answering commands.

It was restoring a connection that had been severed for generations.

A damaged support rose into place.

A second followed.

The gate's mechanical structure gradually stabilized.

Then the system stopped.

A warning appeared across Orven's instrument.

MEMORY RESONANCE: ABSENT.

The Veil Gate remained inactive.

Lirion withdrew his hand.

Lirion: "That's as far as the network can take it."

Sorion stepped forward.

Sorion: "Then it's my turn."

Lirion looked at him.

Lirion: "Don't force it. Find the missing pathway."

Sorion nodded.

He placed his palm against the central resonance mechanism.

Silver-violet light spread through the fractured channels.

At first, nothing happened.

Then he felt it.

A memory that did not belong to him.

A place.

A sanctuary.

A distant horizon beneath an unfamiliar sky.

And people waiting beyond the portal.

Sorion closed his eyes.

He did not try to control the memory.

He followed its balance.

His resonance moved through the broken pathways, searching for the pattern that had once connected the gate to its destination.

A fractured signal appeared.

Then another.

He brought them into alignment.

THUM.

The Veil Gate responded.

The black surface trembled.

THUM.

A thin line of silver-violet light crossed its center.

Orven stepped backward.

Orven: "The resonance is returning!"

Sorion gritted his teeth.

The memory was enormous.

He could feel the distance between the two locations, the history embedded in the portal, and the countless years during which its connection had remained incomplete.

But he did not stop.

He restored the final pathway.

WHUMMMMMMMMM.

The central ring illuminated.

For one moment, the portal revealed a distant landscape.

A vast sanctuary stood beneath a pale sky.

Ancient towers rose beyond it.

And figures waited before the gate on the other side.

Then the image disappeared.

The portal returned to darkness.

Sorion staggered.

Dorion caught his arm.

Dorion: "Sorion!"

Sorion took a breath.

Sorion: "The memory is restored."

Vaelkor's eyes burned with blue light.

Vaelkor: "MEMORY RESONANCE CONFIRMED."

Lirion examined the network.

Lirion: "The gate is connected."

Orven looked at the inactive surface.

Orven: "Then why isn't it open?"

Vaelkor answered quietly.

Vaelkor: "BECAUSE IT IS NOT YET ACTIVATED."

Sorion looked at the portal.

He understood the difference.

The gate could now remember its destination.

But remembering a destination was not the same as opening a passage to it.

The final activation would require the correct sequence, sufficient power, and a deliberate command.

For now, the Veil Gate remained closed.

But it was no longer a dead machine.

It was a portal that could be opened.

The Ones Who Were Waiting

A signal passed through the network.

Lirion turned immediately.

The Leviathan Network was transmitting a message from beyond the gate.

It was not an ordinary machine command.

It carried a signature he had never encountered in the Ashen Seas.

Ancient.

Complex.

Deliberate.

The Veil Gate Guardian lowered its head.

Vaelkor: "THE ORIGINALS HAVE RECEIVED THE RESTORED RESONANCE."

Orven looked toward the portal.

Orven: "They know we're here?"

Vaelkor: "THEY KNOW THE GATE REMEMBERS."

A faint light appeared in the center of the ring.

The portal remained inactive, but a message formed across the surface.

TO THE MACHINE LORD WHO RETURNED.

Lirion stepped forward.

Another line appeared.

WE HAVE KEPT OUR PROMISE.

Lirion's expression hardened.

Lirion: "What promise?"

The answer came slowly.

WHEN THE NETWORK FOUND ITS LORD,

AND THE GATE REMEMBERED ITS WAY,

THE ORIGINALS WOULD SPEAK AGAIN.

Bardin looked at Sorion.

Bardin: "They weren't waiting for someone to rescue them."

Sorion shook his head.

Sorion: "They were waiting for the conditions that would allow them to communicate."

Lirion stared at the message.

The Leviathan Network had preserved his authority.

The machines of Avarra had kept the broken gate under observation.

The human citizens had maintained the sanctuary without knowing its complete purpose.

And Sorion had restored the missing memory resonance.

Each had played a different role.

No single ability could have accomplished everything.

The portal remained inactive, but the path was no longer lost.

Then a final message appeared.

MACHINE LORD.

THE ORIGINALS REMEMBER YOU.

Lirion frowned.

Lirion: "They have never met me."

Vaelkor turned toward him.

Vaelkor: "THEY REMEMBER THE NETWORK THAT CHOSE YOU."

The chamber fell silent.

Beyond the inactive Veil Gate, a figure stepped toward the distant side of the portal.

Its outline appeared briefly through the restored resonance.

A human silhouette.

Beside it stood a mechanical figure whose body carried symbols older than Avarra itself.

Then the image faded.

One final transmission reached Lirion.

"WE DID NOT WAIT FOR YOU TO OPEN OUR DOOR."

A pause.

"WE WAITED FOR YOU TO UNDERSTAND WHY IT MUST BE OPENED."

The signal ended.

Lirion lowered his hand.

Sorion looked at the Veil Gate.

Dorion tightened his grip on his shield.

Bardin's fingers rested motionless against his lute.

And Orven Krail, Master Technician of Avarra, finally understood that the city's greatest secret was not a machine waiting to be repaired.

It was a civilization waiting to be heard.

The Veil Gate stood silent.

Inactive.

But its memory had returned.

And beyond it, the Original Owners of Avarra were waiting to explain why their world had been separated from this one.
