Chapter 37 - Chapter 30 — Lady of Nightvale

The Nightvale Spire rose above the upper districts like a monument carved from shadow.

Where the other Great Families built towers meant to impress, Nightvale built to observe. The Spire absorbed the surrounding light, its dark metallic architecture layered in smooth, deliberate tiers that climbed into the upper atmosphere. Thin silver lines traced the structure like faint veins, glowing softly against the black surface.

From below, the Spire appeared elegant.

From within, it felt watchful.

The upper corridors were silent. Dim lighting ran along the floors and walls, leaving the ceilings in shadow. The polished black surfaces reflected faint silver light as attendants moved quietly between secured doors.

Nothing in Nightvale moved without purpose.

At the highest level of the Spire, a wide observation chamber overlooked Earth below.

The view stretched across endless city lights. Air traffic moved between towers in quiet streams, their engine trails glowing faintly in the night. The horizon shimmered where the atmosphere met the darkness of space.

Standing before the glass was Lady Seraphine Nightvale.

Her posture was composed, hands resting behind her back. The faint silver lining of her attire reflected the distant city lights, but her expression remained unreadable.

She stood motionless.

Watching.

A quiet chime sounded behind her.

"Enter."

The doors slid open silently.

An attendant stepped forward, bowing slightly.

"My Lady."

Seraphine did not turn.

"Report."

The attendant activated a data shard. A holographic projection unfolded in the dim air beside her, displaying academy insignias, deployment logs, and medical reports.

"Academy deployment anomaly. Gamma Squad separated during planetary assignment. Communications lost for approximately twelve hours."

Seraphine remained still.

"Unknown world?"

"Yes, my Lady. No registry match."

The projection shifted.

"God-tier entity encountered."

Seraphine's gaze shifted slightly.

"Casualties?"

"No fatalities."

A brief pause followed.

"Castiel Nightvale sustained critical injuries. Multiple puncture wounds through both shoulders. Severe blood loss. Stabilized following extraction."

Seraphine turned immediately.

"Show me."

The projection shifted into combat reconstruction. The terrain appeared fractured, jagged, and unstable. Gamma Squad moved through defensive retreat, their formation strained under pressure.

Then—

The strike.

A serpentine appendage shot forward with violent speed.

Fanged tips pierced through Castiel's shoulders.

His body lifted from the ground.

The projection froze.

The chamber fell silent.

Seraphine stepped closer, her gaze narrowing slightly.

"Run it again."

The playback resumed in slow motion.

Castiel struggled.

Blood spread across the terrain.

The appendage tightened.

The projection froze again.

Seraphine's voice remained calm.

"Extraction."

The projection shifted.

Lucian rushed forward.

June grabbed hold.

Mira cleared space.

The appendage severed.

The projection shifted again.

David Wyn stepped forward.

Holding the line.

Seraphine watched carefully this time.

His stance.

His timing.

His positioning.

Then she shifted her attention back to Castiel's medical data.

"Recovery."

"Ninety-two percent probability. Full recovery expected within several weeks."

Seraphine nodded faintly.

"Send for Seren."

"Yes, my Lady."

The attendant withdrew.

The chamber returned to silence.

Seraphine remained still, studying the medical projection.

The injuries were severe.

Too severe.

If extraction had taken longer—

She stopped the thought.

The doors opened again.

Seren Nightvale entered quickly, her posture composed but her expression tense.

"You sent for me."

"Castiel."

Seren stepped forward immediately.

"How bad?"

Seraphine activated the medical display.

Seren studied the injuries carefully.

Her expression tightened.

"Through both shoulders…"

She exhaled slowly.

"He was seconds from dying."

Seraphine nodded.

"Yes."

Seren remained silent, studying the data.

"He shouldn't have been in that situation."

"No."

Seren folded her arms slightly.

"Recovery timeline?"

"Several weeks."

Seren nodded slowly.

"Good."

But her concern remained visible.

Seraphine studied her.

"You're concerned."

Seren answered quietly.

"He's family."

Seraphine nodded.

"He is more than that."

Seren looked up.

Seraphine's voice remained calm.

"Castiel is important to this family."

Seren understood.

"Yes."

Seren looked back at the projection.

"He was yelling."

Seraphine tilted her head slightly.

"You listened."

Seren nodded.

"He didn't want to leave them."

Seraphine nodded faintly.

"That is consistent with him."

Seren exhaled quietly.

"He thought they were going to die."

Seraphine remained silent.

Seren continued quietly.

"He cares about them."

Seraphine nodded.

"Yes."

Seren's gaze shifted.

David Wyn.

"The anomaly."

Seraphine nodded.

"Yes."

Seren studied him.

"He protected Castiel."

"Yes."

Seren folded her arms.

"Castiel trusts him."

Seraphine nodded faintly.

"That concerns me."

Seren looked toward her.

"He saved his life."

Seraphine nodded.

"Yes."

Seren spoke quietly.

"That changes things."

Seraphine nodded.

"Yes."

Silence settled between them.

Seren looked back at the projection.

"I've seen him fight."

Seraphine waited.

"He stays calm. He adapts quickly. He doesn't hesitate."

Seraphine nodded faintly.

"The anomaly."

Seren nodded.

"Yes."

The chamber fell quiet.

Seren stepped back.

"I'll continue monitoring both of them."

Seraphine nodded.

"Do so."

Seren turned and exited.

The chamber returned to silence.

Seraphine turned back toward the city below.

Castiel had survived.

That mattered.

David Wyn had intervened.

That mattered as well.

Lady Seraphine Nightvale remained still in the shadows.

Watching.

Because the Nightvale family—

Was now paying close attention.
