Chapter 37 - The Cost of Staying

The light in front of them remained steady, but the space around it began to change in a way none of them expected. At first, it was subtle. The ground beneath their feet felt slightly unstable, and the glow in the sky shifted faster than before. Zoe was the first to notice that something was wrong. She checked her device again, even though it had been unreliable here, and this time the readings spiked suddenly. The energy around them was increasing, not just near Elisa's presence, but everywhere. It was as if the entire place had become aware of them.

Jenny stepped back slightly, her eyes still fixed on the glowing figure. She could feel it too now. The connection that had felt calm moments ago was starting to strain, like it was being pulled apart. Elisa's form flickered more rapidly, losing its stability. Jenny tried to reach out again, but this time the light reacted differently, pulling away instead of responding. A quiet tension spread through the group as they realized that staying here was affecting something they did not yet understand.

Zoe quickly explained what she was seeing. This place was not meant to hold them for long. Their presence was disturbing the balance, and the longer they stayed, the more unstable everything would become. Louis added that the energy surrounding Elisa might be connected to the same system, which meant they could accidentally make things worse for her. Kevin understood the risk immediately. If they pushed too far without understanding the rules of this world, they could lose her completely instead of saving her.

Stebin clenched his fists, clearly frustrated by the idea of leaving. He argued that they had finally found her and could not just walk away now. Jake stepped in calmly, reminding him that rushing without control had already cost them once before. This was not about giving up, but about finding the right way to bring her back. Jenny stayed quiet during the exchange, her mind focused on the presence in front of her. She did not want to leave, but she could see the truth in what the others were saying.

After a moment, she made the decision. They would not abandon Elisa, but they would not risk losing her either. They needed to understand this place before they could save her. Jenny took one last look at the glowing figure, her voice soft but certain as she promised they would return. The light flickered gently, almost like it understood. As the energy around them continued to rise, the team began to step back, knowing that this was only the beginning. Whatever this world was, it had its own rules, and if they wanted to bring Elisa back, they would have to learn them.
